India hoping well here 110/1. England have wasted all three reviews.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,269 ✭✭✭Gillespy

Hartley having a nightmare debut. Nearly half the runs came from him. Ahmed expensive at end as well. No where near enough runs for that. That’s what forced Stokes to burn through the reviews, desperate to make something happen.

Jaiswal will have to start again in the morning, a hundred is there easy for him if he does. Really eye catching fearless innings.

Looks like as I predicted the English bowling selection has backfired....

Better off selecting quality quicks over average spinners... 23 overs and only 1 wicket taken.

Debutant Hartley in particular being made to look ordinary...

Hartley was thrown to the lions. Very inexperienced even by first class standards and asked to open the bowling on debut against great players of spin. And Stokes was in a difficult position then to either take him off and destroy his confidence or keep him on and let Jaiswel destroy his confidence. As bad as it was for him, it isn't terminal I think. He bowled alright to the right handers.

On selection, it's a few years on but Anderson was great last time in India. Long spells going for nothing and taking a few wickets. Last year in Pakistan too. On the evidence of today they've no one to dry up an end.

Very true… once again the leadership, captaincy and management need to be criticised too …a roll of the dice type decision…. Backfired…. A real black mark for Stokes, indeed Pope too whom I’m seeing is vice captain now.

Loads of criticism of west indies, and no credit given when they recovered to 266/8. Loads of handy players. But T20 cricket and England stealing players are a problem for the test team. Hope Jofra Archer is always injured, mercenary

Root with a wicket in a good first over, should have had two but Foakes drops an absolute dolly. An absolute gimmie, hardly had to move his hands or arms but he shells it…. Those sorts of moments can be costly.

Hartley continues to bowl quite waywardly, and innocuously.

Stokes costs his side a wicket as he can’t pick out a very arial ball in the Hyderabad murky sky, he had ages to find it and it was close to hitting him ! All happening.

Jack leach is harmless, can't bat can't field, can barely bowl. Hartley got a wicket, Gill out. Got stuck and took 66 balls over 23. India 159/3

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,829 ✭✭✭Mysterypunter

West indies up to 296/8. Cameron Green who never dropped a catch, dropped another catch. Usual rubbish talk from Australian commentators

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,829 ✭✭✭Mysterypunter

West indies 311 all out Sinclair got 50 in his first test innings. Batted 108 overs.

Australia 24/4, 3 wickets for Kemar Roach.

  • Registered Users Posts: 716 ✭✭✭Debub

Joe Root looks a better bowler than the 2 regular spinners

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,466 ✭✭✭MFPM

Australia have made a bit of a recovery thanks to Carey's knock, from 64/5, now 179/7 but still 133 behind. Smith's opening career not going to plan though only a few innings so far.

England have taken a few wickets but now 75 behind, could India get 150 lead?

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,672 ✭✭✭Trampas

Duckett thinking England still in good position

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,829 ✭✭✭Mysterypunter

Australia declared on 289/9. Good fightback. Both teams have been 5 down for just over 50, and totaled 600 between them. West indies with a slight lead of 35, 9 wickets remaining. Interesting test

England are fučked. Only bad weather can save this lot from defeat and aside from a few clouds forecasted today, day 3… the rest of the test will be dry and sunny according to the latest forecast…

a first innings total sub 330 really just opened the door for India…and 246 is just a lousy score, rubbish. Jadeja and Patel are well set… the motivation initially will be to guide Jadeja to his century and with 3 wickets in hand, the likelihood is a 200 plus first innings lead for India which is you’d have to bet, game over for the English…

Shockingly bad captaincy from Stokes once again by picking only one seamer, especially with such an inexperienced spin attack and your only experienced spinner, Leach, carrying an injury…. There is absolutely rolling the dice and then what Stokes and co did. Absolute headless captaincy. Stokes needs to stop this emotive bravado in terms of captaincy and selection and play the percentages… you heard the saying, common sense not being that common… Ben needs to stop proving it. Joe Root, his best batsman being called on to bowl 24 overs… hmmmm

  • Registered Users Posts: 25,410 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

First over, Wood bowling…. No close catchers…. No slips, just a gully. Everyone spread out.

commentators bemused…. “ he must be planning trying to get them out with the short ball, trying to get them caught in the deep ! “

first over, 2 yorkers and everything else full or length from Wood…. Real head scratching stuff…

Root doesn’t even have a short leg or silly point zzzzzzz

Decent fight back by England. 36 behind with 6 wickets in hand. They'd need a lead of 200 to make it interesting but India should still win.

Stokes gone. Pope still there on 67.

  • Registered Users Posts: 716 ✭✭✭Debub

    Well crafted century by Pope

Seen the best and the worst of Pope in this game. This is why they stick with him, no matter how often he has stinkers like the first innings. Feast or famine with him.

The English middle order just didn't show up when they were needed....

    Root... 2

    Bairstow... 10

    Stokes... 6

All 3 failing will probably cost England the test barring a miracle...

England have nobody after Rehan Ahmed who can bat., Hartley has only two fifties in his first class career... so putting on another hundred runs between Wood, Leach and Hartley is unlikely and they'll need them,..

Leach might not even take the field again his knee injury is rated as ' serious ' according to the English spin coach Jeetan Patel... so down a few runs and a bowler... I'd say England need a miracle...

Bumrah deserves a lot of praise for that. Unbelievable spell. Different game without it.

England will still probably lose this but important day for the competitiveness of the rest of the series. They bowled a lot better this morning taking 3 for nothing. Made 300 with no significant contributions from their main batsmen. First team to make 300 in the second innings in India since 2012 apparently. Jadeja has taken wickets but gone for nearly 200 runs. All the spinners were uncharacteristically expensive.

  • Registered Users Posts: 25,410 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

The tactic from the Indians seems to be to offer the English batsmen no width whatsoever. I noticed that most of the deliveries are at the stumps…. Of the six wickets England have lost, five have seen the batsmen bowled or lbw…also India they have a sort of backward short fine leg type fielder to negate any easy runs coming from a delivery that’s too straight or drifting too much down leg…. They don’t mind being driven, as that brings more of a chance of a wicket but not giving easy runs.

  • Registered Users Posts: 25,410 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Bumrah intentionally tries to block Pope running a single, deliberately at the last second looks at him steps backwards about 3 feet from where he was into his path glancing him with his shoulder 🤌🏻…. umpires… do nothing but look on… 1000% deliberate he’s looking at him.

Jadeja subsequently comes over in fairness and sincerely apologises to Pope who is less than impressed. Following that he speaks with Bumrah…. Umpires need to be on top of that carry on. More sloppy rubbish fûckwit lazy umpiring…it’s beyond embarrassing.

Rehan gone, loose shot straight from the tail ender sloppy handbook. He really needed to stick around for another 30 minutes…. Either could have left it or cut it, he prods it aerially and carelessly to a fielder.

India need 231, luckily for them leach is fit to bowl

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,829 ✭✭✭Mysterypunter

This is some finish, Australia 187/8 chasing 216. Smith 76* and Shamar Joseph has 6/60

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,466 ✭✭✭MFPM

Australia need 29 with 2 wickets in to win at tea. Smith 76 no, Shaman Joseph has taken 6 wickets.

England have done really well here primarily down to Pope - most pundits expected this match to be done in 3-3.5 days, it may even go to day 5. India should win with their line up against that England attack particularly given that England have just hit over 400 in their second innings.
