I think efficiency means cheap! Does to me anyway. Just an observation, initially I didnt think of the environment either, not really when buying the car either, my primary concern was the BIK benefits to be honest.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,298 ✭✭✭MightyMunster

Efficiency also means more range on longer trips, less charging stops, or shorter charging stops.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,048 ✭✭✭✭the_amazing_raisin

I assumed it was implied! 😉

I actually bought the Leaf to be environmentally friendly. The Toyota was getting progressively more rattly so I needed a new car anyway and decided to take the plunge on an EV to save on the CO2 emissions

    Haven't looked back since 😁

Arguably the environment may have been better by keep my wife's Citroen going instead of us trading it for a big heavy ID.4, but again it was at the end of its lifetime and needed replacing

Been charging the cars off solar as much as possible so I'm happy my cars are having as little environmental impact as possible

Charging pad charging speeds vary, but no charging pad on any car, comes remotely close to the much higher speed of cable charging, with a good quality charging lead, like Anker.

Electric - quiet, automatic, great take off from lights even for a cheap EV

Heat Pump & Matrix LED Headlights

Hatchback - still tiny boot but with back seats down and front seat down I could fit 3 x 2.4 meter wardrobe doors inside....just!!

Heated Seats and Steering Wheel - my first time with this, my mum loves it when I give her a lift!!

Physical Buttons for everything - old school, no haptic in sight!!

    Dislikes:

Range on long journeys - trade off with the great price I got in 2020 just prior to second lockdown, top trim at bottom trim price, was a demo model for a few months

Lots of recalls, latest is an ECU vs Heat Pump recall, all fixed for free as within 3 year warranty still

No Spare tyre- got flat, tried repair with can of gunk failed, Aviva gave me and car lift from Newbridge to Dublin, recovery guy said they are best regarding no quibble, others only bring you to nearest garage. I ended up buying a half spare type and keep that in the tiny boot now as insurance.

SatNav, Android Auto, Entertainment Console - very typical of legacy automaker, I use a USB for music, gave up on android auto, use google etc for SatNav with phone holder. Bypass it for 90% of things except radio!

Future of Stellantis if I keep it

The lack of a spare tyre in modern cars baffles me. Like what's the point? If you get a flat tyre you're essentially f****d.

Price. Paid 33,000 for it in Jan 2022. 46,000k later and no issues. ...That's nearly half what is now being said to be the average EV price being paid! (and I test-drove all the ones that were 10-grand more, but prefer this one either way)

It blends in. OK, I got a red one, but it looks like a "normal car", not a car trying to stand out like a space-ship.

Quite roomy for an EV. Boot is "big enough" and sitting in the back, the only giveaway you are in an EV is the lack of bump down the middle.

Android Auto/ Apple Carplay. I use AA and added a wireless adaptor to not have to plug it in. I like the options this gives, not being tied to manufacturer firmware updates.

Suspension. Built for the Chinese market, so it's done differently - small wheels and big suspension. I believe the newer model is being rebuilt to a European-spec, but I like the bounce in mine.

    Dislikes

Small wheels. See above. It's not a problem for me, but a friend says he'd never get one because the wheels are too small (17" I think?). I don't understand that myself, but hey, others do I guess.

No single-pedal driving. At KERS level 3, taking your foot off the accelerator does not bring the car to a stop in most cases. You still need to use the brake, if you were going fast.

Drive mode not remembered. It always starts in KERS 2/ Normal. This means, the brake regen is medium level and drive mode is not Eco or Super by default - I'd prefer if it stuck to whatever was last selected, but it's no biggie.

(I'm struggling already here...) Fiddly infotainment system. It's not a problem if I stick to Android Auto, as I normally do, but if I want to listen to FM radio, I have to make around 3 touchscreen selections. Post 2022 infotainment has been revamped, I believe.

"Boring". ...I mean, if you want razzmatazz in your vehicle (at this price-level), check out the MG 4 or the other one, but I prefer the estate-look of the MG5.

Service price! ...Not exactly a fault with the car, but my 1-year service cost €170 from the dealer. For what!?? It's a scam, but if I'm to keep the 7 year warranty, I believe I'm stuck with it! (?)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,048 ✭✭✭✭the_amazing_raisin

Think this was covered in another thread but it's basically cost savings. It's cheaper to subcontract a recovery service and supply a repair kit or install puncture proof tyres

Besides, with the beast tyres on the likes of an ID.4, where would you keep a spare? Even a space saver would use up a massive chunk of boot space

I'll be investing in one of those tyre plug kits, the general consensus is they seem to be more reliable than the gunk spray and the tyre can generally be repaired properly afterwards

    MG5 LR (taxi)

    Likes:

    - Front seat like an armchair. "Weight" of steering wheel just right. Very comfortable driving.

    - 16" wheels so not super expensive to replace

    - Screen embedded in dash so can't be ripped out by taxi passengers.

    - I still randomly accelerate hard just for the fun of it

    - Charging port is hidden behind MG badge at front of car. Nice & tidy.

    Dislikes:

Like a lot of EV's, the software needs work.

     - Android Auto is the work of the devil (yes, I have a good cable)

     - Software is generally slow

     - Built-in sat-nav is pointless

Car won't remember a lot of my perferences so each car start is like starting an airplane. Eco mode ON, check. KERS 3 ON, check. Speed limit sign detector OFF, check. Disable Android Auto, check. Tune into radio screen, check.

IMHO car has design flaw in that rain water seems to be channeled into open window, even after rain stops. I'm not explaining it very well but I've never experienced anything like it in any other car.

My MG5 is a working vehicle and I worry about how much, if any, stock the official garages keep in stock. And the MG5 is not old enough so that there are spare parts available in breakers yards etc.

    1. Acceleration. Insanely quick. Overtaking almost anything, anywhere at any time is a doddle. The look on first time passengers when you give it the beans 😂.

    2. SuC network. Just works brilliantly.

    3. Infotainment system. Netflix, Spotify, YouTube on a crystal clear screen.

    4. So easy to drive (but I'll also say that all electric vehicles are the same). One pedal driving is effortless.

    5. Surprisingly roomy. Swallows suitcases, bags etc for holidays.

    Dislikes

    1. Spotify messes around on occasions. Think it's because I'm linked with my phone account and that is an issue.

    2. Ride can be a bit harsh but again on low profile 20 inch tyres that can be expected.

    3. No option to turn off autowipers on autopilot.

    4. As above....wipers aren't great full stop.

    5. If you put on the windscreen washers with the window down it comes inside the car.

It's our first electric car and I love it. Finding my wife driving it more and more than her own car (840d BMW). Also love the preheat/precool function from the app. Never had range anxiety once and I've driven it everywhere from the Dingle peninsula to the north coast of Antrim and everywhere in between.

They could fit a tyre that expands in diameter when inflated. I had one in a Mercedes. So the space needed might not be huge.

But like you said the reason is cost saving, no matter what reason they try to use.

Just put 20000km since mid January on a Kona EV. Mostly motorway miles.

    Pros

Silly power and torque if you can stop the tyres from spinning. Interestingly, new Kona EV will have only half the torque.

Great real world range and outstanding efficiency. I only charge at night at home. Never needed to use the charging network. Wouldn't have the patience for that.

Good range at motorway speeds. I usually roll at 120kph on the GPS and can get from Clonmel to Dublin and back no hassle without charging en route.

Cheap to run if on a good night rate.

    Proven tech.

    Compact size.

Excellent HVAC efficiency if left in auto.

Comfortable driving position and ergonomic controls with knobs instead of screen based nonsense.

    Cons

    Bit small.

    Bit pricey.

Not sexy at all and soon replaced.

    Hard on tyres.

    Tesla M3 price drop.

Mean standard equipment compared to other countries.

Nissan's lying claim that is does up to 270 km on one charge; not true.

Range is much lower than above figure. Not recommended to charge to 100% regularly. Only up to 80% - further reducing the sh*te range.

Range drops sharply in cold weather.

Range is sh*te if you use the heating.

    High price.

    LIKE

    1. Handling and power due to sports car profile and tyres. Like a BMW/Audi only with indicators.
    2. Charging speeds and Tesla chargers.
    3. Electric seat adjustment and comfort.
    4. Software is pretty amazing, best in class.
    5. Storage is very good for its size when including rear well and frunk.

    DISLIKE

    1. Too delicate in finishings. Attracts scratches like crazy from other clumsy drivers and interior prone to damage.
    2. Collision detection system over sensitive. Constantly finding things after the driver has spotted them and then freaking out. This is when driving 5-10k under limit, leaving gaps, anticipating pedestrians.
    3. Autowipers love the sun.
    4. Water comes in from front screen wash.

    ID 4 GTX

    5 dislikes:

    1) The ID4 temp controls are not backlit or physical buttons.. just give me the old dials from my Tiguan/Octavia.. no need to be over complicating things

    2) The 299 bhp drops to 200 bhp once battery drops below 80% which doesn't take long and they recommend you only charge to 80 anyway so annoying!

    3) The front seems to get coated in flies when driving like no other car ive had before? Seems to be a summer issue

    4) My wheels are a little big at 21" - they look good and id no choice as was a pre order car but id probably have gone for 19s for comfort - plus they will be expensive to replace.. ive two in the service pack so at least that cushions the blow a bit

    5) VW drive in the center of lane warning and sometimes over aggressive emergency breaking when parking etc.. this has happened 2 or 3 times on me

    5 likes:

    1) Free driving fuel from Solar and work EV chargers.

    2) Power - acceleration is hard to beat

    3) Just over all EV driving - regen breaking, lazy lazy lazy

    4) remote temp pre heat or cooling - this is awesome to be able to cool the car for 15/20 minutes on a hot summer day - again probably not an EV only thing

    5) the id4 is a roomy car.. lot more boot space and interior space than our tiguan..

That HP drop is shocking. Would you buy something different again given the chance?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 930 ✭✭✭n.d.os

That comment about the HP dropping. That's ridiculous. The GTX looks great but why bother if they are going to do that to customers? Essentially you are paying for the trim at that rate. There's 200hp in my ID4 Business and 230hp in my 52k bog standard Polestar.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,840 ✭✭✭micks_address

no i dont think i would to be honest.. i really love the all wheel drive. i get they want to limit the hp as it probably has a big impact on battery but id have thought something like 50/60% be more than enough to start limiting it at.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,840 ✭✭✭micks_address

the price now is hard to swallow - about 68k - i got mine for about 54 before the price increase and the grant was applicable last year.. to be honest a lot has to do with pcp im on.. my payments are only about 450 a month and have been around that on my last 3 cars.. so if i can keep them around there id be happy out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 930 ✭✭✭n.d.os

Is it a Business GTX or a GTX Max? That's a great PCP you are on. I expect the car you traded in was worth quite a bit or you topped up your deposit? I'm on 520 a month. I traded in a 2-year-old Tiguan with a year left on the PCP. Hard to swallow at the time but its nothing compared to what I'm paying on the Polestar after trading in my previous car after 2 months.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,840 ✭✭✭micks_address

Gtx business.. I traded in a Tiguan as well. 2.5 years old auto petrol, highline with tech pack and grey leather was lovely car.. really didn't think I'd get away without putting 7 or 8k into the deal but didn't have contribute anything.

    Tesla Model Y RWD

Likes (have only had it since May 1st):

    1. The drive is pleasingly smooth and sturdy - not as fast as the i3 I had before, but much more solid on the road
    2. The whole keyless/cardless entry and starting/stopping is great
    3. The car's size, both the interior and the boot, is great, really good for three growing kids
    4. I love all the things that would be extras on other cars - the 5 heated seats and steering wheel, the glorious glass roof, vegan leather, etc
    5. I also really like the steering wheel, the shape, size and feel are all very pleasing

    Dislikes:

    1. The lack of USS/the presence of Tesla Vision is pretty poor
    2. I really miss CarPlay - the implementation of the Apple Music app on Tesla's OS is not good
    3. The whole keyless/cardless entry has led to me leaving my phone in the (unlocked) car more than once
    4. Too many controls are on the screen, as opposed to physical buttons (the glovebox, ffs)
    5. Visibility through the rear window is awful
    6. The turning circle is not great
    7. It contributes to E*** M***'s bottom line 😭

Do people actually use a glove box? For what ? You have two massive cubbies right beside you, what do you need to keep in glovebox miles away from you 😁

Have opened mine twice in 4 years I'd say

You did very well. I traded in a petrol Rline. 2 years old but the PCP wasn't finished so I expect that's where I lost out. That said, the ID4 was a lot more expensive so I expected the monthlies to go up. Somewhere along in your PCP you must have put in more money than me, maybe on a previous car. 450 is very low for an ID4 on a PCP.

    Honda e (2022)

    Likes:

    1. The exterior and interior design - I still think it looks great on the outside, and on the inside I love the design and (most of) the materials used, very comfy seats, has screens everywhere but real climate controls. It's an interesting car with personality, I've long since lost count of the number of people who have approached me to talk about it.
    2. The running costs - peanuts, did around 10k kms for the first 200 quid government electricity credit. Servicing, tax, insurance also very cheap.
    3. The equipment - it's extremely well equipped for a small car; 360 cameras, heated everything, loads of safety tech, drives itself on motorways, etc. Camera side mirrors are brilliant.
    4. The size - other car is a Volvo SUV so I wanted something small and nimble. Thought about something like a Fiesta ST in the past but couldn't get past the cheapo interiors most small cars have.
    5. The drive - it has just over 150 horses but 315 Nm so it shifts quite nicely, rear wheel drive, has all round indy suspension and is generally just smooth, nippy and very comfortable. It's great around town but also on motorways.

    Dislikes:

    1. The range - this wasn't an important factor for me when I bought it but it is undeniably fairly low. It will do 200+ kms no problem in the summer but rainy motorway in the winter with heating on and 150 would be a struggle. It's a pity because it's very relaxing to drive on longer trips.
    2. Some tech moans - The auto wipers even on the most sensitive setting are not sensitive enough, my Volvo is much much better. Similarly Volvo's active cruise is a bit better. And the Honda app is not available in Ireland which is annoying. The three settings for the heated seats seem to go from warm to volcano to surface of the sun.
    3. Charging speed - it's not something I ever do but it will only DC charge at something like 50 kW max, so in reality 30-40.
    4. The price - again, not something that bothered me personally, but it's fairly expensive now when compared to other new EVs. I'll pay a premium for design etc, but most won't.
    5. No idea what to replace it with - I love it and will keep it for another year at least but have no idea where to go next. Was hoping Honda would make the Sports EV concept that they showed with the Urban EV concept (that turned into the e) but that's not happening.

Sorry to go off, but are notifications on boards broken? They seem to be for some time. I keep getting emails for every comment-update even if I don't click the link ...I mean, I wouldn't mind ONE until I click it, then one more until I click again - but to get an email for EVERY SINGLE comment is ridiculous. It never used to be like that.

Also, is it even POSSIBLE to unsubscribe from a discussion any longer? I unticked the "bookmark this discussion" at the bottom. I unticked the bookmark symbol at the top. Neither worked. ...This is not the first thread I've had this problem with and is likely the reason I stopped using boards for many months. Boards is a great resource (I don't want to start a flame-war), but it wasn't broke until they "fixed" it.

(I only respond to this in this thread because I keep getting emails for this conversation. I have trawled through the notification options and don't see any that would help. I don't wish to hijack the thread. Sorry.)

I use the glovebox for stuff that lives in the car - wipes, eCars card, duster, etc. The cubbies are more for transitory stuff like water, keys, etc.

Regardless, the fact that the glovebox is opened from the screen is still a bad design choice, imo, even if you never used it.

Using the voice command might be handier, just one press of scroll wheel required. I opened ours last time when I swapped the USB stick with a USB HDD back in the winter.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 604 ✭✭✭iniall

I’ve yet to try voice commands but I have mapped the glovebox open command to a long press on the left steering wheel button, which is easier and faster than using the screen.

    Tesla Model 3 RWD 2022

in order of importance with the most important in both categories first

    Likes:

    1. The reduction in running cost -- 400+ Kms for somewhere between €5 and €6 worth of electricity. That is less than the cost of a gallon of diesel!!
    2. The tech -- the technology is excellent, from the cameras to the energy usage information and the navigation system (that said, I was coming from an 11 year old Merc).
    3. The smug feeling that I'm doing my bit in reducing greenhouse gases
    4. It's great to drive -- great handling, single pedal driving, acceleration, visibility, etc.
    5. The lack of any servicing requirements. Other EV manufacturers insist on 'servicing' to maintain the warranty

    Dislikes:

    1. I bought the car before the current price reductions. I feared that the €5,000 EV grant would go at the end of 2022 (and, of course, I didn't know that Tesla would reduce the prices).
    2. It doesn't feel as solid as my previous car (the 11 year old Merc). I suspect that is to do with the frameless doors on the Tesla which don't have the same solid clunk when they close.
    3. The lack of a hatchback -- Of course I knew about that when I bought it and the boot is very big with the rear seats folded so it isn't an issue really.
    4. The turning circle isn't great.
    5. I'm struggling here as I really like the car and its been faultless in the 8 months and 8,000+ kms.

    2. handling: people say you can’t have fun in an ev, as it’s awd it’s a great drive and doesn’t put a foot wrong even when pushed. Turning off ES makes it even more interesting
    3. one pedal drive, excellent once ur used to it
    4. tech, all just works well, predicts good charging stops on longer journeys with accurate info such as when last used and available or not. Preheats work well when charging destination selected

    dislikes:

    1. depreciation. I went on a pcp deal for the first time due to anticipating this but even with 3.9 per cent apr it’s a very bad deal financially unless something drastic happens over the next 2 years, 3 euro a litre or something

    3. the weird opinions people have formed of EVs and their owners over the past 6 to 12 months. Constantly correcting people on factually incorrect things is getting a bit boring. That’s a prob with all EVs to be fair
    4. drive train through the centre of the car, lazy design but yes we know they were hedging their bets on the template at the time
    5. exterior design is nice but it doesn’t wow me. I like to look back at my car and be yes that is a really nice car. Feel it would be gorgeous if it was a couple of inches longer, but isn’t that the same with everything. Polestar 4 is that from the pics I’ve seen but look this is a first world problem complaint

V2G won’t work anyway without specific charging infrastructure and safe guards in place.

V2L would be handy for a few like Hyundai, BYD etc

    2022 Leaf 40kw

    Likes,

    1. It's just a car, it's not mad looking, it has lots of buttons that work and a small touchscreen that works. No software issues.

    2. 84k km covered since Jan 2022, still original tyres and second set of wipers. Super low maintenance.

    3. Approx 5,900 litres of diesel saved.

    4. No noticeable battery degradation since new.

    5. For now anyway, any charge point with a chademo is likey avaliable. I'd imagine its gonna be a short lived perk.

    Dislikes.

    1. Range, good for 200km any time of year. 62kw would be better but not worth the expense, an even better ev would be in a similar price bracket.

    2. Not able to set charge timer from the app, can only be done in car.

    3. Not the comfiest on long trips.

    4. More than 1/2 fast charges in a day and charging speeds reduce.

    5. The inevitable phasing out of chademo.

A good redisign with a more modern battery and ccs charging, keep as a hatchback and not some stupid crossover would probably see the leaf back as a top seller. Probably not to be though.

    Nissan Leaf SVE 2014

Seems as nobody has listed one of these yet, I will skip the Model 3 and go straight to the car that started it all for many of us.

    1. Price. It was cheap to buy back in 2017 from the UK at £11,000 when the exchange rate was good.
    2. Running Cost. Very cheap to run. Costs a couple of euro to fill up on cheap night rate electricity.
    3. Tech & Spec. It has great tech/extras for a 10 year old car. Leather heated seats. Heated steering wheel. 360 reverse camera. LED lights. Folding mirrors. BOSE sound system etc etc.
    4. Driving. It is so much fun to drive. The instant high torque and go-kart feel of the car is just a genuinely fun experience.
    5. Reliability. The reliability of this car at circa 100k klms is great. Aside from needing shims after 1st NCT (common issue), the car has been no trouble. It's still on original pads!!!

    Dislikes

    1. Appearance. It's an ugly yoke and I have one of the nicer colours (Gun Metal Grey) and the higher spec with the extra chrome kit (mirrors and fogs) as well as the much nicer 17" rims. The funky headlights just make it look like an alien frog and it takes a while to grow on you.
    2. Range. It's at about 75% of original battery capacity, so a range of 80-100km on average if you stay off the motorway. This is a limiting factor if you ever need to go outside the range of the car.
    3. CHAdeMO. This is a dying standard and when most sites only have a single CHAdeMO connector (if any), the risk of it being broken is a further limiting factor on this car.
    4. The APP. I haven't used it for years, because it just doesn't register anymore. I used to use it to pre-heat the car, or check the state of charge, but it doesn't work anymore.
    5. Navigation. This is more of a general Nissan thing, but if using the Sat Nav in the car, from new, the maps are already 3 years out of date and the cost to update is madness. I think they stopped making the updates available 6 or 7 years ago anyway. I think there are hacks to get apple or android auto onto the car screen.

    2017 Leaf 24kw

    SVE

    Love the:

    Sound system

    Heated seats and steering wheel

    Nippy around town

    Very cheap to run

Preheating the car in the morning

    Don't like:

Range, guesometer says 140km when full but never get that range really,

Begs to be charged on a round trip between Ennis and Limerick which is only about 80km and when battery is under 20% it starts to get very coy about how far it can go

Got the car only for school runs and using around town, excellent car for this purpose

My dislike of over aggressive emergency breaking was fixed with a software update

Dislikes (not many as I think it's a great car)

    1. Range is a bit low but suits our needs for 2nd car run about.

    2. CHAdeMO charger (very rarely needed).

    3. Type 1 slow charger.
