Massive young man. Skills aren't essential at that size! Hitting rucks and mauls!

I think there's a French former u20 playing at Bordeaux, who could be capped for France soon. Smashing player! Can't remember his name but he played u20's last year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,224 ✭✭✭Lost Ormond

Skills aren't essential. Nonsense. Even at that size.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,352 ✭✭✭theVersatile

That would be Marko Gazzotti I believe. Dude is an athletic freak.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,351 ✭✭✭Locke_Lamora

Think he was only 18 in that final, so could play again this year.

Depoortere? He has become a critical player for Bordeaux this season in the centre at 20 and looks every bit as comfortable as Moefana, Penaud or Jalibert.

He has been named in their senior squad for the 6N. Turned 21 last week. He's the second coming of Jauzion.

French tend to leave the players involved in Top14 with their clubs for 6 nations window but release them for the World Cup. They were a different animal in that. Beat nearly everyone by 40 points!

I’d be kind of worried about that front row in terms of the scrum. The only knock i’ve heard on sparrow is scrummaging and Usanov is a pretty recent position change. There prob isn’t an alternative to Sparrow unless they really like Bell, but i’d expect Boyd to start at loosehead.

If Usanov is better than Boyd as an u19, other provinces need to get on the phone. With McCarthy and Boyle there, there prob has never been a better time to persuade a LHP to leave.

  • Registered Users Posts: 371 ✭✭Leinster5

I would agree. Usanov has struggled at AIL level at scrum & Howard is far off the required level of scrummaging. Sparrow is by far the best of the lot in my view. I'd imagine there will be many changes post-6 Nations and would expect the likes of Deay & perhaps O'Reilly at Prop & 2nd row to feature.

quite a few forwards playing AIL yesterday, not many backs:

    • Andrew Sparrow - started for UCD
    • Jacob Boyd - bench for Queens
    • Henry Walker - started for Queens
    • Stephen Smyth - started for Old Wesley
    • Alan Spicer - started for UCD
    • Billy Corrigan - stared for Old Wesley
    • Bryn Ward - bench for ballynahinch
    • Sean Edogbo - started at 6 for UCC
    • Luke Murphy - started at 7 for Shannon
    • Jake O'Riordan - started at 9 for UL Bohs
    • Rory Ellerby - started at 12 for Queens
    • Stephen Kiely - started at 15 for Shannon

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 781 ✭✭✭Hey_Ho_Lets_Go_3

Notable under-20s who arent in squad but also played:

    • Emmet Calvey - bench for Shannon
    • Adam Wrona - bench for UCC
    • Kamil Novak - bench for Cork Con
    • Jacob Sheahan - started at 7 for UCC
    • Michael Colreavy - started at 7 for UCD
    • Eanna McCarthy - started at 8 for UCC
    • Dylan Hicks - bench for Garryowen
    • Ben McFarlane - started at 11 for Queens
    • Luke Kritzinger - started at 13 for UCD
    • Davy Colbert - started at 14 for Trinity, scored two tries.
    • Sean Condon - started at 14 for UCC
    • Ben Gibson - started at 15 for Queens
    • Tom Larke - started at 15 for Old Wesley

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,703 ✭✭✭Dubinusa

Watched the Cork Con. V UCD match. Con, were full value for the win. Tim cookery playing at UCD. He's a good player, I was surprised that nobody picked him up. As far as the 30's go, Sparrow struggled in my opinion and Spicer was mixed. He carries to upright and needs a lower base. They should work on explosiveness with him as I feel he gets by with his size. Some training with him will certainly get him on the right track.

20s trained with queens during the week. Wonder if theyve done or will do any more sessions with ail sides before 6 natio s

  • My predicted Irish U20s team, based on who did and didn't play AIL this past weekend (I'm assuming guys who started in AIL aren't going to play v France U20s next weekend).

    15-9,1-8:

Hugo McLaughlin, Ben O'Connor, Wilhelm de Klerk, Hugh Gavin, Ethan Graham, Jack Murphy, Oliver Coffey, Alex Usanov, Danny Sheahan, Andrew Sparrow, Evan O'Connell, Alan Spicer, Joe Hopes, Josh Stevens, Brian Gleeson.

Reps: Henry Walker, Ben Howard, Patreece Bell, Luke Murphy, Bryn Ward, Tadhg Brophy, Sean Naughton, Finn Treacy.

Some of the positional moves might be slightly different: Like O'Connor and McLaughlin might swap, and I'm not sure who is ahead at hooker - I gave the nod to Sheahan based on experience. I think having Hopes at blindside allows them to name two backrows on the bench.

Have no idea who's second choice at scrum half.

Guys like Sean Edogbo, Billy Corrigan, Rory Ellerby and Stephen Kiely all started in AIL last weekend, while Jacob Boyd and Stephen Smyth sat on the bench in AIL.

Other guys, who had been regular or recent AIL starters but look like likely starters for the Irish U20s like Andrew Sparrow, Alan Spicer, Josh Stevens, Bryn Ward, Luke Murphy, Oliver Coffey, Jack Murphy, Wilhelm de Klerk and Hugo McLaughlin all were absent from AIL this weekend, hence my prediction that they're in line to start v France.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,582 ✭✭✭ulsteru20s

I saw some of edogbo and smyth in ail this week (their teams played). I get the logic but ironically they both looked class. Its crazy edogbo wouldn’t make a 23. He is insanely powerful in the carry. Ditto for Smyth in terms of his size at hooker. Although they do seem to love Walker.

Edit: crazy as in the back row talent must be absolutely insane this year.

Post edited by Boards.ie: Mike on

  • Yeah, I would have always had both penciled in from a good bit out, but just made that pick above based on the fact that some guys who will definitely start were obviously pulled from AIL duty, so taking that readthrough across the whole squad, led me to conclude they're likelier to miss out.

From what I've heard - it looks likely that Joe Hopes will start at 6, and Edogbo doesn't really look like a 7. I've heard they're really high on Josh Stevens, who is supposed to be a good talent.

It could well be the case that Smyth, Boyd and Edogbo could feature this weekend, and it wouldn't wholly surprise me, but for now I think it'll be roughly the 23 I forecast.

Yea fair enough. There are four more games and a world cup as well so everyone will get a chance.

Given the perceved strenght of the pack they could well go 6-2 also feels like theyll be reticent to take off some of the backs

Adam Deay and Ruben Moloney back playing at the weekend for their clubs 20s sides after injury. Big talents.

Noticed Tom Brigg started for Queens too.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,582 ✭✭✭ulsteru20s

Is deay better than sparrow? I guess leinster would only take one?

    Ditto for mclaughlin and moloney.

I notice there's a couple of English lads amongst the team. Did we pilfer them from England?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,224 ✭✭✭Lost Ormond

No. We have an exiles programme and all came trhough that. Dont think any were in conversation for england at all

Bell and Wootton both played for England at u18 level.

O Connell's must be wrong? He is eligible for next year as well?

edit: i'm guessing they put spicer's on him as well. I doubt they are born on same day.

    Yeah thats wrong, fixed it.

I'm very interested in seeing both of the english IQ guys honestly. Bell beat out longstaff who is raw but is physically a bit of a monster. And Wooton is the 4th 9 which is interesting in itself. He's also u19.

  • Yeah, puzzled why they included 4 9's but only 3 second rows (4 including Hopes there).

Crazy to think guys as big as Alex Usanov and Alan Spicer are still only 18 years old as well.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,582 ✭✭✭ulsteru20s

two guys i'm also very interested in seeing. Spicer for obvious reasons.

Usanov because if he is good, do leinster take him or do other provinces make a play for him this year. There is no more loaded depth chart in rugby than loosehead at leinster. Unless they are moving mccarthy to thp which seems pretty risky.

Post edited by Boards.ie: Mike on

  • Usanov is absolutely enormous, and has a frame where he looks like he can easily add more bulk. He has been pretty dynamic when I've seen him and shows up around the field looking for carries frequently. It also speaks well that he's featured a few times this year for Clontarf in AIL, which is pretty special IMO for a 18-year old prop.

Agreed - while the initial gap after Porter is bare atm (evidenced by 35-year old Cian Healy still being the second best option), Leinster would have sky high hopes at LHP for both Jack Boyle and Paddy McCarthy.

Have heard McCarthy has been focused on adding some kgs over recent months (he played the first four games of the season for Leinster, then hasn't played at any level effectively until last weekend for Trinity in AIL). Porter still has an awful lot of rugby in him as well, so this does likely point to Michael Milne being out the door this summer or Ed Byrne or both.

EDIT: On Spicer - he's obviously an enormous unit, but I would say I haven't been overly impressed with him yet on the 9-10 times I've seen him. His conditioning to me still leaves a bit to be desired, and trying to get him into situations where he can use his size is requiring a bit of thought. Obviously he's incredibly young, and they're doing everything they can to bring him along, but I'm not holding out hope that he'll be an enormous difference maker this 6N (hope I'm wrong on that).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,224 ✭✭✭Lost Ormond

Doesnt mean we pilfered them from england though.

Agreed about Spicer. Have saw him a couple of times for UCD. He's young and hopefully will develop. I don't see any explosiveness or raw power from him yet. I have said before, if they can get him to Toners level....

The rumbles from the other provinces, i wonder if anyone can afford ed byrne or would want to pay for him. I really like milne although he is quite injury prone it seems.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,582 ✭✭✭ulsteru20s

Sounds like worse came to worse, you could move usanov to THP.

Post edited by Boards.ie: Mike on

  • Yeah - I did think that. He's a relatively recent convert to prop though altogether, so would be a longish road to make him switch but not impossible.

I'm equally not sold on Andrew Sparrow yet - he looks good but will need a big 6N I think to get an academy contract. It's a shame Adam Deay is injured at present as I think he would have been in contention for the 23 here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,703 ✭✭✭Dubinusa

It's strange that lads in other academies are not making it. Sanderson at Ulster, Donnelly at Munster. Hate to say it but, Loose heads seem to come out of Leinster. Look at Wycherly at Munster! He's urc level. Loughman is their best loosehead and he's Leinster developed. It's brilliant that there's so many coming through.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,582 ✭✭✭ulsteru20s

I hope Boyd can buck that trend but yea at the other three provinces all the interesting guys are at THP. I haven't seen much of Boal. Also, looks like EOS might be leaving this year. Our tighthead side is better especially at senior level. I still hope longstaff can make academy too. Wilson is the shining star there. He is dynamic, athletic and def big enough.

I agree with the recent mole cast on munster. They need to get more back rows to switch to front row. They have the athletes and they are all piling up in the back row. Their tighthead side is better. Jager looks better than i thought he would be. If salanoa can get healthy he could also be an excellent THP. McSweeney and Forde at least have the right size. Their loosehead side is so meh. Loughman has really exceeded what i thought he could be. Outside of that ... i guess hadden looks like he should be a really good scrummager. Its their biggest weakness imo alongside hooker.

I'm not going to criticize connacht for anything. They far exceed their resources.

Really love Aungier. His dominant carry stats really popped when i was looking through them yesterday. I also really liked Barrett in last year's u20s. Great size and very athletic, obviously still a work in progress. Illo too, i think will end up very solid. They also have a couple of props coming through next year i think.

  • Registered Users Posts: 250 ✭✭conquestscarer

I disagree on Sparrow. I think unless he gets completely destroyed at Scrumtime he will get an academy contract. Leinster passed on Foxe last year probably to pick up one of Sparrow or Deay, they can't have no tightheads in the academy, and I'm not sure one is coming next year unless Mullan starts getting games.

Both of those where u20 backups im not sure its a surprise theve not broken through so far anyway.

Wytcherlys just to small for international prop i think hes probably a bit small for a urc prop.

Its definetly odd thst youve seen less front rows in general out of the other 3 for tightheads in particular youd think agriculture would be a breeding ground

I reckon Munster have it it big with Hadden and Foxe! Great prospects, imo. I fully expect them both to very good pro's.

Does anyone know anything about Corrigan? Is he a good prospect?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,582 ✭✭✭ulsteru20s

True but guys like edogbo, murphy have the stuff to be elite props imo. Of course its a risk and you don't want them all to move positions but they need some of them to.

Good chunk of the great tightheads historically come from agriculture backgrounds

Edogbo and Murphy arent going to move to the front row at this stage.
