    The cost of county teams rose this year from €962.5K to €1,204.3K with the expenses broken up as follows – S.H. €590K, S.F. €360K, U-20 H. €109K, U-20 F. €25.8K, M.H. €100K, M.F. €74.2K.

Guess we should drop u20 and minor hurling too, we’d save loads.

The fact is we paid €1.2 million in 2023 for a total of 1 championship win. It’s not a hurling thing for a football thing, we are just not doing enough to compete. There are serious issues in player development from a young age where we have been left behind by other counties.

    Regarding Senior football

The huge delay by the County board in appointing a senior football management team at the last minute when other counties were already back in training has been detrimental to the team, so obviously our fitness and conditioning are way off.

Some of our best players like Conor Murray,Brian Lynch are gone travelling.Daragh Corcoran is unavailable unfortunately and one of our best players Brian Looby is now on the hurling panel.

One of the biggest issues is good footballers sitting on extended hurling panels for long periods of time and never ever making it onto hurling matchday squads.

Davy also set up a senior hurling development squad this year on top of the existing hurling team which has had an effect on the Waterford football panel's strength and depth.

This junior football championship is played over 1 weekend in the summer by Kilkenny, New York's second team and finalists of the British junior football championship.

We have plenty of talent to compete at Div 3 and 4 of the league and tailteann cup.Waterford have had a senior football team for over 100 years.

There is huge work being done with Waterford football development squads at u14 u15 u16 age groups at present where we are not just competing but beating counties in football.

We need players to want to play the highest level of football they can and wear the county football jersey, not committing because it's not trendy to be on the Waterford football team

The football clubs in particular need to lead the way in driving on the county football team.

Cavan,Fermanagh and louth senior hurling teams and other's had to fight this year for their very existence to represent their counties at senior hurling,Waterford should never consider getting rid of our Senior football team.

    Still no sponsor?

  • Registered Users Posts: 23 Dublin Dave 2014

Really bad reflection on county board not to have secured a sponsor for the 2024 season & we are now in February.

  • Registered Users Posts: 899 ✭✭✭DiscoStew

    I agree, very bad look.

But on the other side, is it better to just take any sponsorship deal on offer to have it secured prior to the 2024 season & have the jerseys on sale? Or is it better to fight for the best deal possible.

Hard to say when we don’t know what proposals they’ve had, if any. Perhaps the board have had to approach sponsors themselves rather than the other way around. Wouldn’t be a shock given our results of the past few years.

I’d question the “huge delay” here. Can you imagine how many people they had to approach before they got someone to commit? It’s probably the least attractive gig in gaelic football. Even after Shankey was appointed, he had huge difficulty in getting any sort of management team together.

I’m not saying the board are doing any way well when it comes to turning around our football fortunes, but I don’t think there was any delay on the football appointment, other than being unable to secure a suitable candidate.

There is some small green shoots in the underage development squads of late as has been mentioned, and fair play to those who put those managements in place, gave them the backing and the managements themselves for their efforts. But given the state of affairs at adult inter county level it’s hard to see how this will translate into positive change at the top end, in my eyes at least.

It probably comes back to the clubs and asking more of the clubs in terms of promoting football, with support of our Deise Og coaches.

We’ve often had joint captains before, as do other counties. Tipp have a vice captain.

Don't be talking sense and go with the narrative of "all Davy again"

Does a ‘joint captain’ scenario mean there are also ‘joint vice captains’….?

by the way who are the joint captains…….Stephen bennett and one of the ballygunner lads….?

Starting to feel sorry for Greg from azzuri for the daily video trying to flog the Waterford gaa range .,Days away from the start of the league is when you should have a new and exciting range while the hope is still there . Was looking around elverys Clonmel and noticing the quality of the o Neil’s Tipperary merchandise especially the crest compared to the washed out look we have to put up to . At least give us some crumbs of excitement?

  • Registered Users Posts: 38,386 ✭✭✭✭PTH2009

If we ever go to O Neills our stuff would be similar to Laois and Monaghans

Laois former Azzuri tenants, always loved the Sligo gear also

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,839 ✭✭✭Cake Man

I said it before here, if it wasn't for the fact that Azzurri is a Waterford based company we would have gone (back) to O'Neills long ago. Agree that their gear is very tidy. To be fair they have come a long way in the last decade or so, they now sponsor a few soccer clubs, international teams and I recently saw they also do the gear for Penrith Panthers (the current rugby league champions/#1 team here in Aus) so they are getting great exposure which can only help them grow. The sponsorship debacle is a disaster for Azzurri given how it no doubts hampers sales and interest.

Any news for Sunday? Will we see any more regulars included (Dessie, Billy Nolan, Jamie Barron etc.) or will Davy give more game time to the newer lads? A win would be nice given that a) we don't win many games these days against teams equal to or above us and b) our record against Clare in any competition the last few years is horrendous...

Remember last year when in the huddle the Waterford palyers bowing and taking deep breaths? The got slaughtered for it! Irish rugby team doing the same last Friday night in France and winning!! A lot of people out there ready and willing to stick the knife into Davy. Same as when McGrath was ruining hurling with a sweeper and now the same people are calling it anything but a sweeper- dropping someone deep!!! There are plenty of people out there ready to put the boot into Waterford, we don't need to be doing it ourselves.

SETU Waterford into the Fitz semi against Mary I after a hard fought 6 point win over Carlow.

Padraig Fitz was brilliant with 6 from play before a late red (2 yellows). Patrick Fitzgerald also excellent and got the decisive goal. Thought Tom Barron was excellent on Eoin Cody with Billy Power as sweeper also effective. Sam Fitzgerald also done well, was named 4 but was out the field.

I was part of swords RFC when we first went o neills, we were the first irish team i know of to do rugby stuff with them , they told us they couldn't do a xxxxl jersey, we told them to get out of rugby gear so, they made it, gear was fantastic lost only oneor 2 jerseys a year

Grounding breathwork has been used by teams for years, Richie McCaw the ex all blacks captain was practicing something similar as far back as 15 years ago. Tbh a lot of people love sticking the knife into Davy, Laughable really as the man has won a trophy with every team he's managed at inter county level.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,193 ✭✭✭seananigans

Davy had a gilded oppurtuniy last year, league started with dublin antrim and laois, couldnt have been softer, and he messed it up, would he ever just stop feckarsing and just play the game, his tactics are crap and always were

  • Registered Users Posts: 100 ✭✭siyo

His tactics were good enough to win Munster in 10, an all Ireland in 13 and a Leinster in 19, possibly has a fitzgibbon too but not sure so wouldn't say crap and always were. I'm not saying the man is the second coming of Cody or Jim Gavin but the constant criticism his coaching/management receives is misplaced and becoming tedious on here.

He'll definitely move on to another county team after Waterford

He had the Galway job up until Henry's appointment came out of the blue

One thing you have to say about Davy is he loves the GAA and is committed

  • Registered Users Posts: 739 ✭✭✭TheScoringGoal

He was at best fourth choice for the Galway job.

  • Registered Users Posts: 236 ✭✭Jerry Atrick

Laughable...loves the moolah, GAA is the vessel.

Good discussion on Ballygunner players dropping out of the Waterford panel from 19.15 onwards

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,067 ✭✭✭Billy Ocean

Seen a few comments on social media complaining about this given there's 7 Ballygunner players on the panel and another 4 retired after decent stints.

  • Registered Users Posts: 301 ✭✭waterfordgirl

I also think some of the commentary is a bit harsh - Intercounty takes a lot of commitment and some are not willing or able to give that. Thats fine too. And no one should be discussed for making a choice thats right for them

Any sponsor by Sunday? That aside, where’s the new supporters club?
