Anyone offering you a quick turnover is trying to scam you; why would they offer and/or sell you the magical quick win rather than use it themselves? Don't get yourself scammed; stocks is for a time horizon of saving at least 5+ years only.

100%, the best piece of advice. Never "invest" in something you don't know anything about.

  • Registered Users Posts: 118 ✭✭Skipduke

Fair point thanks guys. I understand all that, by quick I mean not a 20/30 year return, I mean less than ~10 years return…. What’s hot what’s not ?

Wild, I jumped on late in the game but I'm still up 60%. Still has legs I reckon, up to $800 in no time I'd say!

I remember following the market in 2018/19 and people saying a recession had to happen, how the market couldn't just keep going up.

    And it did.

    A pandemic?

Not really related to a soaring stock market in the previous years.

    February 2019 - February 2020 the market rose 25%.

The results were good for Helium One. Went up over 100% on Monday.

Great shout, do you have much in them? Crazy rise since the start of the year.... 888%!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,340 ✭✭✭p to the e

It's a great rise for someone that got in at the bottom but the problem for long term holders like me is that 90% of their value was wiped over a fortnight at the end of December when they held a announced a placing at 10% of the price. Whoever took that up has made a killing so far. I have about 12K in them but my break even point is about 6GBX. Based on the recent good news it should rise more but who knows what can crop up. I've learned the hard way that AIM is a casino full of sharks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,887 ✭✭✭crushproof

Been burned by an AIM stock before so I feel your pain. It's like the wild west.

Sold about 6% of my Supermicro shares yesterday eve. Got in at $36 per share and sold at $650 per share so happy enough to take some profit, bought (added to) my Crocs stocks with the proceeds. Might do the same again today with another 6%.

Surprised at how far NIO shares have dropped. I was sure they would come good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,340 ✭✭✭p to the e

The big boys (Tesla and BYD) are dropping prices to grow sales in China and there's a lot more competition now from smaller players. Add to that, China is in a bit of an economic downturn. It may pan out for NIO in the long term but investors are very nervous of the EV market in China at the moment.

Does anyone know why the SMH ETF is not available to trade on Degiro?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 84,323 ✭✭✭✭Atlantic Dawn

That's the US domiciled version of it, as far as I know Irish residents can't trade in it. The Irish domiciled version of it is available if you run a search for VanEck Semiconductor, 6 versions on different exchanges and currency.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,887 ✭✭✭crushproof

I've been burned by NIO big time, considering the sheer growth in other Chinese EV firms it's been extremely disappointing. The rise of BYD especially has crushed companies like NIO. BYD sold 51700 in October in China vs NIO who sold just 4400. A massive gulf.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,843 ✭✭✭Patsy167

I guess I made the over simplistic assumption that the EV trend would raise all boats. I'm trying not to make the same mistake when picking AI companies.

I see Buffett sold over 10 million of Apple shares in Q4 2023. Reported price of $192. A small reduction for him, but still worth noting.

Holiday coming up so I'll be cashing in on NVDA today, looks like a strong pre market. Tasty profit but crazy that it has reached such highs.

    Hi Folks,

Any share picks for remainder of Feb?

    Anyone following 3M (MMM)?

I bought some 3m(MMM) recently. Currently at 10x cash flow and a ROIC of 20%, The compensation pay-out (hearing loss) will cost €6billion, which is about a years cash flow. A long term play for me, but with a solid company and a dividend of 6.5% it looks good to me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 523 ✭✭✭Stormington

    Hood.

Crypto pump in session (we're past the early part now) with the lowest cost of entry for US customers, pivoted to attracting an older crowd (with money and gold) and setting up in the UK (will be interesting to see how they do as Order Flow model is illegal iirc). Rising cost of living means people will gamble more to escape the rat race and Hood is like owning the race track and not a race horse. It's not as good as Coinbase for crypto or IBKR for stonks but its app is easy to use and has Citadel as its evil sugar daddy looking out for it.

Look at that base. The bigger the base the higher in space. I will add on weakness down to 12.5. Will bail if it stays below 12 for too long. See the gap below for areas to add. Green lines are areas to stop adding/sell.

Can see some shakiness in the market after such a big run up the last while.

A big company having poor earnings will rock it for a while.

Valuations looking very high at the moment.

BRK.B is up 35% in the last year.

    MSFT up 60%

    AMZN up 76%

    AMD up 114%

Would AMD be comparable with Nvidia? Don't amd do most of the computer chips in computers now?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Arts Moderators, Business & Finance Moderators, Entertainment Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 18,362 CMod ✭✭✭✭Nody

What's driving Nvidia currently is the AI chips; if you feel AMD will be able to catch up there then yes but there's a world of difference in types of computer chips and honestly if your understanding is that basic on the drivers I'd not suggest investing in either.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 118 ✭✭FaaF

I continuously think I've missed the boat on NVDA and have been repeatedly proven wrong.

In the chips sector, I did sell a cash secured put on ASML on Tuesday at a €780 strike for expiry on March 15th. I took in €780 in premium for that trade (less the negligible €1.10 commission).

It's now looking like I should have just bought the stock instead of selling the options but that doesn't fit in with the strategy of my account outside of my pension.

As I understand it, Nvidia make the fastest performance in AI chips, but AMD also have a an offering that is pretty efficient. Those chips are more cost effective with similar performance and when you consider the amount that will be put into data centers AMD might not be a bad move.

Silly market. Up another 1.5% today.

BRK.B is having a great year. Up 14.5% in just over a month.

It looks so toppy. I'm putting my portfolio into cash tomorrow. Up over 30% in 2 months - If I'd been offered that over three years when I invested back in December I'd have taken their arm off.

Took it 2 weeks to get to the $800, not too bad

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,887 ✭✭✭crushproof

Had a sell order at 800, didnt think it would get there after the drop below 700. Absolutely ridiculous and way over priced IMO.

Pays for my trip to Iceland so I'll take it and cross my fingers it doesn't reach $1000!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,104 ✭✭✭bcklschaps

There's been a great run in the AI space..... Now it's seems to be a case of squeezing the last few percent out of it before the music stops...... and try not to be the sucker holding the bag

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,887 ✭✭✭crushproof

Anyone on here still invested in Viking Therapeutics? I think they were tipped on here a few years ago. Looks like they've finally come good so well done to those who held! Unfortunately I am one of many who didn't have patience and got out a long time ago. Up 883% in a year.

CRH up 7% today on back on earnings growth forecast.

Slim pickings on the markets for someone looking to invest in 'value'. A few of the pharmaceuticals are at interesting levels but, of course, it's a risky sector and a promising pipeline can suddenly become almost worthless.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,061 ✭✭✭✭patsy_mccabe

My God, I see that Bill Gates (Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Trust) has sold out of almost all his stocks in Q4 2023. That's worrying. Source Dataroma.

Away from tech and pharma, look at Dollar General (DG)

I've bought in at 133 after it being suggested by a family member in the US.

It made errors, tried to move into middle market, had wrong stock, margins got squeezed, stock halved. Previous CEO has come back and reversed changes, back to basics, has targeted to get more $$ from its main working class customer base by introducing more food items and tight range of fresh items.

Good bet to return to $200+ over the summer

    Earnings 14th March

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 502 ✭✭✭notsocutehoor

    If only............

We all probably have a number of 'If only', today my if only is, if only I had held onto the 5,000 AMD shares (current price $201.34 as I type) I purchased in 2014/2015 for a total cost of $14,219.89...........

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 153 ✭✭bucky08

I have just came across this company from a work colleague. I-mab don't know much about them but they have a very good 12 month price increase prediction so I have bought some on just that alone. Take a look and make your own minds up. Here's hoping it's a good one.

US tech v fraughty at this stage esp when compared to European stocks... Good to take some off table when see stock going for multiple of purchase price...

  • Registered Users Posts: 817 ✭✭✭jams100

Small cap biotech and China based is enough for me to run a mile. Considering you 'don't know much about them' I'd say your chances are as good with doing the lotto.

So long as your ok losing every cent then I wish you the best of luck. (At least they have a decent balance sheet so shouldn't need to dilute in the very short term).

Reminds me a bit of my sister, she called me up all excited right before Christmas 2022 about how her friend she'd visited had told her to invest in AMC because they had watched a youtube video that all the short stock sellers in AMC would have to buy back their stock before the new year (for hand waved reasons referring to what happened to GameStop etc.). So it was going to sky rocket (this was after everyone on Reddit pulled into it "because it was a sure thing") to $500+ (it was around $50 at the time but as it was going to be a crunch again...) again and she was going to put all her savings into it and get rich quick and be able to stop working but she had called me to let me know. Thankfully I managed to talk her out of that idea (it's below $5 today) but the idea that someone would tell you how to get rich (or sell you the solution) instead of getting rich themselves never appear to have people stop and ask why. Some buy into the Bankman-Fried lies of "Oh I only want everyone to get rich" because it fits the narrative they wish to believe but honestly, why would anyone tell you how to get rich instead of simply doing it themselves?

Shades of 1999 right now, relentlessly bullish and add to that stocks are completely ignoring the fact that treasury yields have risen considerably this past two months after having fallen a lot post the feds November dovish statement

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,104 ✭✭✭bcklschaps

That was tipped back in the 2023 thread....when they moved their listing to the US around Nov. (availability of huge investment capital and undervaluation compared to US equivalent companies) Its worked out very nicely indeed. Think I bought for $54 it's about $83 now. I also bought some Flutter for the same reasoning, it hasn't been quite soo successful bought at $205 they are $215 now.
