Any Dacia Duster Drivers Here?

Hello, I have a question for any Duster Drivers here.

Have you had any issues with "very" uneven tyre wear?

I replaced my front tyres last April, the Bridgestone Duellers that were on it from previous owner had worn unevenly, just the 1st inch or so of the inner side of the tyre had worn really badly, almost like it was gauged out, the remainder of the tyre was perfect.

So I went and bought new Bridgestone weathercontrol all season tyres, got them fitted professionally, balanced, went one step further and had 4 wheel laser alignment done, the guy told me that they were perfectly aligned and was no need to adjust.

The car was only 3 years old then.

Have been keeping an eye on the new tyres since been fitted and low and behold, they are wearing again on the insides, now, 2 months short of having the new tyres on for a year only, I need new tyres again.

What an absolute waste of money.

I read somewhere that this is a common fault with the dusters, something to do with how they're designed with a negative camber?

Does anybody here have a Duster and suffered the same fate?

Has Dacia ever addressed the problem or compensated?

    The duster is a 192, 1.5 DCI

First question, is how much milage do you do?

Is it the front or rears that are wearing on the inside?

What pressure do you run in the tyre?

Do you do mainly motorway miles, or N roads? I had a car in the past, which had a negative camber by design, and it couldn't be adjusted without spending a lot of money on a never version of suspension component. As I did pretty much only motorway miles, the inside of the tyres would wear before the rest.

In mixed driving, or if you push the car hard when cornering, it will roll into the corner, soaking up that negative camber, and giving you the best contact patch with the ground when you need it most.

Higher cars like the Duster will roll more, and have more suspension travel, so the designers need to build in negative camber, so you don't run into positive camber during cornering, which would mean you lose grip.

Front tyres, keep them at 33 psi, inflate them when the tyre pressure light comes on in the dash, or sometimes before it ever does, lowest they ever get is 30 psi, mostly rural roads, R type roads as well as N roads, very little motorway miles, I have never owned a car (and I've owned many) that have suffered with their front tyres like the duster does, it's my only complaint about the car, it's been A1 reliability wise .

You didn't answer the most important question how much mileage did you put on the tyres since you got the new set.

What's the psi on the inside of your door? That tyre pressure sensor is set by you, so if I'd double check it's not been set too high.

I've an older Duster and do a massive amount of mixed driving. It doesn't get driven "lightly" either. No uneven tyre issues at all

it might be a good idea to get a second opinion on the wheel alignment.

Done a job on a Duster where the customer said the front tyres were wearing too fast, personally I didn't think it was excessive. Done the alignment several times and could never find a problem. Ended up changing the shock, spring, top mount and wish bone under warranty as we were getting sick of the car coming in. The alignment was pretty much the same before and after the work was carried out

There's been approximately 10k km put on the new tyres, recommend psi is 32, I roll with 33, I'll upload photos of the tyres so you can see just how "not normal" the tyre wear actually is.

what you can do is learn from your experience and rotate tyres more often and buy multi-directional tyres next time.

I don't really see the problem? The tyres are worn out and need replacing regardless of the uneven wear.

Wake me up when it's all over.

Yeah those tyres are thoroughly shagged all over, the inside is worn more yes but the middle is illegal and the outside is, or is very close.

    I'm partial to your abracadabra,

I'm raptured by the joy of it all.

  • I had a duster and never had a single issue with it. Tires were always as expected with no unevenness.

The Duster is a large heavy enough vehicle compared to a car so tyres are bound to wear earlier.

As you can imagine this didn't happen overnight, imagine having invested in a good brand tyre, with good reviews , best in class at stopping distance on cold wet roads, new tyres on for as little as 4 months and during a routine check noticing that yet again the insides were wearing out at a much faster pace, about €350 pissed away, of course I went and tried to get my money's worth with longevity, but they couldn't even make it to 10 months, as you can see .

    I've new tyres ordered.

Very disappointed in the car over this.

1300 kg I believe, give or take, not exactly a Landcruiser to be fair. Not happy at all with this .

Please tell me what year your duster was and what brand tyres were on it?

Yes, tyres apart, very reliable car.

    Thanks.

Is that €350 for tyres fitting balancing and disposal for all 4?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 109 ✭✭novaboy80

2 tyres, balanced and fitted, garage took care of the old tyres.

Are you saying that this could be "a thing" with Dusters then?

Ouch ok. If it was the price for all 4, you could argue that the price for the tyres was actually "low" but for two, yeah. Annoying. Mine cost me €135 a corner so less than yours and lasting 30k Kms easily

Kind of reading tea leaves here, but the wear pattern on both tyres looks very strange (to me at least).

It looks like a combination of being over inflated, and also toe/camber in.

Best in class stopping distance in the cold doesn't come from nowhere - tread design is some of it, but a performance tyre will almost always be made from a softer compound.

performance tyre will almost always be made from a softer compound.

It's a long time ago now(so long ago I forget the year) but I wore out a performance Hankook tyre in no time as the compound was soft for the extra performance.

Over inflation is definitely not something the tyres suffer from but I agree, the photos look exactly like how an over inflated tyre would wear.

Perhaps a more economical tyre is called for, at the cost of performance.

Honestly I don't know as that was the only one I seen do it. We had the car in a few times and couldn't see anything physically wrong so thats why we changed those parts as a last resort hoping it would fix the problem, the customer never came back while I was there I don't know if it actually fixed it. Might be worth trying dacia duster facebook groups and see if that is any help to you

Why are you not addressing the point that those tyres are illegal? it's not a question of the inner wearing while the rest is legal. You are pulling the píss here to be honest

I've had 2 Dacia Dusters, a 2017 and now a 2020. Never had this problem with either and I do a lot of mileage. I love them, particularly the higher spec 2020 car.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 109 ✭✭novaboy80

Mines the prestige model, I would love to find out your tyre brand and what tyre pressure you use?

    My tyres are 215/60/17.

Have 2 new Hankook Ventus Prime 4 K135's on it now and am hoping for a better return in mileage on them compared to the Bridgestones.

Are you 100% sure on the pressures? Are you checking them warm of cold?

I can't count the number of inaccurate pressure gauges I've come across in Garages on or cheap bicycle pumps, so I'm now very careful of my "good" one and keep it in a safe place.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 109 ✭✭novaboy80

Yeah, have my own compressor and separate digital pressure gauge, Always test when tyres are cold, it's clearly a Duster thing, must be, maybe they've rectified it with the 2020 model, you've a few folks on here who say they've never had the same tyre wear issue but one person who said that they came across it too.

It could be a Bridgestone thing. I bought two Bridgestone touranzas in a tyre shop in December, and replaced, worn-out in February with less than 1000 kms. Car has 46k and a clean nct and tracking straight. So currently a mystery and watching the new tyres for wear. I think they were bad tyres. Although I have been using Bridgestones for years on both bikes and cars trouble free.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 109 ✭✭novaboy80

That's very weird, anyone else drive the car and done wheelspins or something? Bridgestone are famous for making high performance and hard wearing tyres, maybe they were imitations or something, who knows, thought I had it rough just barely squeezing 10k km out of mine, but 1k km is very fishy .

Another strange Duster one. Turned the key, nothing happened for a few seconds and then dash lights started flicking on and off. Tried a few more times and eventually it started and drove off fine. Could this be a battery issue?

Just from past experience with other cars that I've owned, had this same problem a couple of times, ended up on both occasions been a loose connection at the battery terminal, loose or a build up of rust etc.

That would be the 1st thing I'd be checking.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,362 ✭✭✭PsychoPete

Sounds like a battery issue. Depending on the year those Renault batteries tend to only last around 5 years

But doesn't excellent grip etc. mean higher wear rates anyway.?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,428 ✭✭✭DaveyDave

On paper yes but in reality not necessarily? I replaced a set of Bridgestone Turanza T001 on my Golf at 22k and a set of Michelin Pilot Sport 4 at 26k. Probably could have gotten another 1-2k out of the PS4 but the rears had to be replaced due to cracking so did them at the same time. Not much in the difference but I'm guessing being able to maintain grip in day to day driving adds to the longevity.

Id say yes it does , the fact that they're all season tyres wouldn't help in the wear department when they spent most of their short lifespan over the summer months of last year but the rate at which they deteriorated was unacceptable, they're all season, not winter tyres, I'd have expected a super soft rubber type winter tyre to really suffer been driven on hot tarmac over the summer months but not an all season tyre.

In truth I had been expecting to get maybe 2 years out of them, max, but 10 months and as you can see from the photos, they were banjaxed!

So this time I have opted for summer tyres and will swap over to either a winter or all season for next winter, I should get more bang per buck in the long run.
