Question on Vodafone / Virgin sharing infrastructure (hope okay posting here)..

I saw an article a while back about Vodafone doing a deal with Virgin to share their infrastructure. Is this the case?

The only broadband I can get (Dublin city centre near Croke Park) is Virgin, so I'd like another option. Pure came out a few years ago and said a new Eircom telephone line was needed and basically said they weren't bothered, just go stick with Virgin. I would only get 80-90Mb anyway with this.

Odd one here but we are based in a cul de sac with just 7 houses.

4 of which are served by old school poles and cables while 3 of the newer ones are served via underground.

SIRO is live in the area now and the people with poles and cables are live.

I live in one of the houses served via underground, a box thingy was installed underground just at my gate.

We assumed we would go live the same as everyone else but it seems underground houses will be using open eir as they done the underground work.

No info anywhere as to when this will be going live while people in older houses are happy out with SIRO.

Im hoping someone in the know can explain why this is the case and maybe then i can guess when we might go live.

Im currently with Airwire and it was them who verified that this underground work was carried out by open eir but they have no info of when it will be going live.

Sounds very similar to my new build in lusk that we're moving into around december.

Sky, Eir and Three 5G broadband are available. The first 2 with supposedly 1GB fiber.

Virgin media site doesn't recognise the eircode yet however I do have a virgin media box ready to be used attached on the outside of the house..called them several times and just being told to keep checking the website.

    Hi All,

Couple of months ago I had my Eir fiber appointment "almost" completed.

Holes were drilled above my door in order to let the cable in, everything was going smoothly until the moment of digital socket installation.

It turned out that the digital socket couldn't be configured due to fiber "splicing" issue in our apartment block.

Whole process was cancelled and later during the day I received a phone call from some Eir manager saying that cabling will defiantly be fixed and operational on 31st of October. After that I was supposed to have someone get in touch with me and finish the process.

No-one reached out to me, my place is visible on bonkers.ie as fiber ready, no-one is respoding to my emails (I was trying to get in touch with customercare@openeir.ie). I tried calling eir but they said everything is cancelled, terminated and I would need to sign up for a new contract if I want to have the fiber installation finished.

Has anyone else been in the same situation and managed to get it sorted? I think I'll be resigning from Eir after this whole ordeal as it's scandalous that such a simple process requires me to pull hair out of my scalp...

Anyone have any experience of how long after you get Fibre wired to your house before you can expect to be connected ?

Back in august i got an eir card in through my door seeking permission to install fibre. Last week when i got home there was another card saying that fibre was now installed (there's a cable coming out of the ground spooled on the gable end of my house )

How long before i can order Fibre and get connected or are there still a few more phases of the build to go ? I would have thought bring the cable to the house was the finals stage.

You could order from a small retailer who would use the same eir infrastructure (fibre) and who are usually good pushing openeir.

Digiweb is one that springs to mind.

  • Registered Users Posts: 17 VirginMary

I'd also be keen to get an answer to this question, if anyone could oblige. The fibre has been pushed into the house now - what are the next steps before I could, for example, get broadband set up with Sky?

We've updated the database today for OpenEIR FTTC/FTTH at https://www.airwire.ie/avail

Current data is based on OpenEIR data from 23. January 2024.

Saw them working in my estate in the weeks before Christmas and confirmed now that eir ftth is going live from tomorrow. Carrigtwohill in East Cork.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 943 ✭✭✭kenyard

How long after the works were done did it take to go live?

I've also had cables installed last week (openeir I believe)

Would be good to know how long before they update their servers, it spreads to providers and finally offered by companies.

But it sounds like it was just over a month for you

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 943 ✭✭✭kenyard

Hmm a bit longer than I was hoping.

From reading their website it reads like they update once a month so was hoping it would be max 4 weeks. But the network providers need to update their systems from openeir's then also.

Still I've read horror shows about people waiting months.. and I know it's gonna be up soon so 2 months isn't the end of the world...

I'll keep an eye on the openeir website.

    Thanks for replying mate.

Reason I was asking is my ADSL line is **** and I'm on a reduced speed to stop it disconnecting. It barely runs one 4k stream and people using their phone at the same time can cause it to buffer. Will be glad to get with the times...

  • Registered Users Posts: 49 William_Flynn

If there are phone poles or your phone is via a duct it is lightly to be quicker. However if there are no ducts or telephone poles, you could be waiting years.

The town I'm it was a month or two for people with telephone poles to be connected via an over head cable. However it has been more than three years and still not connected, where they need to dig up the footpath to install a duct.

Eir 1Gb FTTH order put in last week, installation due for Monday. Rather anxious about it as I'm not sure how the fibre is going to go into my apartment. Has anyone ran into obstacles with installation that require interventions like digging, drilling, making a mess? I'll probably just cancel if extreme measures need to be taken.

It's also worth mentioning that out of the 20 or so apartments, there are only two eligible for FTTH for some reason. No idea why.

Normally apartment blocks are dealt with in one go, with fiber run to boxes above apartment doors. It also needs co-operation from the OMC. What happened today?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,144 ✭✭✭pm.

I had the very same from an Eir sales rep. I'm currently with Digiweb siro 1gig and it has never failed me, I also like the mesh wifi as it means no black spots around the house. Is Eir FTTH a superior product? I have my doubts

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 198 ✭✭brio09

It was a performance improvement for me from Virgin media "fiber" or vodafone DSL. I don't know about comparing it with digiweb siro 1gig.

my ping is 6ms, download 870mbps, upload 104mbps.

    1. do you feel your speed is sufficient for you?
    2. what are your upload, download, and pings?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,144 ✭✭✭pm.

    Hey

Yes I feel the speed is brilliant and when plugged in I'm getting almost the full 1 gig dl and 100 ul... I didnt have any real interest about moving but just wanted to know if Eir is a superior product over digi web siro

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 16,980 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gonzo

Eir are basically the same as Digiweb and other providers on Siro. Same speeds but the only exception is some providers provide 2 gig services to OpenEir IFN towns and Siro areas. Eir do not have a 2 gig plan as far as I know. The only other difference is ping and Eir's are probably the lowest in the country to Irish and UK servers.

For Siro, The openeir app seems to be broken or wants a login all of a sudden.

Is the oebroadband checker the only alternative?

Yes they seem to have removed access to the old checker. The new one doesn’t seem to be up to date either. Eir.ie is giving me a live date for FTTH and Sky is showing available but the new OpenEir checker is still saying we’ll get to you eventually some day etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,632 ✭✭✭archfi

I've noticed eir markings on the paths outside my apartment complex the last two weeks or so, I'm wondering generally how long from when these appear to the actual work being carried out?

The oebroadbandchecker site says it's coming to my address but no further info.

The complex is currently Virgin Fibre cabled (with a ridiculously big box in house) so when openeir comes is that another ont box inside the home?

The issue is never the issue; the issue is always the revolution.

The Entryism process: 1) Demand access; 2) Demand accommodation; 3) Demand a seat at the table; 4) Demand to run the table; 5) Demand to run the institution; 6) Run the institution to produce more activists and policy until they run it into the ground.

Is the openeir site that shows rollout of gigabit on a map still available?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,468 ✭✭✭✭Blazer

apparently Charleville is getting it here in Cork. Workmen was installing fibre all today and they were saying they were doing the whole town. Fingers crossed. I’m slumming it at the moment with 100meg.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 741 ✭✭✭Cushtie

Anyone know if it's possible to get a rough estimate of when they will be rolling out an area. The openeir site just says my Eircode is included but no indication at all of time frame?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,349 ✭✭✭✭starlit

If it’s available based on your eir code it should be available to order fibre broadband but depending on your area will determine how quickly they will role it out. There can be delays. Eir and the installation company should give you a rough idea when it be rolled out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11 George_Kaplan

We've had crews on our road installing DPs and replacing some poles in the last few weeks. I noticed that only one connection has been made to each DP.

Has anyone an idea on what work remains to be done?

I know that fibre has been laid outside my home for last 5 years, coming from the local exchange to service an area 600m further out. I am sick of the so close but yet so far!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,706 ✭✭✭✭The Cush

The single cable in will the main fibre cable into the DP. The installer on the day will bring a cable to your house from a DP assigned to your address

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11 George_Kaplan

Thanks a lot for the insight, sounds like a waiting game now.

Three companies offer fiber. Siro, openeir or Virgin

    Siro - https://siro.ie/search-your-address/

    Openeir- https://www.oebroadbandchecker.com

    Vodafone- https://www.virginmedia.ie/broadband/buy-a-broadband-package/

I have experience with openeir. This is my timeline

Generic statement on the website I'm on the plan by 2026 since 1+ year ago

January - works done by circet in my town across a few days. Black cable run up esb pole nearby and left in a loop

March - black box attached to cable - photo above.

May - Oebroadband checker link above updated to state works are in progress in my area.

I live in a small village in Kerry and currently on 21Down/4Up. Not terrible but not great either. Eir said they were upgrading the local exchange two months ago in prep for fibre and when you look up airwire.ie it says no more vDSL ports available. Then last week KN Circet vans were on my street and around the village. They were opening the Eir manhole covers and had a reel of fibre on the back of the truck. I spoke to them and they said all the fibre was already in place and they were putting in some to the end of our road which is a cul de sac. I know its not much to go on but I am just wondering based on that info would anyone hazard a guess as to when FTTH might be available?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,468 ✭✭✭✭Blazer

its probably coming soon especially if you see them wiring up in the village. Same for Charleville..all the eir manholes were wired up since last year but only a fraction of the estate could get ftth. Last month I saw KN around them with huge reels of fibre and they told me the same as you… I also saw them in the middle of the town doing the same and about a month later I saw that the openeir site is saying build is currently ongoing in my area. Lol its already finished and Vodafone reps were already around trying to sign up customers. So hopefully same for you..keep an eye on the openeir site.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11 George_Kaplan

    My timeline was:

    1) Cabling work by Openeir on my road (rural Tipperary) late March this year.

    2) DPs installed - mid April

    3) Some poles replaced, so DPs down and back up on new poles - start of May

    4) Vodaphone rep out last week for signup with an 8 week wait for install

    5) Area went "live" on oebroadband checker today, it was in "progress" for a few days only

I'm in an NBI area(2026) with fibre running past my house (7 mbps DSL) for 5 years, passing by ~50 houses to service a cluster of 10 houses farther out from the exchange 🤔

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 189 ✭✭brimur69

I'm delighted! Just had the same, Vodafone rep just called to the house saying it was going live at the end of June. I asked him about Vodafone fair use policy and he said as far as he knew that was gone but he didn't sound too sure.

  • Registered Users Posts: 121 ✭✭pg17

Is the map or other detail of eir's urban fibre plan available to view.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,468 ✭✭✭✭Blazer

    nice :),

However while Vodafone were the first to contact me they still never send me the welcome pack or any information on when they will do it.

Sky show it available to order and gave me a date of the 10th for the engineer to see it up so I went with them.

Only problem is you’re limited to 1gb.

Blacknight are upto date and show the 2gb available to me for order so considering them as well..if they reply to my quote request.

We have being showing up with a target date of 2026 on the NBI plan. 2 or 3 weeks I called Eir just to see if it would come any sooner as they seemed to have already put up cables on the road. They told me it was with the NBI and we would have to wait till 2026.

Then today they called and told my mother we can get Eir broadband in a month. They said we can get 500 MB or 1GB internet. We used to have dialup (about 6 MB) and have had 5G but that has been super unstable and had being considering starlink as a stopgap.

Is Eir the same install process as NBI? They told me when I asked a few weeks back that the copper line would be removed when they install. Is that true as we have a medical alarm in the house.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 943 ✭✭✭kenyard

NBI has two separate providers. Openeir and another (siro?)

Both are similar and in major towns both are rolling out but in rural it's mostly one or the other. Note openeir is not eir.

both of these rollouts are now offering up to 2gb on recent upgrades.

the internet providers use other companies to sell to you. Eir, Vodafone, sky etc..

only sky and blackknight offer the 2gb packages as it needs "better" equipment (sfp+).

longterm this fiber should be capable of 10gb.

the copper connection shouldn't be affected per say but this uses a new line. I don't know how your system will work I suggest speak to someone knowledgeable in the area

NBI don't use OpenEir or SIRO fibre, they are another (State subsidised) wholesale FTTH provider set up to provide fibre to the places commercial operators such as OpenEir, SIRO and Virgin don't service and don't plan to in the near future.

NBI do lease space on OpenEir poles and ducts but they string their own fibre using it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,706 ✭✭✭✭The Cush

    Confusing post.

There are 3 national wholesale fibre providers; OpenEir, Siro and NBI (4 if you add in Virgin Media).

They each rollout and operate their own networks.

NBI is rolling out their network under the state's National Broadband Plan contract.

Retail providers connect premises via one of these fibre networks.

Wholesale provider OpenEir and retail provider eir are part of the eircom group.

NBI's fibre network is 10 Gbps symmetrical from the start. OpenEir and Siro are rolling out 10 Gbps fibre now iirc and may upgrade older parts of their networks in future.

Some retail providers offer up to 2 Gbps on these networks.
