Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. Yeah I think Ferrari and Red Bull don't go mad on the carbon fiber display like others - no idea if they don't need to save the weight or it's a sponsor obligation thing. I can imagine if Ferrari decided to turn up with a mostly black car there would be uproar. 😁

Maybe a stupid question, but couldn't they colour they colour the carbon fiber as they are moulding it?

You are absolutely right actually!! Maybe something to do with Sunday being a working day in the ME and Sat being their equivalent to our Sun?

I hope they do so the FIA mandate some sort of coverage for the cars with colour.

They were both on sundays last year. I seem to vaguely remember it being mentioned when the calendar for this year was released, but cant remember what the reason was.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,259 ✭✭✭✭flazio

Not a stupid question, Alex Brundle asked this on his instagram story and got back a reply that colouring the carbon fibre during the construction process weakens it. Black carbon fibre is the strongest carbon fibre.

You could put 6 kilos of paint of Verstappens car and he'd still probably run away with the championship.

Vcarb look like they've gone down the blue and silver colour scheme similar to the toro rosso around 2018, going by the teaser shots my expectations are good for it.

Is there a reason why the teams use the sky presenters for the livery launches?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,897 ✭✭✭Hijpo

How strong does it need to be for aero?

Can't see it having to withstand impact the speeds they go everything gets smashed up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,569 ✭✭✭✭El_Duderino 09

Depends how much additional colour would affect it. The cars often bump and get small knocks like aero coming off other cars. Sometimes a bump can create a small hole. That's better than the whole part coming off.

Aero presumably experiences huge stress from the air and g-force. No good if it starts to disintegrate before the end of a race.

I don't pretend to know anything about it BTW, just imagining the stresses on external parts

Think Williams used Will Buxton. Just depends on who's available. Although I do remember in 2021, while we still semi locked down, Mercedes-Benz launched in Brackley and got Whisper productions (Channel 4 F1 company) to produce the TV presentation. That was presented by Steve Jones, now usually in these things, the questions the hosts ask are usually pretty PR friendly. Steve was having none of that. He pressed both Lewis and Toto on why at the time Lewis was very non committal on his contract. Last year it was Naomi Schiff and Natalie Pinkham who did the launch so make of that what you will.

Ramadan starts on the 10th of March, which is the Sunday of the Jeddah race weekend, so that race weekend will start a day early to avoid it. As a result they also pushed back Bahrain by a day so the teams have the same amount of time for travel etc as usual between Bahrain and Jeddah instead of having a day less.

thats a little beauty, love the splashes of red and white!

That Amex laser card riding bullets car is tasty looking.

Re. Albon above, I think he's better off waiting and seeing. A seat with red bull in 2026 might be nice, but there's the issue if being bullied by max again, and the new engine they are building which is a first for them. He's a decent driver and a seat at somewhere like Mercedes or Aston Martin where I reckon he'd have a better chance of becoming a number 1 driver might be better...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,979 ✭✭✭✭Frank Bullitt

There were already rumblings from other teams not being happy that Visa RB would be getting technical help from Red Bull...so it begins.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,259 ✭✭✭✭flazio

I really really hope Albon doesn't go there. Being a number 1 driver at a resurgent midfield team is a much better place than ANY number 2 driver slot top or bottom of the grid.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,011 ✭✭✭thefa

I don’t know. Red Bull would be a great spot to put himself in a position to win the odd race and collect a lot more podiums. Given the talent pool, it’s very unlikely he’ll ever head up a top team.

I think Mercedes seems on paper a more natural fit but can see why a return to Red Bull would be appealing.

Depends whether he’s happy to play second fiddle to Max again but the team has shown more patience with Perez after the Albon/Gasly experiments and Albon himself is a lot more experienced.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,088 ✭✭✭muckwarrior

But they're not the only team to switch to pull rod suspension this year. Unless there's something else there I'm missing?

  • Moderators, Education Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 10,798 Mod ✭✭✭✭artanevilla

You can buy suspension off other teams, it's a transferable component.

No no I know, they are getting the best set up on the grid though, plus there will be plenty of other parts from the main team on it as well, from what I have read.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,979 ✭✭✭✭Frank Bullitt

Seems like it has the RB19s rear and front suspension, not bad parts to have on your car.

Just watched that, it is interested how much more closely the team will be, not just technically but physically. And the new hires are impressive.

More experienced yes but faster? Smashing Latifi and Sargeant doesn’t exactly scream this guy is ready for Red Bull / Ferrari / Mercedes. If he goes back to Red Bull Verstappen will psychologically destroy him all over again.

Albon will never be champion - he’s a Barrichello/Irvine/Trulli type; ideal number 2 for a title challenger or a number 1 at a mid/lower grid team. Nothing wrong with that, certainly worthy of his place on the grid; the same can’t be said for a few other drivers (including his Williams teammates)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,011 ✭✭✭thefa

Completely agree on his ceiling and I can see how beating Latifi and Sargeant is nothing to write home about. That said, we all knew there was talent in Russell who was limited to comparisons with Lattiffi for the most part before getting a run out in the Merc when Hamilton got Covid. Don’t think he’s at Russell’s level but not fair to dismiss on having a crap teammate particularly when the Williams in 2023 wasn’t a great car but Albon’s qualifying was very competitive at times against better cars.

So I feel like he is faster. I do think he’s capable of improving quali times over Perez, which could be said for a number of options. Of course it’s a possibility that he might melt under the pressure again but you would hope that’s where the added experience came in.

Let’s put it this way, I’m not sure is he the best driver that might be available to Red Bull, bringing the certainty and ability someone like Sainz would if still available, but might be a very good fit if they remain the dominant car. Has he shown less than say Ricciardo recently?

His pace relative to Latifi was far better than Russell's performance the year before if you look at laptime analyses. If he had the chance to take Hamilton's seat (though if I was Merc I'd target Sainz or try to poach Norris first) he'd have a great chance of being their number 1 driver and being a title contender there. He's obviously nowhere near the level of a Verstappen or an Alonso, but we've seen drivers no better than him like Rosberg and Villeneuve win titles by being in the right place at the right time.

Albon is also a very canny driver. Himself, Sainz and Alonso come across as the drivers being most clued into what's going on, which definitely stands for something.

Russell might be faster in raw pace, but he's not as clever a driver and has a tendency to have people turn into him (definitely not his fault, definitely the other drivers are wrong...)
