Another half a billion there please Mr Taxpayer, thanks, good lad. Need to get sandals for the construction workers.

We're now 8 years in and still no hospital!

All we need now is "Children's Hospital the Musical"

There simply has to be dirty money being shifted around here. Can't wait to see the perpetrators in the gallows for this one.

    Zero accountability.

We're looking at 6-7 times over budget and 8+ years late. Final costs still unknown.

Projects completed since the children's hospital started:

Allegiant stadium, las Vegas- 2017-2020 ($1.9b)

    Premiere tower, Melbourne - 2017-2021 (450m AUD)

    Toranomon-Azabudai District (Tokyo's tallest skyscraper) - 2019 - 2023 $4.4b)

Surely as part of this building (and going forward for all other government projects) it should have been put out to tender with the stipulation that only fixed price contract offers will be accepted.I guess when you have a blank cheque being signed by the taxpayer you don't have to care too much about keeping costs under control.

The one thing we know about this is that no lessons will be learned and there will be more money squandered on other state projects in the near future.

Would have been cheaper to build it on the moon !

Who in their right mind would employ a builder to build a house/extension with an open ended no timeline and a blank cheque?

So why would you adopt this policy on building national infrastructure....its a joke but guess what the jokes on you the dope that gets up at 6.30 and travels to work.

Like RTE and the other unmentionable dip thats in vogue at the moment all thanks to the taxpayers pocket.

100% agree but the issue was that this was rushed to tender because it was politically damaging to the government to admit it wasn't ready to start after so many delays.

The plans were not finalised and the whole thing was a mess. It would be impossible to submit a fixed price for the work when it wasn't fully known what was to be done.

BTW I'm not defending BAM here. They completely took advantage of the situation knowing they had a blank check but the planning and organisation of this has been a **** show from the start. It borders on criminal negligence on the government's part. To think many want the government building houses!

The NCH really is the gift that keeps on giving. A running joke for almost a decade now.

TBH I wouldn’t be surprised if they turn it into an ‘asylum seeker’ accommodation centre and wait for it to be burnt down to get some return on investment from the insurance. Then maybe we can snap back to reality and start again, building the hospital off the M50 instead of in the city centre would be a good start.

O'Reilly should have been up on charges long ago for some of the stunts he pulled.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,179 ✭✭✭Cluedo Monopoly

Deciding to build it in an oval shaped has also contributed to the spiraling costs. A basic design decision like that has led to so much waste and delays. BAM are creaming it in change requests.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

it was rushed to tender because new eu rules were coming in on the following ja 1st, which meant they could not go ahead with it

I heard paschal saying the metro won't go over budget because of lessons learned from the kids hospital

On that basis they should never be elected again

It was a very expensive lesson

It's apt that it's shaped like a fanny... Because we're being relentlessly fcked

People seem to be forgetting this is a children's hospital. I don't give a sh1te how much it costs tbh. If we've the the best children's hospital in the world it'll be good value.

  • Registered Users Posts: 24,359 ✭✭✭✭lawred2

Has he detailed what these lessons learned are? Anyone asked for specifics?

The bit I mentioned caused me to vomit violently and I didn't listen to the rest, but I think it went unquestioned

The Mater is less prestigious than St. James's Hospital. It is the largest hospital in Ireland, the national stem cell transplant centre and the leading hospital in terms off Cancer care. It is already very linked with CHI and likely after the move to James's site the labs in the Children's hospital and James's will be aligned to some degree, particularly likely given both are leading hospitals for genetic testing in Ireland.

    Why???

Dublin has the largest population by a huge number in the country.

Where else should it have been located?

This is a microcosm - expensive one- of the issues with our health and other services as to why they often are well resourced but under deliver. In a nutshell political interference - a certain person still in high elected office rushed the fences in terms of,announcing this, wanting to play Mr Popular when the design etc was, half, formed. I have no doubt it will be amazing and state of the art etc but it has added a new term to political debate here re runaway costs “ x will be a new children’s hospital “ our political system is now a popularity contest, bribing us with our own money.

I'm sure the project that has been a disaster from the very start will end up as the very best in the world. Real sure. Nothing could possibly go wrong from here on in.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,083 ✭✭✭Rubberchikken

Anyone who thinks this will be the best children's hospital in the world needs to stop, wake up to where you are and pay attention to those that have been involved in this utter shambles from the beginning, and realise you are a fool.

This is a monstrous waste of money. An obvious example of people in over their head who haven't a clue what they're doing. A construction company that should be forensically looked into. And politicians who should be deeply ashamed of themselves.

Bigger, better built structures have gone up in less time.

Only here would this shite be accepted and will be celebrated on national tv sometime in the dark distant future

That's if that shower in rte are still there too.

Anywhere close to the M50 would have been ideal for all the Country including Dublin.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,609 ✭✭✭thinkabouit

Passed it a couple weeks ago, it stands out like a sore thumb.

looks like the Aviva Stadiums first cousin!

Staggering waste of money, Typical of a lot of stuff built these days.

Style and Architecture over Practicality and Simplicity & cost.

For that money it surely has its own nuclear reactor or windmills producing its energy?

Dublin having the largest population doesn't mean it should be in it. It is a NATIONAL hospital

Imagine planting this yoke in a residential area the mind truly boggles. I don't think people appreciate just how much money 2.4 billion is. This should have been built in Athlone or Tullamore or somewhere central and they could have built motorways from the entire country to it for that kind of money and constructed the hospital if they were in any way competent. ''but Dublin has good public transport''-sick children and their parents do not get the train up to Dublin and hop on a luas they drive. The whole thing is a scandal and there should be public inquiries into it

But at least the government are fighting tooth and nail to not take Apple's 13 billion :)

When they broke ground and found a river of liquid sand underneath they should have reconsidered the stupid location, but that was a political crony decision so they didn't.

Most of the cost over runs go back to building it in the wrong place. It will be a nightmare for anyone to get to - even Dubliners.

He said NCH authorities are confident that the €2.24bn is “within the ball park” when it comes to the final bill.

    Jaysus.

A ballpark figure is a rough numerical estimate or approximation of the value of something that is otherwise unknown.

    I'll go with 2.6 - 2.8 billion.

Yea, anything that's not square and its get out the chequebook time. I'd love to see the contract for the job, yes it must be design and build but surely the design intent should have been factored into the cost?

First they came for the socialists...
