Catherine Martin has indeed done nothing. It's beyond inept. She seems completely intimidated.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

In fairness to Callan, I'd say that pay rate is correct. @Hotmail what do you think he should be paid?

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,272 ✭✭✭Dick phelan

Just close this shambles down. People responsible for this nonsense are still in power there and the one's who aren't are giving us two fingers and refusing to answer questions. Forget about discussing how to fund this organization, let it go private and stop wasting taxpayer money.

What more did you expect from a Green minister - she's still probably trying to work how she has a position of power while watching the lettuce grow

  • Registered Users Posts: 20,432 ✭✭✭✭kneemos

He's getting more than Pat Kenny per hour. Around 400,000 apparently for a three hour show.

No idea what he'd be getting for a one hour show in a private station. Maybe fifty or sixty grand?

No more than 100 grand. Do you think anyone on private radio is paid close to 150k for an hours radio a day.

RTE is completely broke as well don't forget.

Do you think a broke radio station is able to pay 150k a year for someone doing an hour a day for 42 weeks a year.

  • Registered Users Posts: 17,506 ✭✭✭✭fritzelly

You'd think someone there might go... well the previous presenter is now getting X for 3 times the hours so maybe we should calculate it based on that... but no, must pay stupid wages

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,234 ✭✭✭Viscount Aggro

I stopped paying the licence fee, because the RTE symbol on top right of screen.. it's driving me crazy... Can't stop staring at it. I tried covering it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,395 ✭✭✭MrMusician18

No, they shouldn't calculate on that. If they were set on Callan then they should have tried to find his minimum number. Callans number would have to exceed other income he could make during this time.

To do this radio show, callan would likely have to forego other work which might include touring for example so maybe that's how they landed on €150k.

Did Brida O'Keeffe sign her own check for 450,000 Euro's when she was running in her direct replacement. Did Dee Forbes say, ye it'll be Grand its just jam. If so someone should be in jail

    No change indeed.

When Bakhurst offered Tubridy a new contract we should have been calling for his head there and then.

  • Registered Users Posts: 20,432 ✭✭✭✭kneemos

He stated himself that there wasn't any negotiation.

And if she hasn't done anything by now she is not going to do anything. What she is going to do now is keep kicking the can down the road till the election is called and then she can pass the buck to whoever takes over and she can wash her hands of it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 17,506 ✭✭✭✭fritzelly

Ermm no - if your minimum is I need this much to do the job to give up my other stuff they should have said fine, we'll get someone else - this is a magazine show at best, it's a filler show to 10am, no way deserving of 150k.

Really its a 50-60k (very good wage for the hours) intro show for someone getting in to the business

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,559 ✭✭✭✭machiavellianme

In what world is that pay rate correct?

Our TDs get €107k for a full time roll, but a comedian on the radio for 1 hour a day is worth nearly 50% more?

I'd reckon €150 per hour would be more than fair, so €30k per annum. There's surely lots of capable folk out there who would gladly do it for that and have the rest of the day off to make money elsewhere or play golf or whatever. Many specialised Hospital Consultants, the good folk in flight control at Dublin Airport or in the National Control Centre in Eirgrid keeping the lights on for the whole country wouldn't even see €150 per hour, why should Callan - it's hardly a matter of life and death?

Okay, I've had it. I've been compliant for years but I will be rounding down my TV license payment to zero from now on.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,238 ✭✭✭Widdensushi

The td salary seems about right, the amount of friends and family they are allowed to hire seems a bit ridiculous , anyway, going of topic.

  • Registered Users Posts: 387 ✭✭RunningFlyer

    Rounding down from €450k to €400k 🤣🤣🤣🤡🤡

    Tear it down.

What this week has really shown us is that incompetence is rewarded in our public service e.g. Coveney . I blame FFG for allowing a mechanism that to exist.

He resigned. He should get nothing.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

A list of Executives that left RTÉ during Dee Forbes Reign.

    1. 2016 Kevin Bakhurst (Deputy Director General, MD News and Current Affairs, Acting DG before arrival of Dee Forbes)
    2. 2016 Glen Killane (Director of TV)
    3. 2017 Múirne Laffan (Chief Digital Officer)
    4. 2018 Willie O'Reilly (Director of Commercial)
    5. 2018 Brian Dalton (Director of Corporate Development)
    6. 2018 Frances Abeton (Director of Operations and Production Services)
    7. 2020 Breda O'Keefe (CFO)
    8. 2022 Jon Williams (MD News and Current Affairs)

    The annual reports show

    €700,000 in 2017,

    €600,000 in 2018,

    €600,000 in 2019,

    €400,000 in 2020 and

    €300,000 being paid in 2022,

The 2017 payments says they were “in accordance with the terms of the Voluntary Exit Package 2017 programme”.

If I am reading 2017 annual report correctly no "termination benefits" were paid in 2016.

How far does this culture of golden handshakes go back? Maybe several decades.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,993 ✭✭✭RoTelly

It will put Bakhurst in a very bad position if he took a golden handshake when he left to go to OfCom in 2016. 2017 AR suggests he did not receive such a payment nor did Glen Killane.

I also believe its not just Senior executives that would have got this type of treatment, Bill Malone former Controller of RTÉ2 moved to TV3 in 2016, leading Adrian Lynch to become control of RTÉ ONE and 2, up until Glen Killane left, and he was put in as Director of Channels, Audiences and Marketing.

I said eight months ago that the exit packages were the depth charges that would rock RTÉ to its foundations. The Tubridy payments, the Toy Show musical and the barter accounts were scandalous but the staff were on board until the whole thing blew up. The exit packages will destroy the organisation because RTÉ staff can see their bosses were lining their own pockets while deserting the sinking ship.

I am shocked that the Taoiseach and the Minister responsible say that Breda O'Keeffe has a "moral" obligation to repay this money. Could it possibly be the Government believe it is legal (though obviously not moral) for the Head of a State Agency to pay large sums to a colleague in defiance of all regulations, governance and procedures? And to Rory Coveney?

Based on the limited facts available, what law might Dee Forbes have broken? No one has ever been convicted of anything like this in Ireland and that's not for want of examples. Just look as those government-funded charities. The Gardai wouldn't even be aware of this outrage but for the fuss about Tubridy/Renault and, if Dee Forbes were to be charged, the DPP would be scrambling to find a suitable offence on our statute book and to run the first trial of a public official in Ireland arising from their mis-management of public funds.

She is lucky RTÉ is not funded by the EU. Ireland recently brought in a special law criminalising the "misappropriation" of EU funds which would cover exactly this sort of thing but the Oireachtas never thought to protect Irish public funds in the same way.

    https://www.gov.ie/en/press-release/c329d-minister-of-state-browne-welcomes-passage-of-legislation-to-help-combat-money-laundering-and-tackle-white-collar-crime/

There is a long and disgraceful history. Rody Molloy could teach those RTÉ women how to ride out a scandal with the help of a mighty pension.

Lads I can’t understand why anyone is surprised by what’s being unearthed from the silos of Montrosia.

Theres lads and lassies who ‘got in’ and thought they had arrived into the ‘ chocolate factory’ and proceeded to ‘bathe their feet’ as

everyone else seemed to be doing.

This ‘ligger’ mentality is endemic in the place and goes far beyond senior management. Make no mistake about that.

Lot of bull being spaffed out about low paid workers, there’s nobody working in the Pink Palace on less than other comparable industries.

Let’s put that one to bed kinda rapid, otherwise hoy up the comparisons so John. Q can have a gander???

    Gow an ouda datt…..

  • Registered Users Posts: 984 ✭✭✭Hyperbollix

Indeed and it's why I won't listen to this bullshít argument that Tubridy "did nothing wrong" or "is a tiny story in a much bigger picture of corruption that was RTE"...... I have great time for Eamon Dunphy but he's been trying to pull that one consistently since Tubs and RTE parted ways.

There is no difference between the Breda O' Keefe's sham redundancy package or Ryan Tubridy's "Renault" top ups. It all comes from the one culture of corruption where a select few decided they would enrich themselves and their well heeled buddies from the public purse, while the ship was slowly sinking beneath the waves.

@Caquas would Rory C's exit not be viewed as a dismal one that protentional could have resulted in an unfair dismal case?

Also same for Paula Mulooly, did she just leave or was she pushed? resulting in a similar deal as to that of Rory?

It would be a very bold move for the WRC to declare that an Oireachtas Committee had caused the constructive dismissal of a public employee who would then be entitled to compensation from his employer. The Oireachtas could legislate an uppity WRC out of existence.

I wouldn’t be surprised if RTÉ wanted to pay Coveney off. The bad news for them is that public bodies can’t shower money on themselves to solve personnel problems.

Or was it to buy his silence? If so, he’s kept his side of the bargain but for how much longer?
