Snooker Season 2023/24

This new Saudi deal is huge for snooker.

£2m prize pot each year for 10 years. Second only to the World Championship and WST considering it as a 4th major. Probably close to half a mill for the winner.

So that seems to be the end for the Triple Crown, and this ranker will probably be seen as the number 2 tournament once it gets off the ground in late summer. Certainly the players will be very happy to go deep in this earner.

it'll be interesting to see the format, if it's a load of best of 7 matches, I don't see how it can be considered a "major"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,518 ✭✭✭✭ArmaniJeanss

For the mega money at stake I'd expect a longer format.

Maybe something like the UK - Top 16 straight into the Last 32 in Saudi Arabia with the rest of the players playing qualifiers in the UK for the 16 unseeded slots. Best of 11 for the main draw in Saudi Arabia.

    *****

As a random aside the Saudi's have also signed a contract to run a 9-Ball Pool tournament in conjunction with Matchroom with $1M prizemoney - whilst obviously less than half the snooker pot it's a massive bump for Pool, by some distance their biggest prize-pot as $250K with $40K to the winner has been the standard for the last few years.

“The Triple Crown” is a load of nonsense anyway.

You’d respect him more if he talked other players down, withdrew from tournaments at the last minute and generally acted like a spoiled child?

Murphy is polite and has a huge amount of respect for the game, mostly. So people hate him. It’s ridiculous

Ronnie won't be missing that one...enough to cure any snooker fatigue.

    Fantastic win for Aaron there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,483 ✭✭✭Arthur Daley

That was a really good win for Aaron Hill. And a decent chance against Fan Zhengyi to get into the quarter final

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,220 ✭✭✭waynescales1

He's playing for a place in the last 16.

Be nice if he could put another run of 3-4 wins in a row together like he did a few months ago.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,483 ✭✭✭Arthur Daley

Right. Still in the last 16 it would be one of two players outside the top 50 (Emery or Slessor) so always the chance to get far in one of these home nations events.

That was some break by Brecel to beat Dott. Check it out on Youtube if you didn't see it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,940 ✭✭✭✭gormdubhgorm

Jayus, even after reading your post I was still expecting him to break down on about 7/8 of those shots. The long blue and second last red Brecel potted were great shots. Looked very casual as he did it as well. It was a horrible table he started with.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Higgins struggling to grind it out against Selt. Switched it off when Selt was 3-1 up and Higgins was in bits. Turned it back on at 3-3.

Higgins not playing well. Just took about 7mins to make 34. Wrong side of the blue 3 times.

While Aaron didn't make the last 16, it looks like he will be, for the first time in his career, in the top 64. He is provisionally at 64 and as long as Martin O'Donnell doesn't reach the final of the Welsh Open he should stay there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,147 ✭✭✭✭loyatemu

I haven't been watching this - is Brecel finding some form finally?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,518 ✭✭✭✭ArmaniJeanss

He looked impressive yesterday in his two victories. Has a soft path to the final here with all the other remaining big names on the opposite side of the draw.

Pretty much admitted in interview afterwards that he did nothing from May to December and has only got back practising (after some frenzied panic from his team and father) since the UK Open. So I guess we'll see if he has turned a corner as would be good if he was in decent form for Sheffield. Though his style of play always leaves him vulnerable to a heavy defeat regardless.

Tough match up first today Allen v Higgins.

You'd have to think its between these two and Luca to win Sunday, but Gary Wilson can be a bit of a Home Nations specialist.

    Good start from Higgins

Higgins looked far more composed after the interval. Won easily in the end. Allen wasn’t at the races at all.

Dale doesn't look to have the greatest temperament

Delighted for O Donnell he played really well, I was convinced he was gone at the end though getting very twitchy but overall he definitely deserved it.

Martin O'Donnell beat Brecel last night so in the semis!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,066 ✭✭✭Genghis

Yep, seen most of the match, Luca might be on his way back but O'Donnell was never out-played, he did really well and I wouldn't be surprised if he made the final now. Could be agony for Aaron, top 64 but only provisionally.

This MOD v Slesser match is a slow burner. No big surprise there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,489 ✭✭✭AllForIt

Fancy Slessor for this now that he has drawn level. O'Donnell giving off vibes of loosing it a bit under pressure.

  • Registered Users Posts: 811 ✭✭✭jams100

But, isn't there a China event he's in and the world's qualifiers so he should really hold onto it, no? (Even if he provisionally falls out).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,483 ✭✭✭Arthur Daley

Well Ministry of Defence is in the final now.

Hill will play in China, the World Open ranker, before Sheffield.

But if he wins his opening match there he is likely to run into Ronnie

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,138 ✭✭✭Sandor Clegane

Wilson on fire here, could of had two 147's.

Higgins hasn't had a look in so far, 3-0 down already.

Yes, correct - I think Aaron is very well placed to get into the top 64, and hold his tour card that way (if not via the one year route) by end of season.

I had posted mid week that it looked like Aaron had, for the first time ever, officially broke into the top 64. That would be a big milestone for him.

This was on the basis MOD was the only player left in the top 16 who could get ahead of him, and to do that MOD would have to reach the Welsh Open final.

That seemed a remote chance 2 days ago, a measure of how well he has done.

Coming closer to the day where a player does back to back maximums, standard is so high these days.

Next maximum is the 200th officially recognised

Seems to be a lot of 147s nowadays . Is it the standard is so high or the tables playing easy . Maybe a bit of both ?. Even Wilson’s last red tonight never looked in but somehow landed in pocket .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,066 ✭✭✭Genghis

Another dimension to MODs unexpected run in Wales. Whether he wins or not completely changes the draw for this week's Players Championship, knocking Yuelong out, and changing the lineup and schedule in Telford.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,504 ✭✭✭✭mickdw

Years back, the pockets wouldn't accept any contact on near jaw or any touch of the cushion before the pocket if playing along or near a cushion. Now things are different. They don't appear to have altered pocket width but possibly the contouring of the actual hole has changed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,483 ✭✭✭Arthur Daley

Or maybe sometimes it seems the cushions an inch out from the pocket are a bit dead, not as springy and it helps a slow ball roll in.

Certainly the line from journalists around the tour is that the pocket template hasn't changed for years.

There have been 10 maximums this season so far. 200 overall. So at that rate for an average season it would take 20 years to achieve 200.

It has taken just over 40 years to reach 200. But since the Hearn takeover there are probably twice as many frames played on tour, compared to the 80s, 90s and 2000s.

People forget there are 17 ranking events this season. Back in the mid 80s boom there were 6 ranking events, and many of those were new (Rothmans Grand Prix, Mercantile Credit Classic, Dulux British Open). In the early 80s even fewer opportunities.

Plus, let's face it, the standard is better.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,304 ✭✭✭tomhammer..

An awful lot of high breaks these days. I won't go there about the easy tables😁 in fact i will

It's very noticeable how many balls are bouncing off the pockets and then dropping

Handy money today on Wilson if you were a betting man

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,483 ✭✭✭Arthur Daley

Deary me that was basic stuff for O'Donnell. Drop the red in over the pocket, get up to the blue, lots of reds in the open. A settler at the start of the final

Instead he drags it and doesn't get on the black properly. Break of 1

More than the usual 'glass of water'

Dreary enough affair so far, Wilson is cruising along like a canal barge. It's so slow that a runaway result for Wilson could still take all night.

It's up there with Griffiths v Thorburn 😁
