Vodafone Ireland regularly deducting 1.99 for data use.

Ok, for the context - I live in the UK, and have a phone with both Vodafone Ireland and Vodafone UK sims. Both are PAYG

On the rare occasions I text, I use the Irish number for texting because using using the UK number incurs a £1 charge (though subsequent calls and texts are free for the day, it's usually not worth it).

As a result, 10E credit on my irish number would last for months and months.

Recently though, the credit drains quite quickly, and looking through my 'Detailed usage history' on the website, it's almost all due to charges of E1.99 for mobile internet data. These are on usually dates that I'm in the UK, and the amounts of data are tiny (2.4kb, 1.9kb), so I really have no idea how that is happening.

One was recorded as happening at 3.44am on December 26th 2023 - when I was in Ireland, but I can assure you I was deep in a drunken sleep at that time.

The irish ones seem to happen when I'm at my mother's house where her wifi is awful. In fact, in general, both for the UK and Ireland, the charges seem to happen when I'm connecting to wifi or when wifi momentarily drops.

Can anybody suggest what might be happening here, and how to resolve it?

If the WiFi drops, the phone will switch to data, and any single bit of data (say the phone checking whether it's up-to-date) will trigger the charge. Why not just disable data completely?

Data is generally off, so when I'm not on wifi, the phone is offline. If I go for a walk or whatever, it doesn't trigger any switch to data - I'm just offline.

It seems to be a connection to wifi (maybe connecting to new wifi) that does it.

Roaming is off, not that I'm sure that is relevant here.

2G connection is on (and always has been I guess) but again, I'm not sure whether that's relevant.

Something started triggering the momentary use of data about 6 months ago that previously was not there.

Best not to leave any credit on a low use VF PAYG account.

If it's only for texting, use webtext instead and only top up to keep SIM active (€5 every 8 months).

I had the same issue a while ago. Make sure mobile data is off. If it happens again, just take it to a Vodafone store and explain the situation, and they should be able to sort it out.

Switching off data is usually not enough. Apps still use background data. You need to find the setting to turn off background data. It's possible that Data Saver is the setting you're looking for but it's been a while since I looked at it.

"amounts of data are tiny (2.4kb, 1.9kb)"

The PAYG 5G Data Unlimited plan is linked to Advantage Plus 3 tariff that has a data rate of €0.0021609 per MB at home.

AFAIK the daily €1.99 charge is not applied so any small data use charge will be almost unnoticeable.

Other option is to delete the APN which should stop any mobile data traffic.

    I have done this now.

I've also gone through the instances of mobile data use (that I didn't choose to do), and it really does seem to be connected to wifi connections. I can see that one happened when I just arrived at a UK airport and would have been taking my phone out of airplane mode and connecting to the airport wifi.

I'm certain that I wouldn't have been using my Vodafone Ireland data at that moment, but it connected for an instant I guess (2.3kb).

Hopefully turning data saver on (along with having mobile data already off) will do the trick.

What is strange is that these micro-connections were not an issue until a few months ago. Until then, my credit used to go on forever - I think I got texts saying that I basically had to buy some to keep the phone number active. I wonder what happened to my phone settings to cause the change.

Would you not simply call them and ask?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,785 ✭✭✭✭osarusan

I was onto them this morning, but all they are doing is looking at the same usage history I am.

I'm not really disputing their charges - I guess the phone did connect to mobile data when they said it did. For me the question is how to stop that from happening in the future.

I guess it's a phone settings issue rather than a Vodafone issue.

Assuming Android, Go into Developer Options and Disable "'mobile data always-on while on wifi'

That MAY help as sometimes WiFi drops (if the connection is not solid) and the phone will use a few KB of Mobile data and then switch back to WiFi, as far as i know

I had this issue too. Have 2 Sims in phone three and Vodafone. Have three set for data only.

Had no problems until seen 1.99 deducted few times from Vodafone which wasn't activated to use data.

Had to contact them and make them disable internet on account as use three for data.

It didn't happen before so only recently it could be a glitch on there side as phone shouldn't activate other SIM data when not enabled.

    Hey osarusan

Did you ever get this sorted? having the same issue the last 6 or so weeks. Disabling everything related to mobile data hasn't stopped it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,785 ✭✭✭✭osarusan

Hey, yeah - the only way they could stop it was to completely disable the internet on that SIM (it's dual SIM).

They refunded me either €5 or €10.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,959 ✭✭✭✭Jim_Hodge

Same has happened me for the past 6 weeks or so. I've everything turned off related to mobile data but still getting a €2 charge every day.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,959 ✭✭✭✭Jim_Hodge

@osarusan Could you still use wi fi at home on your phone when they did that?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,785 ✭✭✭✭osarusan

Yes, it doesn't affect wifi, and I can still use cellular data through the UK SIM. It was just the Irish SIM that was disabled in terms of data.

Interesting that this seems to be happening a bit more widely, after years of never happening at all, as far as I can see.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,785 ✭✭✭✭osarusan

If you go into the 'detailed usage history' on the vodafone site, you'll probably find that it's just a tiny amount of data at a point where your phone dropped wifi connection/tried to pick up wifi connection.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,959 ✭✭✭✭Jim_Hodge

I can see that but I don't want it to pick up anything other than my home WiFi. Surely Mobile Data turned off should mean no mobile data. This only started about 6 weeks ago and it's costing me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,785 ✭✭✭✭osarusan

Exactly the situation I was in. Everything that could be toggled off in terms of mobile data was turned off, but I was still getting these momentary connections.

Tbf, vodafone we good about it when I got in contact - they could see that 1 second of data usage at 3am wasn't likely from a user point of view, but from their perspective, it was the phone connecting to vodafone data, not vodafone connecting to the phone, so they said they could do nothing but completely disable the SIM.

Thanks for this thread, just looked and noticed 8 x 2.29e taken in the last three weeks. PAYG. Vodafone replied on chat 15e credit, I say its 20e and they apply 20e. Can't check back any further. Same thing 3am connecting

If deleting the APN in phone settings doesn't work then Vodafone must have some phantom APN operating in the background to connect data.

As mentioned above, since October, the charge for daily data is now 2.29. There's no incentive for them to fix the issue as many will not even notice.

Just speculating...is it possible that it's an android background time update that is doing it? Check settings for manual time instead of automatic or network time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,959 ✭✭✭✭Jim_Hodge

Have they said they can stop it happening again though?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,959 ✭✭✭✭Jim_Hodge

I've just had a call to Vodafone. It's a known issue which he hope's will be resolved in a few days. My account has been credited with all the charges to date. I had a choice of them restricting data on their end or leaving as is and calling again for a refund if charged any more in error. I opted for them restricting data, which can be reversed immediately any time I want by calling 1907. Only for this thread I'd have carried on wondering what I had done wrong with my phone to cause this. Thanks all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,785 ✭✭✭✭osarusan

Let us know if you hear that it gets resolved.

I'd prefer to have cellular data available (should I want it) on the Irish SIM, rather than being completely restricted.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,891 ✭✭✭Ten Pin

Does it happen in aeroplane mode?
If not then a temp fix might be to activate aeroplane mode at night (to block whatever happens at 3am). For dual SIM, turn off that SIM at night.
Even though it's a Vodafone problem, they might not bother fixing it. IMO a formal complaint is a good idea, at least then Comreg can investigate and push VF.
Mobile operators aren't famous for resolving issues such as this.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,959 ✭✭✭✭Jim_Hodge

You can rest assured that, while Vodafone admit they are aware of and are fixing a fault in their system, they won't systematically refund affected customers.

Glad I spotted this. I see there’s a €2.29 charge from earlier in the month. My mobile data is always off when I’m out of data allowance. I’ll give them a call.
It’s bad form that it’s able to bypass phone settings.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 98 ✭✭Orban6

Have the same issue. Rang support a few days ago and got 3 x 2.29 refunded. Checked my balance again today and another 2.29 deducted on the 23rd. My mobile data is always off. I think a call to Comreg is on the cards.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,959 ✭✭✭✭Jim_Hodge

see my post #24. They are aware and you can get further refunds or have them restrict data in the meantime. Call 1907 again.

Couldn't get a human today. Will try again tomorrow. I think Comreg need to be informed. A lot of people may not be aware that they are being charged wrongly.

I am getting the same issue. But on a single SIM.

I changed from a Samsung S4 to a Samsung S24 Ultra 3 months ago and these charges have been happening ever since.
So basically this is a rundown of the issue from what I have read in Boards.ie so far:

Even though if your data is switched off and all your apps are set to WIFI use only, there is a phantom Vodafone process (or some other process) using data that triggers the upfront Vodafone fee of €2.29 plus any data this process uses from your balance (which is only a few kilobytes so should be 1/1000 of a cent).

And this process uses your data and is triggered regardless of any settings on your phone. Dodgy carry on indeed.

It seems that regardless of which process is using the data, I have been moved from the top plan in the diagram below to the bottom plan since I changed my SIM for the new phone.

So Vodafone always charge the €2.29 up front when you use ANY data on a particular day. Even if the data amount being used is tiny.

We also have to figure out what that phantom process is and why it is ignoring my phone settings.

That top PAYG plan above is the one I seemed to be on before I got a new SIM for my new phone. My old PAYG plan on my old phone never charged the €2.29 up front for data. So its possible the phantom process was running then but only deducted 1/1000 of a cent on my old phone because the €2.29 didn't apply.

Something is not right here and ComReg probably needs to take a look at it.

The fact that an application is using data even though data is switched off does not sit right.

This strikes me as an issue with the phone, rather than with vodafone? I would have thought that it is the phone momentarily switching on data, and then the phone just connects to vodafone for an instant.

Unless it's plausible that vodafone has some process that can override a phone's 'mobile data switched off' setting? How could they do that? I have no Vodafone app on my phone either.

Perhaps what Vodafone could do is raise the amount of data used to trigger the charge, to avoid people being deducted E2.29 for just a few bytes of use.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,959 ✭✭✭✭Jim_Hodge

The issue has been confirmed by Vodafone as being on their end. You'll see earlier in the thread that they are working on a fix and will refund without hesitation for any charges to date as a result of the issue.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,785 ✭✭✭✭osarusan

Yeah, they refunded me as well.

I'm just wondering how it can be an issue at their end, and what process could override a 'mobile data off' setting…how can they force a phone to connect for an instant to trigger the 1.99/2.29 charge.

if we found out what the process is that is wrongly taking data we could switch it off or uninstall it.

We need to get that info from Vodafone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,959 ✭✭✭✭Jim_Hodge

The whole point was that it's solely on Vodafone's side. You can't turn it off. They have to do it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,398 ✭✭✭10000maniacs

I was on to them this morning. I finally managed to get somebody who wasn't the AI Toby guy.

He refunded me all the €2.29's since I changed my phone.

He said he couldn't switch off my data use for this phantom app from their end but apparently they know about the issue and are working frantically to fix it.

But any more €2.29's deductions that happen, I can be refunded for these in the future too if I call 1907.

Same here. Took some "change" from my partner account.

Can you go from tobi bot to chat with normal person?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,959 ✭✭✭✭Jim_Hodge

I just kept talking over it saying 'I want to talk to a human' and 20 seconds later I was talking to an agent.

I see making a complain also connects you with human:) But they are already close today.

    Cheers

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,184 ✭✭✭loki7777

They gave me €10 refund, didn't bother about the rest. Switched off(changed server address as you can't switch it off completely) vodafone APN.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,855 ✭✭✭✭Flinty997

    How did you contact them?

I had a spare SIM in an old Android phone. There's no apps or any accounts setup or installed. Updated the credit, and noticed the next day the system lhad started to do updates and charged for data so turned it physically off. Turned it back on today and all the credit I added is gone.

When I had a windows phone you could turn off data and the credit didn't evaporate with automatic updates. It's a dumb android feature.

In this case though I don't think it's a phone setting. But a bug in their billing system. Because it kept taking credit with the phone off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,398 ✭✭✭10000maniacs

Call 1907 and if you keep repeating that you want to talk to a human, the Toby bot will hand you over to a human.

Explain that your credit is being inexplicabally depleted and you will be recredited with all the spurious €2.29's that have been deducted.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,184 ✭✭✭loki7777

Chat in app. Same thing as with 3 few years back or so.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,855 ✭✭✭✭Flinty997

3 made it impossible to stay prepaid. I switched to bill pay on those cheap deals after 3 changes.

I have a spare Vodafone SIM because it handy to test coverage and roaming, and if a deal comes up on another network.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,184 ✭✭✭loki7777

I'm still with 3. Account valid 6 months, no data add-ons etc. Using roamless now for data, three just to keep the number as have access to wifi almost all the time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,855 ✭✭✭✭Flinty997

I used to do that but my credit just melted away on 3. Had to move away.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 81 ✭✭Rewired

Am having exactly the same problem on Vodafone prepaid!

Balance is being slowly wiped out by data charges (I have mobile data disabled) and also a text message I never sent. Google search for the number shows other people being charged for messages they never sent to the same number.

Got onto support and got some data free of charge, but the support person didn't seem aware of either issue.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,959 ✭✭✭✭Jim_Hodge

That's not a result. Get back to them and insist on a refund, as they said it's a known issue on their side. FOC data is no answer if you have data disabled.
