I thought he'd get more. The guy importing garlic got 6 years. I know everyone brings that one up! Was any of the money recovered I wonder?

Can you please jail Martin Nolan?

It's amazing the sentences he gives out for robbing his wealthy friends and the slaps on the wrist he gives to actual rapists and murderers.

Has anyone checked Nolan's hard drives?

I think, had he stood trial in 2010/2011, the sentence would have been a lot harsher. It was different times. And I think this played in his head when he refused extradition - he probably thought he'd be a poster boy for the recession and get at least 10 years.

That said, you'd have to say the sentence would have been longer if he hadn't spent time in a Brazilian jail.

I wonder if he's thinking that if he had only come home five years ago, he'd be out of jail now. His decision making seems to be...not the best.

I definitely wouldn't fancy spending time in any Brazilian prison, but I'd be curious to know what his one was like.

I'm sure some are worse than others and of course his defense are going to play it up like the hell hole we all imagine.

Thomas Byrne got 16 years with the last 4 suspended for very a similar crime. That was in 2013.

I can see this sentence being appealed. Nolan is playing silly beggars like Paul Carney used to, purposely ignoring sentencing precedent only to have it overturned on appeal.

He was given credit for the time he spent in prison in Brazil.

If he didn't fight extradition he wouldn't have been in that "hellhole".

So being in prison in Brazil was his own fault so why should an Irish Judge give him credit for that.

I disagree. An ordinary Joe may have convinced the jury better.

It will be interesting how the next part dealing with confiscation of assets.

I wouldn't be surprised if they located all accounts and properties - gardai are actually quite good in this area.

From what I've read, the value will exceed what he took due to the growth in prices.

Unfortunately that's the system and far too many people game it. Ideally the fees should be a charge against you and stay against you for life.

Latest is reports of money laundering. This may see further charges.

How on earth was he able to get multiple mortgages on the same properties?, did the banks not check if there was an existing mortgage on a property before giving out a mortgage?

The judge had no choice in the matter. Ireland doesn't have an extradition treaty with Brazil. The extradition had to be negotiated with the Brazilian authorities. One of the conditions of the extradition was that of he was convicted and sentenced, that his time in prison in Brazil would be offset against his sentence in Ireland.

all €1.6m was paid back. The company he operated was a decent size and was able to pay back including penalties & interest at 33k a month (news report).

He appealed and the appeal judges said that the sentence applied which was the max permissible (5 years + 1 year on another count to run consecutively) was unduly harsh and did not give any credit for the admission, the positive manner in which he dealt with customs and the fact that a payment plan to reimburse the money in full had not been taken into account. It was reduced to 2 years.

Lynn on the other hand has tried to evade anything and everything, but doesn't understand that the people at the top of the garda investigation unit that are now on this case are very good at what they do and bit by bit they will unravel things. Don't be surprised if there's a fairly substantial additional criminal case coming.

is this a joke? He got a light sentence for a very serious crime and I'd hate to see how much this whole thing cost

At this stage, and more realistically for a long time, a “poster boy”- in my view. Probably worse in some respects.

Aka- “a token gesture” (or jester as boards text suggested)

all words at this stage - an awful lot of lives, families, marriages, relationships and other - destroyed, over that time.

It’s sad - there’s no “closure” here. I’m sure some young bucks here on boards see it as “history”, and in the way of the world, that’s how they should see it at this point.

Hopefully they’ll see something that they can take away and bring forward to “today”- and indeed, tomorrow.

Technically he robbed a bank. Or several institutions.

He would have got less if he indulged in armed robberies.
