Absolutely Cavan have improved a lot in recent years. I still saw this as a winnable game though seeing that we were at home. It was a game we had to win but we didn't. This defeat very much plunges Cork football into crises now. We made a decent bit of progress last year, but so far we've gone way backwards on that.

We'd be barely any better than Kilkenny with regards to football if we did that.

To be honest we have been going nowhere since 2014. Going backwards when making progress. Terrible setup and very hard to follow them when they are this inconsistent. I think we must go down to division 3 and Tailteann cup for something to change with Cork football.

We never recovered from Brian Cuthbert getting the job. The first thing he did was clear out a lot of the senior players. That created a leadership vacuum, and we've spent the past decade just aimlessly drifting in mediocrity. At least the hurlers won a few Munsters and have shown some flicker of life at times over the past ten years.

Every county bar maybe Galway focus on one code. And look at cost for them is beyond extreme.

The days of trying be successful at both are long gone.

We can't get it right in football and if honest just wasting time with a sport we never be successful again at bar odd fluke now.

Cork county board have no money. Unless a JP goes in its going get worse unless rugby becomes as big for Pairc.

We are producing hurlers just need toughen them up. We haven't produced a quality footballer in county in 16-17 years now.

Cork footballers deserves the pathetic support it gets if honest. We could barely get 500 to limerick few years ago to take on mayo who brought down 15000.

People need look at bigger picture here. Cork gaa is on as bad state as FAI are now. Actually worse.

We can either get some success in one code or nothing in both.

The Supervalu Stade De Frank stadium debt is a serious financial millstone on the county now. The way i see it we always need to aim to have both senior teams, up and about and firing on all cylinders. As with regards to football we won't be winning a senior football all Ireland until 2034/2035 at the earliest imo.

How exactly does defunding the footballers help Cork get closer to winning All Ireland hurling? What does the senior hurling setup lack that they would get by defunding the footballers?

  • Registered Users Posts: 34,394 ✭✭✭✭The_Kew_Tour

    It sure is.

I would love see success in both but sad fact is unless we see success its going get worse.

Cork football is simply not producing. Serious structure problems when you cant produce one footballer since mid 00s of any class.

Are we just going throw money away at something we seriously have not any success or produced with?

If your in business do you keep investing in something that fails year on year? It's same in sport.

I said it last year and got slated by same few who got carried away with couple wins but we are back sqaure one. In fact if anything got worse.

And it won't hurt cork gaa cause its already failed with millions pumped in.

Cork GAA needs act like business and produce like one. Ya don't keep investing in failure.

  • Registered Users Posts: 34,394 ✭✭✭✭The_Kew_Tour

It doesn't. In fact no guarnteee of anything.

Cork gaa is in huge debt right now. If a jp springs than we won't have worry.

But we are producing hurlers but tweaks of course need be made. Hurling has failed too but we failing at the top..

Cork football is failing against the middle teams with huge money pumped into failure. Big difference.

I be saying same about hurling if we were losing to the Laois, westmeath and kerrys of this world.

So you want to defund the footballers to pay back the stadium debt sooner basically?

  • Registered Users Posts: 34,394 ✭✭✭✭The_Kew_Tour

Would not see it like that at all. In fact I say opposite had we delivered anything in football of note recently.

Cork needs all irelands and sooner the better..every year that goes by it gets tougher

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,456 ✭✭✭FastFullBack

Right but I'm just trying to understand why you want to defund the footballers?

And what benefits it would bring?

You've said it wouldn't directly benefit the hurlers and your motivation isn't to pay back the debt faster.

    So what is it?

Cork football in a pityful state, Minor and u21 champs in 2019, they should be doing much better right now. Meath and fermanagh must win games, playing armagh on the last day may be advantageous if they have gone up already but it's going to be tough from here on in. Cork football at senior level just never revived itself after Counihan leaving, it's been jeckll and hyde since.

Is pairc ui rhinn just used now for club and pre season competitions? Is this a club ground?

Cork beat Kerry in 2020 and then get beaten well by a division 4 team in the Munster final. We couldn't even win that. I wouldn't ever again go to see the Cork Senior footballers playing in anything. They would break your heart. At least the hurlers usually are competitive even if they are beaten.

Cork were in Division 3 in 2020, which they won with 7 wins out of 7. But of course in 2019 they were relegated from Division 2. If it is any consolation, in 2020 Derry failed to get promotion from Division 3. And up until a couple of years ago they were no hopers in Ulster with no title since 1998. Things can change.

Give ot to clubs, anything. Ladies teams even.

5 years ago in 2019 a publication was put out for Cork football to be competing with big guns by 2024.

Well here we are. Pure waste and money have been better spent elsewhere

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,712 ✭✭✭Seadin

I can guarantee you that won't happen in Cork.

The Kew tours comments are regular arguments in most duel counties, up here we get it all the time

My opinion is if you put the right structure in place then it shouldn't matter who gets more money, why is the likes of Conor counihan , Larry Tompkins even billy Morgan headed of the football development?...is there an actual football development

To be fair initially we had to do this to get a level playing field against the hurling when Fitz was in charge and it worked, bringing in ex intercounty players at all levels of coaching with the development team teams from u14 up and it does seem to work

I can't see a good structure in cork football, at club level is excellent but its not translated to intercounty at all that is the main issue,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,456 ✭✭✭FastFullBack

So with your rational we should only fund teams that are somewhat competitive and have a reasonable chance of AI success.

What would happen in 5 years if we started to drop in hurling and struggled to be competitive and couldn't ever get out of Munster.

Do we stop funding that also and just pack it up altogether as a county with Senior AI teams?

Poor Billy is approaching his 80s. If we have rely on Billy we truly are fucked.

Your right if right structures are put in place they should get money. That's the total opposite to what cork are doing and have done.

The funny thing is that in the 2019-present time frame referenced for the football, we’ve achieved nothing of note in the hurling too. The odd impressive win but mainly mediocrity.

Probably only the 3rd best team in Munster over that span, even if you want to get a pass based on Limerick’s dominance who we got embarrassed by when we did fluke an All Ireland final.

Believe it’s 1 all star in 5 years. Honestly feels like 6/7 years since lads like Coleman and Fitzgibbon came through that I thought we are developing top class hurlers.

Go back to those years 2017 & 2018 where we had really good opportunities to win it out and didn’t. Particularly 2018 where we did show up in the semi and had a 6 point lead towards the end. 2013 was a bit lucky in terms of that team’s capabilities but couldn’t complete a snatch and grab.

The hurler’s underachievements are overshadowed by the footballer’s performances so get off lightly. It’s funny that the last all Ireland was in football though.

I genuinely think the size of the county in terms of clubs and players has not been used in an advantageous way for a while now and has probably contributed to complacency. Also during a time over the last decade or two where inter county has become less and less amateur while Cork have generally become less competitive. Cork were ahead of the curve at certain stages like the hurlers in the early-to-mid 2000s but we just seem to have fallen behind.

Really poor conversion of underage success to senior. There generally seems to be a dearth of top players coming through. Poor tactics, particularly in football where I’d argue it has a bigger impact. Agree that the financial situation doesn’t help but it’s not an excuse that wipes away poor management of the resources that are made available.

I truly hope I’m wrong and it’s all just an underwhelming cycle which corrects itself but it’s felt like Cork has been pottering along for quite a while now with the same hope.

If they don't win this we can say goodbye to our hopes for this year.

Robbie O'Flynn will be out for another 4 or 5 weeks with his hamstring. Darragh Fitzgibbon has yet another shoulder tweak so he is out for sunday too.

Ben Cunningham has a hamstring injury too but its felt he will come back just for the end of the league. Sounds like he can train but not match fit yet. Really wanted to see him more in the league but hopefully he will play a few before Championship.

Damien and Conor Cahalane are both training away so will be available for Sunday.

Not at all the main thing is that we beat them in the championship! We could do with a win for the confidence alright though.
