I leave my VPN enabled full time.

I checked speed just now on my 1Gb/s down; 100Mb/s up FTTH connection.

    I use Proton VPN.

At this time I do not have an illicit stream provider but if I did, I doubt there would be much chance of seeing a pattern to my use which could be used in a court of law. I do not see any benefit in just turning on the VPN for particular use and leaving it off for the majority of time.

Having read the majority of posts in this thread I have the impression that it has become difficult for a newcomer to find a reliable, vouched for, provider of such service, as the providers wish to remain 'generally' anonymous for legal reasons.

How could someone who had an interest in such a service be able to choose the better provider for them? It seems to me that it is a matter of taking a chance on stumbling on a reliable provider. Do I misunderstand the situation?

The only issues I see with VPNs are different sites having trouble loading up when they detect a VPN. Facebook being one.

I generally use the VPN fulltime on my torrent laptop and Firestick but that would be it. I have an independent laptop for torrenting.

I have noticed lately that some of the channels on my IPTV will only load when the VPN is on but others will work fine.

    @Johnboy1951

You've ftth, if you'd a VDSL or mobile connection at 10 or 15mbps and the VPN slowing it again you wouldn't have enabled all the time I'd say. Most people are only using them to get around geoblocking, set to UK & Ireland won't work etc. Easier to toggle when needed

Yeah it's a going to be trial and error, sign up for a month or so first see what it's like. Your into sat & tech should know of some sites anyway where it's discussed/sold. Or there's a lad in every pub in Ireland who you could ask

..im only testing web based services at the moment, as in services that have web sites, some good, some terrible, i cant see the difference with sharing my data with these criminals and other 'services' including google and co.......

    Do I misunderstand the situation?

    Nope. Pretty much spot on.

I was addressing the situation more from a newcomer not deeply involved in tech.

Although TBH even I would have difficulty separating the wheat from the chaff as I have never looked into this previously.

  • in my own experience always-on VPN (Norton) has not slowed in a significant way when loading sites. Try using TOR over to the dark web and you get sloooooooooooow 😁

They'll still get them in the pub or wherever through word of mouth.

I guess that's how the largest chuck of the use base is getting them anyway, then from Facebook/online ads. Buying the devices from them too. Smallest subset searching out their own provider & setting up themselves.

ISP's are definitely throttling bandwidth during the PL games, another reason to use a VPN.

Nord VPN comes included in Revolut premium so if your looking at buying one have a free revolut, worth considering.

What difference would a VPN make if they were throttling everyone's bandwidth?

Or are you suggesting they are throttling individual peoples connections because they are detecting streaming?

    Which ISPs are doing this?

Certainly not the last 3 I have been with. Or anyone else I know of.

I don't think that I'd have his patience in reviewing the latest mobile phones or tablets. :)

Yes thats true for some reason hes seen as really techie, I don't find him that way at all, mainstream techie I guess, has he a technical background I wonder

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,410 ✭✭✭jmcc

Like most technology journalists in the non-specialist media, he doesn't seem to have a technical background. He did train as a solicitor, I think, so he may understand the legislation on the dodgy box issue.

I experienced a situation a while back for which a particular sports channel was constantly buffering during live games and doing so over the duration of a couple of weeks. Enabled the VPN on the device and buffering had stopped - disabled the VPN and buffering continued. Enabled the VPN again and buffering had stopped. Internet speed check revealed no change or attenuation on the ISP supply download speed during this time (950Mbps). VPN download speed was at 80-100Mbps.

There maybe multiple reasons for this but It appeared as if the channel or the specific app connection was being throttled. By enabling the VPN the issue was resolved immediately.

In fairness I think these are very isolated and rare occurrences but I am open to correction on this.

sure weckler won’t get out of bed to review anything less than a samsung or apple… Ireland the land of two tech writers Jess and Adrian.

  • Registered Users Posts: 40,099 ✭✭✭✭Boggles

That would be nothing to do with the ISP.

Although it would be interesting to know if Sky which I have never used incorporates any agitation practices for their internet service.

I'd say they were throttling traffic from the source ip, not the whole connection. There are court orders now forcing them to block all traffic from certain ips, hence the proliferation of vpns

  • Registered Users Posts: 819 ✭✭✭alzer100

Agreed, the ISP would not attenuate the overall connection.

The FACT website is worth a look. It's run by retired UK police officers.

Ireland is a very small market by comparison to the UK, so I'd expect very little enforcement here.

The only people who'll get done here are those who live here and advertise illegal IPTV services on adverts, donedeal, Facebook marketplace etc.

🤫 I noticed on the bottom right of the FRONT page of the Evening Herald today, they are pushing an article claiming that Gardai are clamping down on illegal Firesticks...

  • Registered Users Posts: 18,095 ✭✭✭✭rob316

You cant stop piracy, its like whack a mole. Film and music industry found that out a long time ago.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,794 ✭✭✭DopeTech

Yeah the wording in these articles is hilarious. Illegal fire sticks! Someone should tell Jeff!

  • Registered Users Posts: 29,386 ✭✭✭✭Wanderer78

....or maybe jeffs actually fronting a lot of these servers!

In recent data commissioned by the BeStreamWise initiative, which aims to raise awareness of those risks, one in three people in Ireland who illegally stream say they, or someone they know, have been a victim of fraud, scams, or identity theft as a result. The poll was a sample of 1,000 nationally representative respondents by Dynata.

Since the enforcement operation began last year, FACT said more than 60 targets have been engaged with, "resulting in the vast majority of illegal services being taken down, impacting tens of thousands who would have watched the streams".

    Vast majority taken down? Hahaha

How can you possibly know you were a vicitim of fraud by watching an illegal stream? Im in the print consumable industry and its the same stuff HP peddle about using cartridges without non-hp chips "the chips are reprogramable so can record your data and can contain spyware"

I know Sky have been caught throttling IPTV.

They are talking about the online streams where it's click on 40 different things to watch the game type websites. Malware and scam central.

Also maybe they signed up to one of these IPTV services and then it disappeared.

I like Jess kelly, but you would be forgiven for thinking there are only 2 smart phone makers available in Ireland.
