You wouldn't be looking down on my viewpoint now would you?

Team is as per Thornley's prediction.

Frawley starts at 15 and there's a 6-2 bench split with Murray and McCloskey covering the backs.

Mod: No more unsubstantiated claims of drug use. That goes for everyone.

Jager over bealham is interesting. Presume he has a knock.

It is interesting that it seems like a completely seed-change in mentality with regards the 6/2 split. Personally would prefer someone with a bit more versatility in the 23 shirt if we go down that road.

Henshaw must be covering fullback. Problem with Mcloskey on the bench is he can only cover 12. I was hoping Ringrose was fit because he can cover wing as well and one of the wingers could cover fullback.

Hopefully not. Bealham has excellent but I can understand Farrell wanting to take a proper look at Jager in a test match. I don't think we've really had a proper look at him in the Northern hemisphere yet.

Agreed - Frawley is that player right now but he's starting so things are a bit thin in certain areas.

Longer term when Hansen and JOB are back available 6-2 becomes much more manageable as that gives several "multi-role" players as options..

Reading elsewhere that Bealhams partner had a baby in the last few weeks , so he's probably getting some deserved time at home as well as getting a chance to look at Jager.

Jager's move back to Ireland has paid off already, in line for his first cap on Saturday.

I don't like this 6-2 split, less so when you're utility back is starting but when you do use it Murray is the obvious choice for the reserve scrum half.

I think Farrell's choice will have been biased by the players he wants to get on the pitch. Ryan, Baird, and Conan all deserve minutes based on their performances. McCloskey too. Our 6N squad isn't exactly deep with fully fit utility backs.

I think 6-2 only works when one of the players on the bench is a "multi-purpose" back - Like Frawley or JOB for example (or Wille Le Roux for SA) , players who can reasonably cover at least 3 positions in the backline.

A bench with 2 specialist backs is risky and requires multiple positional changes for anything other than their specific positions.

Can't say I'm massively enthused by the bench. Don't like a 6-2 at the best of times, but we are in line for some serious reshuffling in the backline in case of any injuries.

I'm quite nervous about the lack of cover in the backs but in fairness Farrells selections up to now have proved to be correct so will have to trust him on this one. Wales love an unstructured game , I think they are excellent on the counter so thought that would have come into Farrells thinking.

Oh, I completely agree. I don't think Farrell would make a selection like this against a stronger team. If Crowley takes a knock early on we've all kinds of readjustments to make.

Who will cover full back if frawley gets injured. I assume Nash with jgp to the wing?

Worst case Crowley takes a knock. Then you have two probable options:

Frawley to 10, Nash to 15, JGP to wing, Murray in at 9.

Frawley to 10, Henshaw to 15, Bundee to 13, McCloskey in at 12.

That would appear to be about the only option in that scenario - Similar if Crowley gets injured.

Frawley to 10 , Nash to 15 , JGP to wing and Murray on.

    Just way too messy IMO.

looks like a selection with no regard to the opposition, as in, this is how we're going to approach the game, first half / second half. How we want to start and how we want to end. Might also deliberately be creating some chaos or "adversity" for tougher challenges.

could we see JGP end up on the wing if we get a back 3 injury?

Farrell did seem to enjoy watching the team deal with a triple-prop front row and an openside flanker throwing darts last year. Maybe he does want a bit more chaos for the lads to deal with.

Any injury to any back other than one of the centres results in JGP going to the wing I think.

Frawley Injured - Nash to 15 , JGP to wing , Murray on

Lowe/Nash injured - JGP to wing , Murray on

    Aki/Henshaw injured - McCloskey on

Crowley Injured - Frawley to 10 , Nash to 15 JGP to Wing , Murray on

5-3 with Larmour on bench is a much more flexible set-up.

No matter how much one of Baird/Ryan/Conan deserve game time and they do , but horses for courses.

If McCloskey comes on he really needs to play 12. Switching Bundee to 13 mightn't be ideal but at least he played almost 50 pro games there when he was younger.

Jordan Larmour in particular should be disappointed by this call. Picking him at 23 would eased most of the problems.

I'd worry about Frawley at FB. He has very little game time there and from what I've seen is vulnerable under the high ball.

We know what the welsh gameplan will be now. He has never looked like nailing down a position at Leinster. Would have preferred Daly, think he is a safer option. Hopefully he goes well as options were limited with JOB and Hansen out. The young fella up at Ulster looked decent when he played there, forget his name. He also plays in the centres.

Doesn't say much about our depth at tighthead if Jager, who was never within an ass's roar of the the NZ team, can rock up here an walk into the Ireland team within a few weeks.

  • Moderators, Politics Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 15,481 Mod ✭✭✭✭Quin_Dub

Except for you know , that time he was picked for the NZ Squad.

Also , he's been picked on the bench in a low risk game against a crap welsh team when the other guys are unavailable so it's hardly "walking into the team".

Have you ever posted something positive about Irish rugby?

  • Subscribers Posts: 41,585 ✭✭✭✭sydthebeat

well, he WAS within an asses roar of NZ when he was selected to play for an All Blacks XV against in Ireland in 2022. Injury ruled him out, and who knows where he'd be now if he had have played in that game.

anyway, im not too worried about trying out a guy who is vying for 3rd choice tight head. Hes up against Tom O Toole, not an insurmountable challenge.

anyway ireland depth at TH isnt great. Most sensible people can see that. its absolutely positive that we are trying another player there.

Jager will only be the second TH to make their test debut since John Ryan in 2016.

We're giving our 4th choice TH his first cap against a poor Wales team. Not unduly worried.

Jaeger has looked pretty good since he came over in all honesty. I didn't expect him to actually be that big.

Jager is well worth a closer inspection. He's a huge man which always gives you a fighting chance at prop and he looked decent in the couple of games I've seen him play for Munster. He's also 29 in the Summer so it's not like we want to wait around to cap him in an Autumn tour game.
