1/5 on when I looked at the start

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,090 ✭✭✭Genghis

Eurosport showed odds of 1/3 Wilson, 9/4 O'Donnell just before the first frame.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,304 ✭✭✭tomhammer..

This must be one of the worst finals in recent times

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,504 ✭✭✭Arthur Daley

It is a poor final alright.

Imagine if Ministry of Defence mounts a big comeback, you really would be into Thorburn/Charlton territory.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,304 ✭✭✭tomhammer..

Has it improved any , didn't bother turning it on

Was like watching paint dry today

It is a quaqmire at the moment anyway

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,304 ✭✭✭tomhammer..

Eurosport host said it was a very exciting first session😁

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,304 ✭✭✭tomhammer..

    "Marin O'Donnell is struggling"😁

If say everyone from the viewers to the ref is struggling with this

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 10,578 Mod ✭✭✭✭Andrew76

Baffling decision by O’Donnell not to go for the green direct, gives the frame away to go 8-4 down instead of 7-5. Madness.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,158 ✭✭✭Sandor Clegane

Bizarre shot selection alright, O Donnell hasn't really turned up yet he could still of only been 7-5 down.

And we are on to the next event, from 7pm tonight. Players Championshop, ITV4, first all rounds best of 11, except final (best of 19).

    Top Half

     Judd Trump (ENG) (1) - Chris Wakelin (ENG) (16) - Mon 19/02 7pm

     Tom Ford (ENG) (8) - Ali Carter (ENG) (9) - Tue 20/02 7pm

     Mark Williams (WAL) (5) - Mark Allen (NIR) (12) - Tue 20/02 1pm

     Gary Wilson (ENG) (4) - Hossein Vafaei (IRN) (13) - Tue 20/02 1pm

    Bottom Half

     Zhang Anda (CHN) (3) - Noppon Saengkham (THA) (14) - Wed 21/02 1pm

     Ding Junhui (CHN) (6) - John Higgins (SCO) (11) - Mon 19/02 7pm

     Barry Hawkins (ENG) (7) - Mark Selby (ENG) (10) - Wed 21/02 1pm

     Ronnie O'Sullivan (ENG) (2) - Zhou Yuelong (CHN) (15) - Tue 20/02 7pm

Some interesting ties there. O'Sullivan / Yuelong meet again for third time in 3 months. Both times before went to decide, both time O'Sullivan won. Not sure which matches will be televised in full, so probably a few good looking matches like Ding / Higgins or Anda / Saengkham will not be shown in full.

The seedings are interesting, based as they are on 'season rank'; Allen is surprisingly low (at 12), Carter also low (at 9); Anda and Wilson are higher that you might usually expect but are based on consistent results (and Wilsons two wins this season) they have had.

Almost as interesting is the five players from 2 year top 16 not inside the season top 16 - Robertson (#15), Millkins (#14), Wilson, K (#10), Murphy (#6) and of course, no World Champion (Brecel,#4).

I think with both fresh from a break, this may well come down to a final between O'Sullivan and Trump. That said, Robbie has a much harder route to the final on paper than Judd has.

ITV are now showing the second table on ITV X, with commentary.

Second table probably only has to run until Wednesday night/Thursday afternoon. And ITV X not generally available in ROI I don't think.

    It's non stop tournaments

No wonder ronnies taking a break

The travel and the mental fatigue and publicity

    Good match on here

I'm guessing this'll go to the decider

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,504 ✭✭✭Arthur Daley

Allen v G Wilson was no classic. 5 hours of battling and it didn't even go to 6-5 in the end.

    Selby up now for O'Sullivan

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,304 ✭✭✭tomhammer..

    Ya hard fought win

    Looking forward to this one

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,304 ✭✭✭tomhammer..

O'Sullivan smashes them and doesn't get away with it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,504 ✭✭✭Arthur Daley

Selby looking in the driving seat at this stage. Should be 3-0 from here

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,304 ✭✭✭tomhammer..

Ya Selby on his game this will be a tester for Ronnie

One of his few weaknesses is he sometimes throws in the towel

Finally someone who can actually punish Ronnie's mistakes, as good as Ronnie has been this season far too many people have left him off the hook in matches.

It may yet turn but so far at least Selby has punished him.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,158 ✭✭✭Sandor Clegane

Selby on his day is as impressive as anyone.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,304 ✭✭✭tomhammer..

    Looking like a jimmy whitewash

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,629 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

    Delighted Selby exposed Ronald.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,304 ✭✭✭tomhammer..

He exposed Ronnie for being a crap snooker player ?

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 21,820 Mod ✭✭✭✭Brian?

    Exposed him how exactly?

    Ronnie was absolutely brutal.

Oh aye, Ronnie finally been exposed has he? Knew all those trophies where just a smokescreen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,202 ✭✭✭✭The Nal

All those years of Ronnie pretending to be great.....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,959 ✭✭✭Bobson Dugnutt

Obviously the GOAT, but I find O’Sullivan to be a very tedious character at this stage.

    I get snooker fatigue.

It's same thing over and over again. I haven't watched the welsh or any of this so far.

  • Registered Users Posts: 55 ✭✭_Knight

Only player currently who I think is very possible to match 7 world titles.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,202 ✭✭✭✭The Nal

Depends when the eyes start to go. But yeah certainly possible if he wins another in the next couple of years

  • Registered Users Posts: 55 ✭✭_Knight

I don't think eyes start to go really. I think that was the excuse given years ago but I think it was more lack of practice.

Nowadays players are playing every week, it's like muscle memory at this stage.

There's a video of Fred Davis playing Alex Higgins in 1981 on Youtube...and for a 68 year old he's pretty damn good. He potted this green into the corner.

He seems to tailor his game around the Worlds these days - he tends to be quiet enough pre Christmas before finding his form in the run up to the Crucible. For all the talk of Ronnie and his 8th / Season Triple Crown, Selby could well be the man to beat in Sheffield - not many I would fancy beating him over multiple sessions if his game is on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,504 ✭✭✭Arthur Daley

Last night I thought back again to that brilliant day of snooker, the last day of the semi finals at the Crucible in August 2020.

Ronnie was in an absolute hole against Selby started firing balls all over the place to get out of it. Somehow overcame Selby 17-16.

That goes the other way and Ronnie is now on 7 World titles, Selby probably on 5.

And I can easily see Selby win another World title or two from here in his 40s.

Not suggesting Selby is in the top 2 or 3 players of all time, but he is in the top 5 or 6.

Toss up between him and Mark Williams for 5th

    1-4 is obvious enough

Yep. Then it's a conversation between Willow and Selby. Judd and Robbo too if they win a couple of worlds

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,024 ✭✭✭✭gormdubhgorm

Pity we will never know what standard Joe Davis was. I remember Steve Davis in one of those question/answer interviews saying he would have loved to play him when both were at their peak. Just to find out. And Ronnie has definitely read the Joe Davis book on snooker, I remember him saying something about technique etc. So the influence is there in the background.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 21,820 Mod ✭✭✭✭Brian?

Trump and Robertson don’t get close for me, unless they start winning more Worlds or UKs.

Trump particularly is great at winning smaller ranking Tournaments and nothing big.

Just back jeez what happened while I was gone

I left after zhang made that great escape to the yellow

Is Higgins getting exposed today as well 😁

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,304 ✭✭✭tomhammer..

Ya I forgot Joe Davis and Reardon

Where do they fit in on the all-time list

No point comparing them to today's players , that would be unfair

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,304 ✭✭✭tomhammer..

Top 6 is same as discussed here

    No J Davis or Reardon

The modern era probably starts with S Davis .Dunno are they using that as the cutoff point.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,202 ✭✭✭✭The Nal

    Agree on both.

Robbos record in the worlds is absolutely abysmal considering how many great seasons hes had in other tournaments.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,158 ✭✭✭Sandor Clegane

The only thing holding Robertson back is his performances in the WSC, he's on par with the rest excluding Ronnie, Davis and Hendry obviously with his masters and UK results but for whatever reason his performance in the WSC has been very poor.

On multiple occasions he's gone into the WSC as favorite due to having an incredible season but he's always underperformed.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,304 ✭✭✭tomhammer..

    He's not

He's behind the top 6 in the modern era

Based on ranking events and world titles

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 21,820 Mod ✭✭✭✭Brian?

The thing holding him back is that he hasn’t won as many big titles as the others. It’s that simple. Same for Trump

    they/them/theirs

    Trump 7, Robertson 8, Reardon 9, Jimmy 10.

I'm having Jimmy in my top 10, and that's that, ahead of Murphy, Alex, Parrot, Ding, Thorburn etc

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,158 ✭✭✭Sandor Clegane

I acknowledged he's behind on world titles, in terms of UK and Masters titles he's on similar ground to the rest with 3 Uk's and 2 Masters...that's on par with Selby and Higgins, if he'd of done more in the WSC he'd be in the conversation as a top 5 or 6 player.
