Richie Mo’unga, Sam Whitelock, Leicester Fainga’anuku, Jack Goodhue and Sione Havili all heading away, while yet another all black is absent in Braydon Ennor, who is out for the season with yet another long term injury, this time his ACL.

out wide the signings of Jacob Ratumaituvuki-Kneepkens and Timoci Tavatavanawai is very exciting, and a great addition to the already in place martin bogada, jonah lowe and jona nareki.

up front Tom sanders and mitch dunshea are added from the crusaders to strengthen the engine room.

notable movements:

Beaudie barrett to japan is the big name leaving, while Nepo Laulala will also be missed. Leon Mc Donald leaving a scoach to join the AB coaching squad is a big move, but vern Cotter coming in could be that ingredient that moves this very talented blues squad from bridesmaid to bride. Roger Tuivasa scheck moving back to rugby league is probably the only other noteworthy move out.

Angus ta'avo returns to the blues from the chiefs, and is the only real noticeable signing, as the squad is strong enough already.

A bit of a left field appointment to say the least, Clarke has no 15s experience apart from 3 years as assistant coach in hurricanes and london irish over 7 years ago.

Super Rugby has fallen off a cliff, the Aus sides are not up to standard and I can't see them getting much better. The island teams are getting better but still very early days.

It's really a competition on which NZ side can win.

Didn't Cotter get Joe into some behind the curtain role for the Blues? I thought I heard something when he was leaving NZ. They could be the team to put good money on.

Cheers @sydthebeat Good work putting all that together. I always quite enjoy SR in the year after a RWC as you often see some bright new star burst on the seen. 2012 saw the arrival of Beauden Barrett, Aaron Smith, Brodie Rettallick and Julian Savea if memory serves me correctly. All against Ireland (sorry).

I didn't really watch much NPC this year so don't know who to really look out for but no doubt there will be a few players bursting on to the scene. I have high expectations for Fergus Burke and Zach Gallagher at the Crusaders. Would love to see Segner nail down a starting spot with the Blues because I love his work rate. The battle between TJP and Roigard will be very interesting. And I'd love to see Fakatava and Aumua finally live up to the hype they had around them a few years ago.

@Clo-Clo wouldn't be surprised if Schmidt got involved with the Blues. He was the assistant coach there before going to Clermont and himself and Cotter worked together at Clermont and BOP before that.

some questions to be answered this season in SR 24.

how will the Tahs fare without captain Hooper? they've also lost Latu, Faulkner, Beale and Nadolo from their "senior" group. Add to that the knowledge that Marky Mark is out the door at the end of the season. This could be a stodgy season for them.
How will the only irish player in SR this season, ex tarf lock Cormac Daly, get on? He starts on the bench this weekend. The reds have brought in great experience with Alex Hodgman and JTA from ulster, can they become the top aussie team ? Will Kiss do better than Thorn?
how will the rebels play with their demise staring them in the face for the whole season? will their players be looking further afield all teh way through?
can the brumbies maintain their status as teh best aussie team? will they suffer the loss of nic white much?
can the force provide a challenge to the play offs? they appear to have recruited the best of the aussies, to go with a pretty settled first team. is cron out of his depth?

how will the crusaders deal with the loss of some very senior players, and Robertson? add to that the loss now of Jordan for the season. can reihana fulfill his promise?
will the blues continue to flatter to deceive, surely SURELY this is (again) their season?? is cotter the man to bring them back to the gloryland?
will the highlanders end up bottom of the NZ log again? No Aaron Smith, but certainly have recruited extremely cleverly. Play offs a must this season
how will the chiefs fare without Cane, Weber, Rettalick? they cannot afford an injury to either jacobsen or Vaai.
can the canes move beyond their mediocre status of the last few years? will riogard move beyond perenara (as he should?) interestingly the canes are starting with the unknown Jordi Viljoen this weekend.

can the drua build on their RWC progression? Can they finally solidify their set piece. an extra 3 points last season and they would have had a very winnable play off game against brumbies. Can they go one further this season and make the SFs ?
what can pasifika do to not end up at the bottom of the league? the loss of aumua will be huge. Is Julian Savea the answer at 12? Their back 5 forwards have been their weak point (excluding fai'ilagi). An increase on 1 season win is their goal in my opinion.

Theres generally more of an attitude of toughen up, walk it off, you'll be right in Australia, NZ and SA than there is in the NH. And that's not just in rugby but in life in general. I see it in the difference in parenting style of my kiwi mates and their Irish partners. Also the difference between my Irish family and kiwi family.

Not saying the SH attitude is right or wrong, just that there is a cultural difference.

Has long been a bad joke. Some of the head collisions and excuses for players in the business end of last season were brutal. Jeff Wilson was particularly dismissive of it, I recall. Lads were being taken off, unsteady on their feet with Wilson calling for play on.

When we see a SH referee in the Wales vs Scotland game determine that two clear head collisions were no cause for concern or penalty, it suggests that it's not just pundits/players that see things very differently.

It was mentioned repeatedly that it would potentially bite them in the RWC and it did with NZ shipping 6 yellow cards and 2 red cards over the tournament including a red and yellow in the final both for dangerous play.

How many of NZ's cards were for high shots? I know the red in the final was but the yellow wasn't.

The consistency amongst referees AND judiciaries is one of the big issues in rugby globally.

I think you're probably right about the Frizzell card not being given in SR or in the Rugby Championship. TBH I hadn't heard of it as foul play in union before the final. I knew it was a foul in league.

There is an issue with how tackling front on was coached in NZ and Australia as we were always taught to stand up and wrap the ball to prevent the offload. Offloading was always a big part of the game down there at all ages, by all players we were coached to prevent it.

Unrelated but you'll notice the same in American football. Players still lead with the helmet into tackles and head shots are almost routine in every game but it is rarely if ever penalized and almost never acknowledged by commentators. Similar to SH rugby I think in terms of the fear that fully eliminating it will lose something essential from the game.

Agreed. It seemed all the rage for about a season that leading with the helmet and helmet on helmet was being called and then it was forgotten about. Unless it was a tackle on a QB or a star receiver.

On the SR I watched this morning, good win for the Blues. Is this our year? Watching that match, 27 degrees and bright blue skies made me very homesick.

After watching Western Force highlights, it's clear the opposition were fitter, hungrier and better.Force looked slow and underpowered. Australia has its work cut out. I can't see Western Force being a match for any of the N.Z sides.

They scheduled the game for her same time as the NZ warriors v sharks rugby league game in Auckland, which drew a huge crowd, and even more eyes on TV.

Plus they played it in Hamilton which would have a lot of warriors fans anyway.

No idea why they didn't give out free tickets to schools kids in the city though??

But it's a big issue in support rugby having teams play in stadia that are way too big for them.

Pasifika "home" stadium is the MT smart stadium in Auckland which at 25.000 capacity is simply ridiculous for moana
