This is a serious bottle job from the Irish batsmen. It's crazy how poor they are against spin. They just lose their minds completely, Stirling could've been out 3 balls in a row. Even more frustratingly the Irish spinners were absolutely toothless on this pitch

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,947 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Stirling gone, another poor shot… just hung the bat towards the ball, not enough conviction.

still, did we envision that Ireland would do it the easy way ?

For fear of crowing it, at what point do we start counting backwards? Target below 50 now 62/4

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,026 ✭✭✭Peter File

The time to panic will be if the text on the screen changes from the nimber of runs we need to win to the number of wickets they need to win.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,595 ✭✭✭✭KevIRL

38 left to get. Good partnership this.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,947 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

28 needed 6 wickets remaining, ok, I’m thinking we have this… we have to,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,026 ✭✭✭Peter File

    19 to win and a 50 partnership.

    Confident now!!

  • Registered Users Posts: 730 ✭✭✭wicorthered

Captains know here in fairness to Balbirnie, kept his head when others were losing theirs. Tucker looks a good first class player!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,026 ✭✭✭Peter File

    101/4.

    10 runs neded to win!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 625 ✭✭✭dohboy

Great stuff and hats off to Andy Balbirnie and Lorcan too. Played a good partnership for this format.

    A test win.

  • Registered Users Posts: 730 ✭✭✭wicorthered

Great from those two at the end. At 13/3 I was sure it was over. Great fightback.

    Mark Adair brilliant all game

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,861 ✭✭✭Mysterypunter

Great stuff, better team and well deserved, nice to see it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,214 ✭✭✭Xander10

    Never in doubt 😅

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,595 ✭✭✭✭KevIRL

Fantastic win, Highest batting score from any batsman was Balbirnies 58*, says a lot. A great all round performance from Ireland. 5/1 outsiders before the start of play on day 1.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,174 ✭✭✭Royale with Cheese

Fair play to Andy Balbirnie, when I saw Ireland were 4 down for not much and he wasn't one of them I thought things were looking grim. Didn't expect him to be the one to guide Ireland over the line.

Contrary to some views on here I think he's played a v good capts role this game even outside this batting performance. Probably after tea yesterday the only issue along with some dubious reviewing on day 1.

Zimbabwe test at home in August, is that the hope/rumour? Adair hinted at an August test in his post-match interview.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,947 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

I’d be surprised. Zimbabwe are not due over this side of the world….

if there is a test there would also have to be ODIs / T20’s to justify it. No way will Zimbabwe come all that way just for a 4 day test.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,595 ✭✭✭✭KevIRL

Home Zim test match been spoken about for a good while this year already. NOB referenced in day 1 comms of this test also

Credit where credit is due. he steadied the ship and brought it home.

Just about barely a mention on RTE Sports News - after previews of athletics, some golf tournament and snow affecting league of Ireland soccer..

Zimbabwe are scheduled for a test in Stormont in August!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,595 ✭✭✭✭KevIRL

It really is a fantastic day. Reflecting back on it, a great achievement. The team have taken a lot of knocks in recent years, not all of it undeserved either. They haven't really been helped a jot by the ICC but to get a win in a test which wasn't at home and also wasn't affected by weather/conditions/pitch that particularly favoured one side over the other at and stage is just brilliant

  • Registered Users Posts: 730 ✭✭✭wicorthered

I'd love today to kick in the first class game here. With only our second ever home test scheduled for August it's vital there's some domestic first class action this summer. If finances are tight don't bother with inter pros, slim it down further. If the unions complain, CI needs to stand up to them.

3 games, North V South. Get the best 22 players on the pitch against each other, draft between areas if needed

Doheney, Moor, Balbirnie, Campher, Tector, Tucker, Dockrell, McCarthy, Hand, Mayes (Drafted), M Frost.

    V

Cummins, McCollum, Stirling, A Frost, Rock (drafted), T Tector (drafted), Macbeth, Mcbrine, Adair, Young, Hume.

There's 3/4 others people would argue should be included. The games would be competitive and much more beneficial than one sided Inter pros. Have days set aside for weather. Play all three in Stormont to make the most of home advantage when the test starts.

I didn't forget Little, but apparently he's unavailable for test cricket to focus on franchises.

Why when Ireland are starved for test match cricket didn't they organise at least one other test match as part of this series with Afghanistan, surely if the new test match playing nations like Afghanistan and Ireland are going to improve at the format they should be playing test matches every chance they get.

  • Registered Users Posts: 132 ✭✭EveryoneKnowsNobodyCares

You're 100% correct. I mean they managed two Tests against Sri Lanka, and they were great (apart from the results) (although we got 492 in our first innings in the 2nd Test, more than our 374/14 total against Afghanistan), and it really, really shows the value and importance of regular Test cricket. Imagine playing Afghanistan again with a series lead to defend!

Afghanistan batting after Ireland won the toss are 22/0 after 6 overs in the first ODI

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,947 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Economical and impressive from ireland to start with...

That said be nice to make an impression on the wickets column a fifth of the inniings complete and as I type a gimmie of a chance put down.. lads ! Ffs how was that nor taken 😬

The more replays the worse it looks.. Campher too.... jeez

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,392 ✭✭✭✭Furze99

Let's hope Stirlings enthusiasm to bat second is born out with results. Could be looking at 300 here easily.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,251 ✭✭✭VillaMad

Afghanistan 81-0 from 19 overs. Looking very comfortable at the moment. Ominous.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,947 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

That's what I was thinking, pitch looks very docile, hopefully it doesn't deteriorate.... batting so far looks handy..

That 300+ chase is a strong probability..

Wonder how longer the Afghan lads will hold off before putting the foot down and go all out targeting boundaries

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,947 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

    Finally a wicket from Woerkom....

Need any couple of quick ones...

Our bowlers have posed little threat... one dropped catch and an optimistic lbw shout...

31 overs before the first wicket..

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,251 ✭✭✭VillaMad

Lovely delivery from van Woerkom that.

Gurbaz heading for a big hundred it seems.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,623 ✭✭✭MFPM

Slow enough rate for Afghanistan.. Will they get 300?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,251 ✭✭✭VillaMad

Should do easily. With just one wicket down, every batsmen after these can just attack from ball one.

I'd expect Gurbaz to accelerate once he passes 100.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,947 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Awful start from Dockrell, we'd put the lid on the run rate slightly then he goes for 16 from his first.

Van Woerkom picks up Omarzi, maybe too little too late, let's see if we fetch couple more... limit the total.

would wonder how different things might look if Campher had held that catch earlier.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,595 ✭✭✭✭KevIRL

    Gurbaz out!

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,251 ✭✭✭VillaMad

Gurbaz gone. Big wicket for Ireland.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,392 ✭✭✭✭Furze99

Why you'd wonder put Dockrell on when he's hardly bowled in anger for us in ages.

Two quick wickets now, your man Gurbaz don't look too happy with being bowled. Bit more grace wouldn't harm him, since he got a big let off.

Who are the lads in plain dress in the stands they keep showing? Ayatollahs / Royalty/ Taliban?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,623 ✭✭✭MFPM

Nice comeback by Ireland with those two quick wickets.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,595 ✭✭✭✭KevIRL

    Now a 4th

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,595 ✭✭✭✭KevIRL

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,392 ✭✭✭✭Furze99

Sure, there's more than a few bob proposed to be spent on places like Casement Park. How about a bit of support for an All Ireland team?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,251 ✭✭✭VillaMad

A home series was also slated for this year against South Africa and that has now been moved to the UAE in October.

The costs of hosting international cricket with all the gadgets and temporary stands are just going up and up and Ireland are completely reliant on ICC funding at the moment.

So far it seems like an T20 series against Pakistan in May/June and a test match against Zimbabwe is scheduled sometime in the summer as well.
