EV adapters

Hi,

I need to buy a type 2 to type 1 EV adapter. Main charge point is a tethered type 2 7kW - for use on a 70kwh battery car.

I then also have a 2014 nissan leaf that I need to charge. So ideally would get a type 2 to type 1 ‘EV adaptor’

what are the general thoughts on these apaptors? Are they safe or a bit dodge.

My parents have used one for exactly this purpose for ages with no issue. Their Leaf (yours too?) can only charge at 16A, so it’s not such a challenge to make it work well.

Is there such a thing as a Chademo to Type 2 adaptor ?

As far as I know they are incompatible due to different 'communication protocols' and any adaptor would need to have electronics in it but just asking anyway !

my leaf can charge at max 3.6kw an hour (does not have the 6.6kw onboard charger)

I think the 3.6kw onboard charger correlates to just 16 amps.

CHAdeMo is DC and Type 2 socket (for most cars) is AC so that adapter is a no no

No just plug the tethered cable into the adapter and then adapter into port on car. Have done other way as well without any issue. Used on 2 different makes as well (VW and Hyundai)

lets say when I plug it in as above the car is not on a timer etc and starts charging straight away. Is this ok?

also, if car is still charging and I need to plug it out, what’s the safest way to do this, the sequence etc.

All from a safety point of view

I may be over thinking but if I do it right from the start, the happy days.

Have been using one for 18 months, have plugged and unplugged when the charge has been active. Well, plugging in the charging will only start after the security checks are complete. But works perfectly with our 3.6 kW car and haven't seen any sparks even when unplugged hot.

But is this not a bit dodge. Unplugging the adapter whilst still charging. As I think the adapters don’t have a button on them to stop the charge.

Type 2 cables don’t have buttons for that either (though you do generally have to get the car to unlock them, something that would also stop the charging process). If you want to be sure, you can certainly stop the process yourself from either the car or the supply side.

im reading elsewhere that stopping from the supply side is not good.

my use case is this.

timer in the CAR set to start charging at 11:30pm and stop at 08:30am (+1 hour in summer etc)

I plug car in at about 9pm most nights - so always before the charging is due to start. So safe I guess?

no matter what happens, the car will be fully charged after 5 hours max, so finished at 04:30am.

car gets its first use around 08:30am so the unplugging of the charger would happen at this time. As no active charging happening, I guess it’s relatively safe to unplug??

I suspected it would cause issues but I was as surprised as anybody that there is no arcing.

Maybe the pins are a bit offset and the computers have enough time to detect that the pilot signal is gone before the power pins are disconnected. For a computer the time it takes to unplug is a long period of time.

You are over thinking it. You have a Hypervolt and will use an adapter to charge your Type 1 Leaf. I have the same. The adapter doesn't lock to the type 2 end of the charger. When you unplug from the car, or by separating the adapter at any stage of the charge cycle, you are simply breaking the loop and handshake is broken as a result. I prefer to unplug from the car and then separate the adapter from the cable, but that's just a preference. It is exactly the same as unplugging your granny cable from the car while charging is ongoing, or complete. The only difference is the potential current being terminated. If you really want to rack your brains, you could look into swapping the type 1 port for a type 2 port on the car 😂

As suspected, I checked the type 1 plug today and you can clearly see that the pilot contacts are designed to break the contract before the power pins and hence by the time the others break the current has already been switched off.

On a Type 1 (J1772) plug the release button/lever is also the proximity pilot switch and as soon as you push it to release the lock, the car will stop charging.
