Washing Machine Water Intake Help

Hi Guys,

Just moved into a new (old) house. I’m trying to set up my washing machine. Unfortunately, I’m completely clueless when it comes to plumbing and have no clue what the previous owners did when removing their washing machine.

I thought I had everything connected properly but the washing machine is telling me it can’t intake water. I thought I was on the right track as I felt a little bit of water when connecting the intake hose to the piping below.

I think I’m missing something obvious. Appreciate any advice you may have.

So, obviously when you were connecting it the water was turned off. normally there is a little lever at that place to turn water on and off to the machine. but your pipe doesn't seem to have it -so where do you turn off and on the water?

There may be something under your sink and usually there's something to turn water on and off around the sinks and toilets located in the hotpress.

Is that a shutoff valve just below where the hose connects with it's lever missing? Should be possible to turn it with a pair of pliers if it is.

Thanks Jimmy, that was my initial thought too. However the piping structure below seems to feed other water sources which seem to be running fine. The yellow pipe which goes to the left feeds an outside water tap which is working perfectly, the copper pipe which goes to the right feeds the boiler which is working away without issue. There’s a small tap on the pipe to the outside water tap but it seems to be permanently stuck in the ‘on’ position.

Thanks Guys, I’ve tried to move it with a pliers but no dice. It would appear to be missing a screw- I can see threads in the hole. Apologies, not great pictures

When you get it sorted, check the height of that waste standpipe. It looks a little low. Maybe just camera angle.

Thanks it’s 55cm at the top and I’ve shoved the washing machine hose to the bottom of it. Hope this is ok👍🏻

That's exactly it. The mains feed appears to be coming up out of the ground and there's two other spurs coming off it before it gets to where the washing machine connection is. The screw thread is to hold the lever on it's not vital to the valve working. As mentioned it'll only turn a quarter turn, just need a bit more elbow grease.

That's not correct AFAIK. Look at the installation instructions or download them. It'll give you guidance.

Ya the installation manual seems to be pretty quiet on the plastic drain pipes. (It goes into far more detail on sinks or basins) It just says to connect it securely with a rubber nipple.

it’s doing its calibration programme at the moment so I’ll monitor it to see what happens with the waste water.

Also the flexible pipe should not be shoved into the bottom of the pipe, only about 5 or 6cm, otherwise it'll create a syphon.

Post a pic of the elbow fixture. I don't see the need for one.

I would put a 15cm extension on the stand pipe though. If washing machine and sink discharge at same time you could have problems.

Edited 150cm to 15 cm above.

Thanks Wearb. Ya I plan to extend it as soon as I get the chance to go to a DIY shop. I’ll try to lengthen the drain pipe and add a proper connector. Turns out the dryer also requires a water outlet so will try to combine all into one structure.

This is all in a utility room. Sink and dishwasher drain separately in the kitchen.

Picture attached- elbow came with the machine and installing was recommended in videos I reviewed. Should be a temporary measure anyway. Thanks for the advice!
