I think Stokes is a guy who is quite adept at both the old unjustly talking things up and misplaced loyalty…dangerous.

problem with that is it becomes too easy to position yourself as a bit of a BS merchant and he’s heading that way after his positive comments in the wake of a comprehensive 4-1 series defeat…

He needs to realise that he can be honest, frank and reasonable with people, without throwing his team under the bus…

the press and fans will and probably are already are turning on him… this a fella who had millions of tonnes of support, goodwill and likability…. People don’t like being bullshîtted, especially when they are paying money to go watch you, support you and then the BS….

you have to balance honesty and loyalty.

Highly doubt England fans are ready to turn on Stokes. Far too much credit in the bank. 4-1 looks bad but it was closer than that if you watched it. Plus it's India, no one wins there. And he had three young spinners with a combined one cap before the series. All important context. Foolish to expect anything more than nicking a game or two. Simply not realistic.

Press might because that's the gig. They invented the term Bazball and ran wild with it when it was winning. Stokes and McCullum have always hated it. Pretty pathetic to be laying into them now after finally losing a series.

look at the margins of defeat though,

one defeat by an innings and 64 runs..

    one defeat by 5 wickets..

    one defeat by 434 runs

    one defeat by 106 runs

thats not close in fairness. And yep, watched it but those stats there speak for themselves.

Laying into them nope, being critical for a pretty disastrous series.

NZ lose 1 wicket and score an entertaining 109 runs in the AM session of their second innings vs Australia. A very entertaining morning of test cricket in Christchurch……. NZ lead by 149, 7 wickets remaining. Aussies will be getting nervous….next session crucial. I’d say NZ will be hoping for a total lead of 300 plus.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,861 ✭✭✭Mysterypunter

New Zealand now on 345/6. 251 in front. My 80 all out prediction was miles off the mark. Still looking for 70 or 80 more I'd say

New Zealand 372. Australia need 279

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,947 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Australia struggling 34/3 but a solid century partnership would steady their ship.

Smith, Khawaja and Labuschagne out very cheaply…. Green and Head struggling to score… id say NZ with that lead and having taken early wickets are the favourites. Green gone as I type, another for Sears, this has been a classic.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,623 ✭✭✭MFPM

Good second innings by NZ, I'd make them favourites now, Aus need 202 with 6 wickets remaining. If they can Head and/or Freen early they'd have a great chance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,947 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Yep, NZ slightly favourites and two early wickets it’s essentially game over and 1-1…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,861 ✭✭✭Mysterypunter

Session delayed by rain but dominated by Australia 174/5, Marsh 55* Carey 50*

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,947 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Two all rounders making the NZ attack look suddenly blunt… 77 needed now and the favourites title fairly swing back to Australia…. Some average bowling… 2-0 incoming…. Been a good contest but 80/5 —-> 209/5….. some recovery but NZ will be dismayed going from having them 80/5 and in a world of shît to practically cruising.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,623 ✭✭✭MFPM

All over bar the shouting. Marsh and Carey have been excellent. NZ looking like they'll fall short once more against Australia.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,861 ✭✭✭Mysterypunter

220/6 now Marsh out for 80 after a stand of 140 with Carey who is 71*

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,947 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Almost a hattrick from Sears, 224/7… 😅 this is brilliant !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,623 ✭✭✭MFPM

Starc gone too, 7 down! Maybe it's not over.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,861 ✭✭✭Mysterypunter

Sears with 2 in 2, Starc 1st ball duck 227/7 now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,947 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Fûck, about an inch over the gully fielder …. Australia have as they do, some luck, could be 9 down…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,623 ✭✭✭MFPM

Will Carey get a century? Needs 13 but Aus only need 17.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,861 ✭✭✭Mysterypunter

Ended 98* but wasn't too bothered. 32* for Cummins. 281/7 win by 3 wickets

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,623 ✭✭✭MFPM

Australia win, Carey just misses out on 100. NZ paid for poor first innings, they did well to get into the match but they couldn't finish the job.

    Two observations…

Thought Southee was a bit negative the last 15 overs with his field placement. Waiting till single digit runs were needed before packing the slips cordon and having more close catchers…. Don’t get that…. Could have applied a bit more pressure, weird from a bowler captaining , needed to risk it….

also after lunch the accuracy from the bowlers in general seemed to dissipate, made it a lot easier for Cummins and Carey.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,861 ✭✭✭Mysterypunter

Rattled through the run chase today. New Zealand also slogged away their last 3 wickets in the 2nd innings. Southee is a terrible batsman for a player who scored 77 in his debut test. 100 tests now and I think it's still his highest score. He got it off 40 balls against England with 9 sixes. Yesterday he had Kuggeleijn 40* at the other end, but just gave his wicket away, does it a lot. 320 may have been a winning lead

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,337 ✭✭✭Gillespy

Southee only knows one way to bat unfortunately. Looks like he's unsure of staying on as captain. His output has dropped off a cliff in the last year or so. Captaincy is the only thing keeping him in the side.

Long wait now to the next Australia test match and it's the big one, India at home either side of Christmas. India going for their third straight series win there. Be interesting to see the Aussie batting lineup for that first game. Smith to open or go back to four. Labushagne will continue as there seems to be no one to replace him.

Umpiring is just getting unbelievably worse.

im dipping in and out of Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh… both sides playing some brilliant cricket…still could go either way…

an LBW shout by the Bangladeshi bowler, and a very impressive, aggressive and vociferous appeal from everyone in green….sees no hesitation from the umpire to give it out… 👆🏻

Never looked out in realtime and on replay… big inside edge onto pad, plus the contact is not nearly in line with the stumps, it’s about 3-4 inches outside off and probably going over, what the actual fúck is the craic with these umpires ?

James Anderson has announced that England's next Test match against the West Indies in July at Lords will be his last.

There will obviously be huge celebrations honouring his career that week, but it really has been an iconic career and for it to last 20 years will never be repeated. To be almost 42 and still bowling as well as ever is astonishing which is a testament to his skill and fitness. Hopefully he can get through a couple of games with Lancashire before a fitting send off at Lords.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,947 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

outstanding cricketer. Shame there wasn’t a test opportunity at Old Trafford where he could have bowed out, that would have been nice & fitting……

He was always a great watch, a really entertaining cricketer, ruthlessly competitive, extremely skillful …. Seems from a distance like a nice lad too, never had a problem with negative headlines or controversy… alway very grounded and thoughtful in interviews.

187 tests, 194 ODIs and a handful of T20Is plus his Lancashire career. An extraordinary amount of cricket played. A real credit as to how he must have looked after himself off the field…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,174 ✭✭✭Royale with Cheese

Was extremely ineffective last summer. A bit better over the winter but definitely time for England to move on now, he got to 700 which is probably what he was aiming for. I went to the Oval in 2011 purely to see the legend Sachin Tendulkar play before he retired, but I can now say I saw the legend Jimmy Anderson play that day too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,947 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

see Jofra Archer is back in the English setup.

    He has a total of 18 wickets in 15 T20i’s ….

Probably the last chance saloon for him.

Despite his pace and tenacity he just hasn’t been an effective enough or consistent enough wicket taker in any of the 3 formats internationally really.

    Matches / wickets

    Test….13/42

    ODI….21/42

    T20i…. 15/18

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,947 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

the USA beat Bangladesh by 6 runs. Bangladesh totally collapsed in their reply to the US total but a slight tail wag gave them a chance , alas not enough wickets and they get bowled out.

I was just coming to comment on that. Incredible result. Bangladesh had a strong team out too. Means they win the series. USA are in our group at the world cup. Might be a tricky game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,947 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

England were set for 200+ vs Pakistan but losing a glut of wickets for 144/3 to 169/7 really stifled them.

Good start with the ball though , Ali gets Rizwan, third delivery, no runs on the board.

The stadium which will host the opening match of the T20 World Cup in Dallas this weekend has been hit by severe weather, causing the cancellation of Tuesday's official warm-up match.

The United States and Bangladesh were due to meet at 16:30 BST at Grand Prairie Stadium in Texas but the match has been called off because of the "conditions of the facilities".

Warnings for strong thunderstorms, flash flooding and tornados have been given for the area. Images on social media appear to show the stadium's giant TV screen has been blown over. Texas governor Greg Abbott said more than a third of counties were subject to a disaster declaration after extreme weather ploughed through the state.

There was further heavy rain overnight and winds up to 80mph while storm sirens sounded in the city of Dallas.

The opening match of the T20 World Cup between the US and Canada is due to take place in Dallas on Saturday, 1 June (01:30 Sunday BST).

if lots of overs and or entire matches are lost due to adverse weather… the ICC will take a real hammering and rightly so.

A few of the matches are in locations like Texas where the rainy season is finishing around late May / early June …. And further inclement weather such as storms and hurricanes can be prevalent throughout mid summer.

Haven’t looked at every venue in such detail but be nice if we get a good load of cricket….

Going to be a real unknown element to certain aspects of the tournament seeing as so little international cricket has been played there or covered from there…

Hopefully the US have their shît together and we have good consistent cricket pitches, quick enough flat outfields giving appropriate value for good shots.

This Pakistan keeper has had a lot on his plate. Rizwan is in the team too so not sure why he hasn't the gloves.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,947 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

England 67/0 after 5 overs. Tearing Pakistan a new one. Brilliant batting but not good bowling… or wicket keeping, first chance put down.

fûck me, what a drop. Kahn again. I’d have caught that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,623 ✭✭✭MFPM

This is a walk in the park for England. Pakistan are so hit and miss.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,947 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

surely there has to be a better wicket keeper somewhere in Pakistan than Azam Khan !

Either way, all over, England on top from the start….

anybody know if West Indies vs Australia is being broadcasted / streamed anywhere ? Starts in about 12 minutes but can’t see any listings or streaming info, thanks.

Edit : WI 68/1 after 5.. big score in the offing

Not been shown anywhere. West Indies teeing off for sure but then I guess it's easier when it's a 15-a-side game with no pressure on the match itself. Apparently, Australia are without a number of players as they were playing in the IPL and so some of the coaches have been fielding like George Bailey, Brad Hodge and Andrew McDonald to make up the numbers.

See that the two games in Dallas were rained off today. Hopefully the weather isn't a factor during the competition.

England with Jofra back look like the side to beat in the world cup. Any weakness you'd say was the bowling. Rashid the only banker with Sam Curran's loss of form and no more Woakes. He comes back and transforms it. Bowls the difficult overs taking pressure off the other seamers. Batting looks more devastating if anything with Salt and Jacks in.

Pakistan look a rabble. Rauf takes a wicket and makes a hand gesture to say that should his third wicket having two dropped by the keeper. Doesn't say much for team harmony. Although he has a point about the keeper. Looks so out of place and played like it too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,947 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

got to love the IPL… 🤦🏻‍♂️

Basically they have the whole of the sport in handcuffs and are leading it around with an electric cattle prod.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 396 ✭✭StormForce13

You've gotta admire the Pakistani selectors' commitment to diversity! (it's the only reason I can think of as to why Fatso Khan is being repeatedly selected as the national wicketkeeper!)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,947 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

you do indeed. I had to have a look see to figure if he was a handy batsman or wtf he might add to the team but in his 12 innings for the international side he averages 9.77….

  • Registered Users Posts: 726 ✭✭✭Debub

and USA beat Pakistan in a super over finish !

  • Registered Users Posts: 726 ✭✭✭Debub

and now Afghanistan puts one over NZ

Yet to make his full Lancashire debut but been involved in the Lancs setup since U10s.

    right-handed all-rounder apparently like his old man….

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,251 ✭✭✭VillaMad

So the first test match of the English summer will begin this week against the West Indies but it will be all about Jimmy Anderson who will be playing his final test match and even as he is only a few weeks shy of his 42th birthday, he took 7-35 last week for Lancashire and is still incredibly bowling as well as ever. 700 test wickets and likely to bowl his 40,000th ball in test cricket this week and as a seamer they are feats that will never be overtaken again in test cricket. Just a freak that will never be emulated again.

    As for the squads:
England: Brook, Crawley, Duckett, Lawrence, Pope, Root, J Smith (wk), Stokes, Woakes, Anderson, Atkinson, Pennington, Bashir, Potts
West Indies: Braithwaite, Imlach, McCaskie, M Louis, McKenzie, Da Silva (wk), Athanaze, Holder, Hodge, A Joseph, S Joseph, J Louis, Motie, Seales, Sinclair

England have dropped Bairstow and Foakes and so Jamie Smith will make his debut with the gloves. Dillon Pennington and Gus Atkinson will be hoping to make their debuts as England will have the impossible task to try to find the next Jimmy Anderson.
The West Indies will play their first test match since the iconic win in Brisbane back in January. As has been the case in recent times, their test squad is completely different from the limited overs sides and has a lot of inexperience again. Shamar Joseph was the revelation of the tour in Australia but has struggled badly with injury and form in the months since, so it would be asking a lot for him to come close to those performances. Kemar Roach had to pull out through injury and will be a big loss.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,623 ✭✭✭MFPM

I suspect this will be one of England's easier test summers with WI and Sri Lanka and makes sense to make some changes. The West Indies may get a victory but weather permitting England should win both series.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,947 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Jamie Smith is well thought of and for someone so young and inexperienced at only 23 ( 24 on Friday ) he can bat and keep.

high score in first class cricket is 234 not out and he averages 41.87

10 hundreds and 14 half centuries in 59 first class matches.

Last match for Surrey vs Essex he scored 100 & 70.

    Promising stats anyway.
