I'm looking to get a pre-purchase inspection done on a car for sale in Dublin. I've heard horror stories about the dealerships in this part of Dublin so just looking for piece of mind. There are a number of companies online offering pre-purchase inspections but I don't know which ones, if any, are reputable. Has anyone used one of these?

Will PM you a fella. Did one for me recently and can't recommend enough. Drove to the meeting point, did the inspection and gave all honesty feedback.

Unless someone can get underneath it too, can they actually do a proper inspection?

    Genuine question

Yeah, you need to bring it to a garage and get it up on a ramp. If the seller's serious he'll agree to drive it there. Just pick a garage and offer them an hour's labour to inspect it.

There could be unseen issues if not getting It up on a lift but an inspection still worthwhile if buyer themselves are clueless.

Where car is . Is more important

I'm based in Cork. Garage is in Dublin, Bluebell

    It’s always Bluebell.

    Avoid.

They made you look with the price.

Not all bad but you have to be careful.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,122 ✭✭✭Bobson Dugnutt

Pretty much all bad, so people would be better off to avoid it altogether. Not worth the effort trying to find the “diamond in the rough” amongst all the dirt birds and money launderers operating down there.

Thats not really true. If your from around the area and want to get into the motor trade then you pretty much have no choice but to set up in Ballymount/Naas Road/Bluebell area

Theres plenty of businesses that have been operating for years and its a great location if you want to start a motor trade business.

I have had two premises in that area and I don’t launder any money.

Ya of course there are all sorts of characters operating there but in general, high change over of businesses etc doesn't inspire confidence.

The one car we did buy from there years ago, the log book never turned up and the manager was strangely busy whenever we rang. Silly stuff. We got the book ourselves in the end but that kind of thing messing is so annoying. Luckily never had to bother with guarantee.

If you open around there , you have to be aware of the areas reputation . Paul Tobin is one of the few places that is reputable , I don't agree you hsvr to set up in that area

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 513 ✭✭✭JKerova1

All this has actually put me off the car completely. I didn't really know the place had such a reputation. Think I'll look elsewhere, thanks!

If your getting the car inspected then its a non issue really. Just the usual scaremongering about that area.

Why don’t you name the garage and you can be advised whether its good or bad?

It's Auto City. I don't know, I've kind of gone off the idea of buying in Dublin. I bought a car off N7 motors in Clondalkin a few years ago and had a bad experience, even after getting it checked out by a mechanic. I'll prob just concentrate around the Cork area, even if the selection isn't great.

Suit yourself, but limiting yourself to dealers outside of Dublin doesn’t make much sense. Your pretty much just painting everyone with the same brush

(I see you have edited your post and removed the part about not wanting to buy in Dublin)

    Hi OP

Can I ask. do you have a car to trade in, if not would you consider buying privately? I bought a number of cars private over the years, all in Dublin as it happens, and I'm not from there.

I wouldn't dream of buying a second hand car from a garage, it's either privately here or UK.

I cannot comment on Dublin garages, but my experience in dealing with Dublin folk is that they are decent, reasonable people to deal with. Also their cars are well looked after with below average mileage compared to some of the scrap for sale 'down the country' - to borrow a phrase

They around a good few years and sell new cars / vans also .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,491 ✭✭✭goochy

Ridiculous statement to say you wouldn't dream of buying a car from a dealer , it's harder to get finance for private sales and you can get good warranties from main dealers

You must have been buying fairly high end cars privately to have all good experiences , also main private sake cars are way overpriced

I’d never buy from a dealer either. I have the confidence and skill to buy privately and don’t need finance warranty or trade in facilities so why would I pay thousands more from a dealer when I can get a much better deal privately

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,491 ✭✭✭goochy

You're showing your cocky southwest Dub side now and that's coming from a fellow Dub !

That's not the average car buyer though , most have a trade in and need finance. Private sales are great for older or specialist cars but buying from a dealer is still the best option for most!

Back to the OP's question, anyone recommend a pre purchase inspection company?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,826 ✭✭✭User1998

Don’t mean to sound cocky at all, I have just bought and sold enough cars to know what I’m looking at and am willing to take a risk that what I’m buying has no major issues.

The reason I don’t need finance is because I don’t buy new cars or cars that I can’t afford. If others want to use finance that is fine by me.

But you are right, a lot people wouldn’t have a clue at what there looking at when it comes to buying a car

On the flip side tho if your getting a mechanical inspection done why would you limit yourself to just dealers? A mechanical inspection would be more worthwhile on private sale cars

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,491 ✭✭✭goochy

😀, yes a mechanical inspection makes private sales a viable option but there is alot of overpriced private sale stuff .

there is a 2018 older model Continental GT for sale for ages - not far off dealer prices for current model - just an example

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 513 ✭✭✭JKerova1

I do have a car but it's a 2008 diesel Volvo which is basically worthless as a trade in. I normally only buy privately, it just happens that this garage has a particular car in a colour/spec I was looking for, that's the only reason I considered buying from there.

they are in business about 20 years and are Maxus and ssangyong dealers so one of the better options around

Can anyone recommend a pre purchase inspection company?

Dozens of them on Google search, but don't want to get burned.
