NCT: Car now undriveable

I took my car for NCT March 8th and on the way home, what was previously a rattle turned into a very loud noise which got progressively worse. The mechanic told me he didn't do the emissions test because he thought the engine might explode (his words) I emailed NCT Customer Services Department as soon as I got home, still waiting on a reply, so emailed them again today. I got the car towed to the garage this morning (garage couldn't look at it any sooner) and now waiting to see what needs to be done.

Do you think I may have a case for compensation? I've been without my car since that day.

    Thanks for reading/replying.

    T*

Nothing to do with nct that your engine was on it last legs

Well I doubt you have a case, as the emissions is one of the very first tests when they bring the car in so its not like they done anything or changed anything on your car. I would imagine it was going before your NCT and it just happened to get that bad once there.

Did you get the failed dangerous sticker?

You signed a waiver to have your car tested so you will have no comeback with the NCT. It sounds like your engine was already on it's way out so it would have happened eventually, test or no test.

An engine doesn't give the death rattle until it's near dead. You need a new engine/car.

Compensation from whom and for what? I'm a bit confused here.

From NCT centre. there was no loud noise until I drove it away

    Compensation for what?

Your car clearly had a fault going in.

Did you check the oil level before bringing it in? When was it last serviced? how many km ago?

    5. The engine is in a fit state to be tested e.g. cam belt / timing belt. You may be asked to sign a disclaimer at the test centre.

Taken from the FAQ on NCT.IE

Edit: From your OP was it the the tester "mechanic" that said the engine wasn't fit state to to be tested and because of that didn't?

I have always been asked to sign a disclaimer for diesel cars and never for a petrol car.

In any event I doubt that you will get any compensation your engine was either on the way out or required repair before it did fail nothing to do with the test.

What would you put on the solicitor's letter:

"Causing a rattle to turn in to a loud noise."

A seized engine is usually due to lack of oil. A leak and/or failure to keep it topped up. Why would you take a case against the NCT centre for your own lack of maintenance, unless of course you mistakenly believe they will fund you the purchase of a replacement car.

"The mechanic told me he didn't do the emissions test because he thought the engine might explode (his words)"

This tells you all you need to know. He didn't even test it as it was so dangerous. Of course you are not entitled to compensation. Maybe he's entitled to compensation from you for bringing in a car that was so dangerous to potentially cause him harm if he tested it.

But you said there was previously a rattle so the fault was there before the test. Your engine was bolloxed before the test, the NCT test would do nothing to cause damage to the engine.

If the NCT test is going to cause a problem to arise, then that problem was going to arise anyway.

Better that it does arise in the NCT centre than when trying to make a manoeuver at 120KM on the motorway!

I'd say nobody wants to hear that at this moment

I know at the NCT centre in Ballymun whenever I've been there, when the lads collect the cars from where the customer parked it, they usually give it some beans on the way around to the entrance to the test area. (In my opinion this is perfectly fine as it'll give them a bit of a feel for the car before testing it). So am wondering if the OP was essentially nursing the car (as it already had a pre-existing rattle), and when the NCT guy jumped in, simply drove it like any car would be driven and that perhaps exacerbated an already pre-existing condition?

How do you know the engine needs replacing?

Could be something as simple as a pulley/crank pulley

or even a dual mass flywheel that's finally given up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,191 ✭✭✭Dr_Colossus

+1 on checking the oil, if you did and topped it up did you replace the oil cap afterwards?

When I had the NCT a few months ago and was collecting the keys from the counter another customer was doing similar to be told the engine was knocking, car was low on oil and that the engine bay was covered in it. Turned out the lad had topped up the oil the day prior and forgot to replace the cap making a proper mess of everything.

He didn't do the emissions test, which afaik is the only part where they rev the engine. So you're basically trying to suggest the NCT center broke a healthy engine by driving your car a total of about 50 feet and leaving it idle for a while whilst they did the other parts of the test.

Can you not see how ridiculous that is?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,799 ✭✭✭✭Akrasia

Ah now, they also shake it a bit to test the suspension, and brakes... could easily have dislodged some of the Sellotape or Velcro that was holding the exhaust and engine bearings together

How dare you suggest to the OP that the maintenance and repair of their car is their responsibility? If it wasn’t for this racket of an NCT, they wouldn’t be in this position. For shame.

Someone else is responsible here and it certainly won’t be the adult, who in good conscience, nursed their precious car to the NCT centre only for it to be brutalised by a cad of an NCT tester.

Heads will roll for this, as soon as it is convenient for the NCTS to reply to the email.

Did this rattle, by any chance, sound like a small person was inside the crankcase, hammering to get out? Does it get faster when the engine spins faster? Does it get louder when the engine's under load.

    Something like this:

If you keep driving that thing it'll give itself a new inspection window in the block soon enough.

    It needs new engine.

isnt there something on nct test form about not accepting any damage liability ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 196 ✭✭[Steve]

Step 5 of the NCT pre-test checklist would apply here.

Once warmed up a healthy engine should run normally through the full rev range up to redline.

They aren’t liable if your engine fails as they drive it in to, or during, the test. Catching potential failures is the job of your local garage / yourself. I’d say this is just a case of bad timing really, it was going to fail - NCT or not.

Very hard to believe this is not a wind-up.

This has to be a wind up.

OP, was you car recently serviced? What was the cause of the rattle? If you don't know, why are you trying to apportion blame? Your car sounded like a bag of hammers and they refused to test, which sounds fair, as you then had to get it towed, so the engine seized?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,963 ✭✭✭long_b

OP - besides all of the valid points raised, if they were to give you anything it would set a crazy precedent.

They'd have every "close to death" car in the country brought in

Thankyou for taking the time to reply guys. The car is being scrapped.

Sure - no need if the chassis is in good order.

Replacement engines can be got second hand. It's a bit of labour but it'll get you something that's properly refreshed

What did the garage that collected the car say was the issue?

Would think it very unlightly the NCT will entertain your compensation request, as you did successfully drive it away from there yourself.

What make model year and milage is on it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,688 ✭✭✭✭mickdw

Ah come on, you must know your engine was on the way out if it was rattling.

The fact it wasn't tested suggests it was beyond poor going in.

Move on and be thankful it didn't blow up in a heap on the motorway or something.
