I think there is a net over at the back of the putting green. The putting green is fair decent.

(Potentially) dumb question: which tees are we playing from, do we know?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,043 ✭✭✭✭FixdePitchmark

I'd imagine only one tee set will be out - white and it will be on shorter side of white as winter.

Pack a beanie, temperature forecast to drop for Saturday!

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,605 ✭✭✭blue note

I lost a ball last year in the nets before the round. There's thick grass behind them and they're not fully sealed. It was a bad omen.

And there's very little difference between the blue and white tees in Corballis. But with the winds forecast, we'll need whatever leg up we can get. On the truly worst of days for the midweek opens I've seen people come 4th without breaking 20 points. For the day that's forecast, I'd be impressed if multiple people break 36 points.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,605 ✭✭✭blue note

I used to always get a bit annoyed by people giving out about the length of time rounds in Corballis take. It's exceptionally short, but with all the places balls can hide on the course the rounds take the same amount of time as a typical par 72 course. That said, 5 hours is very long!

Looking forward to making my first appearance and meeting everyone. Fairly new to golf and never played Corballis so hopefully someone in my group has so they can point me in the right direction.

Hope you all have a great day out for the 1st outing of the year. Will be interested to read all the postmortem comments that are posted.

    Welcome and enjoy.

Not too sure about some of ours guiding you around.

Some(who shall remain nameless) have been known to get lost looking for the 1st tee in courses and some have even gone to the wrong course.

    Google maps they aint😂

Sorry to be a late withdrawal everyone, but I now have to miss this unfortunately.

Hopefully still time for someone who wanted to play to take my place, was first out at 12:20.

Enjoy the day, and catch you all next time.

This will be my 3rd time @Sorbet so we’ll do our best!! Although you’ll have to decipher the Cork slang 3/4 of the 4 ball are from God’s county 😂

looking forward to 18 holes and firmish fairways it’s been a very long winter….

I'm in your group, looking forward to playing with you. I've only Corballis once myself, roughly 20 years ago, so we're both wandering around the unknown! :-)

Sign up to play with strangers off the internet they said. What could go wrong they said 😉!

I don’t often admit it but I’ve a bit of west Cork in my veins so we’ll be “pure sound” on the day. Let’s hope we’re “haunted” with the golf 😀.

A couple of updates and notes for the day.

The time sheet will get locked tonight. Due to a couple of people not being able to play we will have to make a few changes - we won't move anyone far from their current slot, but please be aware of this. Seve will most likely do this later today.

In case anyone has any last minute problems on the day, my number visible in clubnet (Member Hub section - member contact list). Last minute dropouts are not guarenteed a refund (although I will do my best to sort).

Pace of play: as we're late enough in the day, I would ask all groups to do their absolute best to keep up with the group in front. Corballis is a little tight and can get a bit slow at times so it's important that we keep things moving as best as we can. Please remember there is a 3 minute time limit to search for a ball. If you aren't sure your ball is in play/might be lost, play a provisional. Ready golf where it's safe to do so. Those that are newer to golf, please listen to the more experienced lads.

For the round itself, I'm planning for NTP on 6 and LD on 12. We'll also have placing on the fairway only - I've heard that some of the fairways have quite a lot of divots. This is ok for qualifying purposes. Please note that Golf Ireland recommend that all rounds should be submitted and we're encouraging all members of the society with a GUI to do this. I'll try to remind everyone of these on the day too!

Food and presentation of prizes will be held afterwards in Balcarrick golf club. It's out the gate of Corballis, turn left and it's on the right a couple of 100 meters away. As there is a long time from 1st tee time to last, I don't expect everyone to hang around - but please do if you can.

Think that's it for now, any questions or queries, please let me know. See you all in a couple of days!

Strong cold winds, exactly what I've been playing in unsuccessfully all winter and I don't think I'm going to be bucking that trend any time soon. Not long to go now.

Also I'm happy to have my timeslot moved forward if it makes life any easier for organising.

its true, 3.45, 4 hours is typical and you don't feel like you are waiting too long at that, its an active round. But 5 hours takes the piss.

There was an interclubs match last summer that went out after a swedish society. The swedes hadn't a clue where they were going and not many of them looked like they had played much golf before. It was the slowest 4 holes of golf I ever ever witnessed. They must have been 6 hours getting around that day

Any recommendations for a good podcast /episodes for the 2.5 hour journey?

I'd be a fan of either No Laying Up or Paddy talks golf. Tee up a few of the interview episodes rather than the tournament recaps. Pardon the pun 😬

I'll be tuning into the billy horschel one for the return journey.

Cannot wait for the outing weather looks to be reasonable in comparison to previous days outlook.

Quality afternoon on the links. Thank you Captain and committee for organizing. Play was slow, quality of play was questionable most of the time but some really good golf at times. the company was great Javier and Paul are two gents

Another boards society season begins with a quality day on the links thanks to captain Al and the committee for organising. Golf was most definitely questionable at times but the company was spectacular, thanks to kiith and truedub on that front.

My day started with plenty of oohs and aahs, that was just getting out of the car. What followed was a mixed bag at best. Starting with 4 putts, then a nice par. To get me thinking it could be a decent day. It would have been the first time ever I scored anyway decent in Corballis so I should have known myself there'd be plenty of high scores so several 8s followed but my card was saved by a few more pars.

Looking forward to Portmarnock in a few short weeks.

Just home after a long day, another enjoyable excursion with the Boardsies.

Many thanks to our esteemed Captain and his illustrious committee.

Well done to Fix on his maiden win.

For me it was very much a mixed bag..front 9 ok back 9 disaster. Two shots only stick out..a flop wedge shot when the ball was wedged against a bank by the green and a shot out of a pot bunker with the ball behind my feet and sand wedge so open it was practically flat. Everything else completely forgettable.

Great scenery and great company with WOGD and just cannot remember A's handle so will say nothing.

He is a serious good golfer and will defo be in the mix this year.

WOGD was like me..good shots mixed with not so good but again another day he will defo come good. His acrobatic skills saved him when he took a tumble..i think he said it was 7 back flips..a pirouette and a fodsbury flop..see attached pic...this was not staged i swear.

As for the course i agree with Tiger..defo marmite. Not for me i think.I accept losing balls but when you manage to hit one down the middle and it cant be found its a joke.

    What a wind...enough said.

Front 9 classic links back 9 like something just added on and goddam dangerous too..3 groups in close proximity crossing over and balls flying everywhere.

    Looking forward to Portmarnock already.

    Thanks again folks.

Good evening golfers, not long in the door, but a great day out. Nothing better than getting back out on the fairways with one of the best golf societies and hopefully another great year ahead. Hope ye all got home safely.

It was really nice seeing a lot of familiar faces before tee off and welcome to the new members.

Congrats to captain @Alanm and his committee for running today's outing really well and congrats to @FixdePitchmark on your maiden win.

In the words of Conor Moore, it was a case of "ugh! Man, the conditions were really really tough out there!!" Corballis is a course where you have to be accurate and also be able to play your percentages, it certainly put the manners on me. I was in the 13:10 group with @benny79 , @boccy23 , and new to boards, @Sorbet . It was a mixed day for us all, both Boccy and Benny were playing steady golf and got on some nice par runs and found their shots on the fairways and greens. Both of the lads were unlucky not to finish in the top 3 only for @benny1 or 2 shots not falling the right way. Sorbet had a nearly similar day to myself, but had some very good shots in his arsenal, holing some very good scramble putts, especially his recovery putt for par on the 16th. Benny was dialling in with his putter. Boccy had some great shots off the tee and a brilliant back nine with a solid 15 points coming in at the finish.

I was talking with some of the lads before the round and @charlieIRL reminded me of my "Sonya" on the last outing 😜😜😜😜, delighted that I hit a crisp 6iron to the back of the green. We were joking that on a day like today a score like 10 could be a winner, I was more than happy to score 21pts, but I threw away an awful lot, but was happy with a lot of shots I did play, especially happy with my short game and around the greens.

Plenty to work on ahead of the next outing to Portmarnock.

A great start to hopefully another great year for boards.

Well done to fix again for your win, and to the other prizewinners. Really enjoyed out on the course with our group, and thanks once again to captain and the committee for organising today.

See you at the next event

Thanks to Captain Alan and all who helped organise a really enjoyable and really well organised day. Congrats to @FixdePitchmark on the win.

First Boards outing for me and it didn’t disappoint. Great company in @boccy23 , @benny79 and @Snackbox20 - very welcoming and some moments of great golf. If a few close putts had dropped @benny79 could have challenged for the win. Had a great run of pars that I might have spoiled by mentioning near the turn!

@boccy23 played some great golf and look forward to seeing him on a course where driver is in use - drove really well today. @Snackbox20 chipped beautifully- can definitely pick up some tips there.

For my own game - it was my first time playing a links course after taking up golf in ‘23 and in truth don’t think I’m at the level required for it just yet. When you’re a little wayward you’re punished quite hard. Even some shots which connected well can disappear when you’re hitting blind! Still really enjoyed the day. Front 9 is really beautiful, back 9 not quite at the same level but stiIl some lovely holes.

Settled my first tee nerves with a GIR but followed with 3 putts! Highlight of my round was a two on the par 3 4th after sinking maybe an 8/10 footer uphill. A nice up and down for a point on 8 after finding water with the first shot. Had a nice two putt on par 3 17 after my approach went on the top level and nearly had to putt 90 degrees away from the hole and sink a long second one.

Despite my poor scoring had a really enjoyable day. Looking forward to the next one in Portmarnock , might put the child of Prague out and hope it’s not too windy!! Thanks again all.

That was challenging. Haven't played many times in wind stronger than that, and I really struggled as I tend to put the ball up in the air with all my clubs. I was striking the ball well, but it was just being destroyed by the wind. The par 3 7th was the worst, hit a lovely PW about 50 yards right of the green, only for the ball to end up in the water 50 yards left of the green. Crazy ball flight. Worst was the 15th though, and not cause of the weather. Hit a beautiful drive, down the middle, to 100 yards. It then took me another 5 shots to get the ball in the hole. I did have a few putts lip out, so feel like I left a lot of points out there (like I'm sure we all did). 25 points in total, which is about fair for how I played.

Corballis is an odd course. I switch between thinking it's fine, and kind of hating it 😂 It's an odd design, with some poor holes mixed in with some pretty good ones, with a lot of forgettable ones inbetween. I do enjoy the 2nd, 3rd and 4th. Won't even mention the mess of the 15th/16th holes.

The company, as always at a boards event, was fantastic. Played with bohtoffee and truedub. First time with truedub, and hope to see him back at more events. Like me, he struggled with the conditions, and lost a few balls. But had some lovely approach shots and shirt game was mostly good. Bohtoffee is a big hitter, and is quite good at keeping the ball low under the wind, a shot I really need to get into my bag. Was great seeing the distance he could get even into that wind. Thanks to both the lads for making what could have been a terrible round, still be very enjoyable.

Think I'll likely miss Portmarnock, but looking forward to the next event.

I wasn't sure what to expect from Corballis - lots of opinions, both good & bad, were flying around, but I decided I'd make up my own mind as I went around.

Yuck. I've never liked courses that have criss-crossing, and this started early with @BohToffee helpfully grabbing my arm on the first hole to stop me walking straight in front of another group. The blind shots and hit-and-hope areas on some holes don't suit my game (which is nowhere near precise enough to cope), and I found it tough to cope with the conditions too. Without the advice of my playing partners I could easily have shot 1000!

I was lucky enough to play with @BohToffee and @Kiith , and really enjoyed their company the whole way around. We had a number of laughs as we progressed, not least on the 15th fairway when I managed to hit myself in the mouth with my own divot.

Part of the appeal of the Boards society for me is playing new & different courses - many thanks to @Alanm and the rest of committee for their hard work organising this outing and all the others during the season. I'm hoping to play as many as I can.

    Win at last

Well at last, after over a decade of trying, got a win. Haven’t played well for 2 or 3 years at this stage . but this season put some good, winter work in.

I was never a golfer able to get in the 40  + points – and was probably off a handicap I was never particularly competitive off – but I was always able to get to mid 30s – on tougher days hang in there and be in the top 5 .  I also tend to have a better front nine – a thing that can cause you considerable pain in society golf.

The week was a mad one – been working 8 days straight – then a problem in work meant that I had to do a night prior to the game – not exactly ideal preparation – little or no sleep, no warm up.

But – at least it was Corballis – a course I genuinely know backwards and have probably played it 200 times + (even if I was never a member). Wind was another big advantage - I basically play hockey, not golf.

A group from Boards here, play a bit over the winter – and Corballis became a sort of spiritual home – reason being, it is always open , very cheap and very fast. Do you want to be out on a 6700 yard + course in deep winter ? – ice on greens and gale force wind. A quick run around meets the needs of a year round golfer, when in mid winter.

But – it is as some have described, marmite , too hard, too slow , crazy golf . It is not a golf course that fits into any normal category. That in itself is a charm to me. I like Links , I like variety , I like doubt and unpredictability. I also like fast short golf.

One of the best rounds I ever had – was a 69 in Corballis – was probably playing the golf of my life at the time – but you still have to have every bounce go your way – as at that place a foot here or there is death. I love that edge of seat golf – that needs control and course mgmt.

But back to Saturday – so in a daze between sleep and awake, I hit the first tee – was with a fine group for the day – Golfgraffix / blue note / VW1 . All great ball strikers, with very different games – the joy of amateur golf. On the 2nd tee, I said to them all – this is the big dog group. Blue note – has had fairly epic scores in the society – so I was interested to see his game . His ball flight is incredible and very suited to a real target golf style – I’ve seen VW1 hit the ball and he also fantastic athleticism. Golfgraffix has transformed his game over the last year – he was know as a player with an extraordinary short game – but has transformed himself into an all round real serious player.

And then you see the sea – what a run from 2 to 7 – as good as anything out west – but just a slightly smaller scale. I was hitting the ball well – but got frustrated with the lack of reward , the mats to grass tee boxes to unusual tee locations – didn’t really suit me. And the round was getting away on me. ‘Graffix was off to a flyer – such control and calm and game plan and focus. Amazing to see by the contrasting wild Irish sea.

As I stood up on the 4th tee – for as far as you could see, you could see golfers all over the place / the sound and the navigation and views of the course was fascinating to see. What a mad place – also golfers are mad. I’m one of them too.

Blue note and VW1 were a bit wild at the start – but good shots were interspersed by despair – but at no point, did they lose their calm and cool demeanor.

As for me and Golfgraffix (another tale) – the calm was at times like the sea – not calm (lol) – we go back a long way at this stage – and over the years we have developed a sort of false rivalry. We have had fantastic matches at boards events and away from it. I’d say it is fair to say he has a slight edge on me with wins – but when we are both at our best – it is as tight as Corballis. Me a stronger long game, him a much stronger short – it creates a great match dynamic.

But – whilst I was hitting the ball great – it was Corballis and as we know,  a foot here and there – it is a scratch , I wasn’t being rewarded in my mind. But at the same time – everyone was saying 30 pts is a great score – considering the wild day that was in it.  No matter how poor, or what form I’m in , I can still always get into the 30s.

I still made a few mistakes and school boy errors – a bit of mental fatigue. But I got to the 30 –  and there was definitely more in the can.

Happy out to get the win in Alan’s year – a really terrific bloke, who is a wonderful golfer, with great humility. He has traits we could all learn from.

The society is such a different place to normal golf. It in theory is just about golf. But when you meet up with people, you see it is a bit more. It is golfers who want to go on a bit of a golfing journey, an odyssey, an escape – a discovery.

Fair play bluenote and VW1 – for putting up with me and Golfgraffix, pretending that the match we were in, was more important than life and death. But we all know that golf is not just about who wins. It is about a shared journey – a discovery of somewhere new. And maybe that odd shot that can genuinely surprise yourself – and call you back to this game and the society and something in yourself.

Thanks for the great prizes Alan , and I’ll have a little memento of a beautiful engraved Galway tumbler to enjoy a wee drink – I can reflect on the views on the 4th on that day – and also a nice memory on the last decade of a truly extortionary golf journey with many very special golfers and more importantly, great people.

Would be interested to hear how people found the conditioning and presentation of the course on Saturday, especially from those who have played the course before

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,043 ✭✭✭✭FixdePitchmark

It was actually a bit better than I expected. You also have to keep in mind that this year is the worst conditions I've seen on nearly all courses and it is still very early in the year of a very very bad year. Will be a completely different place late May.

The positives - great to see sand bags out - if still limited use by course users

Greens still in ok to good condition - if not their best.

    Negatives

We had to have placing - but the divots around the place are still bad - but you got to think not just the courses' responsibility but - bad golfers with no respect.

Season relatively close - want to get a move on with whatever is happening on 5 and 7 and 8 and 9 , - the loss of the real 8 is a disaster.

Mats not great on tee boxes - let that pass - but it is April next week.

A few bunkers look structurally collapsed . poor condition.

Overall - it looks like there is too much golf going on - but I would add - that course with serious greens fees and subs - have very similar issues.

Congrats Fix! Glad you had a win at last, your ball flight is and links experience made you a very good candidate.

I really enjoyed it, I think my most enjoyable round of golf in the last 8 months, definitely best weather I have had. My golf is still horrible but I had some decent holes and a few good shots. The best part was the company with @willabur and @pakman, really good folks and golfers, but neither of us had our day.

And we are off! The mighty Corballis. I have a love hate relationship with this place having played it loads at this stage. I still struggle to remember holes as my playing partners will contest @Snackbox20 @Sorbet @boccy23 as the 1 hole I explained to them which I think was the 11th dog leg right.. There was a bunker in the distance which was GUR and a white line around it as I told the lads in get detail just left of that is a good landing area which will leave a wedge in.. Thankfully none of them listened 😂 and all went right except me! when I got up there ball was nearly OOB in the **** 🤦‍♂️ Dont know what hole I was thinking off! 😂 but definitely cost me a shot was lucky to find it but could only hack it out...

I purposely left my driver at home as having coming second here last year with only 3 clubs I know Corbellis is a course where you have to be strict on your course management! I wasn't playing great on front 9 with loads of 1 pointers. Then I went on a run of pars just at the turn and got myself in the mix! Standing on 18th Tee with 28 pts I said a bogey here will get me 2 pts and in the mix but personally wanted to hit 30pts as I taught that was a great score considering the conditions.. Greenside in 2 with a tricky chip to a tight pin (going for the hero shot) instead of playing the percentage 🤦‍♂️ I'll never learn! fell a yard short and down the bank which ended in a scratch for second year in a row the 18th cost me dear!

So the love hate relationship continues But I had great laugh with the lads and always good to meet new lads, new personalities. Some great golf was played in parts by all.. But the conditions where really tough..

I'm not a fan of mats and taught the conditioning wasnt near as good as previous years the amount of pitch marks on the greens was shocking!

Well done @FixdePitchmark! At least I dont have to listen to you say its impossible for me to win a boards outing now! 😂😂 Delighted for you! True veteran of the society. A boards win is hard!

    See you all at Portmarnock!

After playing Corballis in benign conditions 3 or 4 times, I finally experienced it in the wind. Some experience. Over the opening 6 holes we were treated to a clinic on how to play the game in the wind by Golfgraffix as he got off to an electric start. Some good natured slagging on how he has changed as a golfer as he elected to go with an iron on the third instead of a driver as Fix and Blue Note did.

I struggled with making good clean shots, but managed to come out of the front 9 in good shape with 15 points having not played my best at all. I was sinking some good putts which made the difference. Those first 7 holes really are a treat, and the high point of the course for me. 8 is a bit of a let down with the green condition, just doesn't roll correctly. 9 and 10 are both nice holes, but I think from 11 on are considerably weaker than the preceding holes.

My scoring collapsed as my ball striking really let me down on the back 9 - was struggling to make any good contacts and couldnt get anything going despite trying to maintain a positive attitude and not to get frustrated. Went around the back 9 for a shocking 6 points to give a total of 21 for the day.

Fix really came into his own on the back 9, some really excellent and consistent ball striking, was a pleasure to watch. Having hung in a bit and kept himself in the mix on the front 9, he got the foot on the gas and powered on. Delighted for him to get the win, I only found out after he won the prize that it was his first boards win - something that shocked me as I've played with him a couple of times and always been impressed by his game.

Blue note was a bit up and down like myself, some really lovely shots and impressive length, but with such a high ball flight it always looked tough to have control in winds like that.

That said, was a pleasure to be out with the lads, some good craic and banter and chat the whole way round. High points for me were fix's driving and golfgraffix wedge play, he truly is spectacular from 100 yards and in which his pair of 2s will attest to.

Onwards and upwards and looking forward to portmarnock.

Firstly congrats to @FixdePitchmark on his first win after many a boards voyage, a great character in the society that I love to bump into in the days out and nights out! And especially the very short synopsis after each round always a great read!

I was more than delighted in coming 3rd place myself and I thought I finished with 30 also, and held the clubhouse lead for a good 30 minutes until I rechecked my card and it was actually 29 so 2 ahead of me for a finish! What a tough day it was and I have played it a few times before but only for roadrunners Steady advice on hitting the collection points for a lot of holes the score would not have been in contention so thanks 👍

I scratched the 3rd hole from loosing 2 tee shots but other than that had very a steady 16 points turning , I scratched the Par 3 13th then aswell and really don’t know how you can hold that green on a day like Saturday , I aimed 20 yards left and the ball kept turning over to land way down under the next tee box…. I hit a great 4 hybrid tee shot on 14 and still had 200 yards to the pin which I pulled way left and bladed a chip through the green ended up making a 6! I think I was tiring a bit after that as I could have scored better but just hit a few silly chips etc… that I wasn’t doing earlier in the round. 15&16 are a bit of a joke having to wait for golfers to casually stroll up looking for a ball while you wait what seemed like 10-15 minutes( not our own society members) The 17th is a hard green to hit on a calm day I’d imagine but I was perplexed when I came up as short as I did after hitting a solid shot!

I hit a good drive on 18 and again a 9iron only 100 yards out left me way short ! Finished with 2x 5’s and happy to get in after 4 hours 53 minutes of golf!!!

Thanks to my playing partners @Break80 , @awec and @RoadRunner a sound bunch but we didn’t get any time to have any sort of general chat because of the conditions.

On the course condition , I find it very hard to complain after what seems like a very long winter and really wet conditions at home, it was actually a pleasure to play off that surface for me and have nice rolling greens. The mats were probably my only bugbear on big tee boxes that some portion can’t be used.

Looking forward to Portmarnock and hopefully kinder weather…..

Got to start off with a big congrats to @FixdePitchmark , 30 points on a day like Saturday is some shooting!

I suppose I'll start with my thoughts on Corballis. This was my first trek around it. I honestly do not know how you could score anything half-decent on this course if you didn't have a guide with you who had played it before to tell you how to play. There are so many quirky holes it is unbelievable. If we didn't have RoadRunner in our group to give us an idea of where to hit it we would have been all over the shop.

I have to say I didn't massively enjoy the course overall, but I guess that was also partly down to the winds. I wouldn't mind playing it on a calmer day where the wind doesn't have such a say in things to see how it compares then. The front 9 is much, much better than the back 9 IMO. Particular low-lights for me were the 11th, which IMO is just a stupid hole. There's a marker to aim at if you want to go for the green, but you literally have to make the green or you're fcuked, anything short is high chance of a lost ball. The entire hole is a blind shot, honestly if there was a 4 ball of Corballis newbies it's hard to see how you could play this hole.

The 13th I also thought was fairly meh purely because of the green. You could land the ball lovely on the green and it'd still just roll off. The wind killed me on this hole, I aimed about 45 degrees left and I still ended up at the bottom of the slope on the right. 15 and 16 are a bit of a shambles, it's like teeing off into a field with groups of golfers all over the place, people going up and down both fairways.

I am going through a swing change right now, went for a lesson last Wednesday and he's changed my swing to try move me to a draw shape from a fade shape. Which meant I wasn't confident in my miss, I could miss in either direction, really not what you need at a course like this. Definitely mentally affected me and hit my confidence a bit on each tee-box, as I tired near the end I started to revert to my old bad swing.

I started the day off well, par on the first. But then lost my ball on my 2nd shot on the 2nd which was frustrating. 3 is a great hole, but I really misjudged the size of the green and the distance of the flag and I left myself with an enormous putt, nil points. I was happy enough with how I went for the first 8 holes, then I put 2 in the water at 9. 😂 10 points for the front 9, I was actually happy enough at this point.

Back 9 I totally fell apart though. Bogey on 10 and 11 but then I scratched 12, 13 and 14. 12 frustrated me as in hindsight it was a handy par 5 to score on, just a few errant shots from me. 13, as already mentioned, was far too hard in those conditions. 14 the wind killed me again.

17th hole baffled me a bit, I hit an 8 iron I think and was worried it might be too much, ended up being waaaay short. Managed to get a point on this hole and 18, bringing my back 9 total to 7 points for 17 overall. Many points left behind me, many from my own mistakes but also others due to not knowing the quirks of Corballis.

Sounds like a lot of ranting but I really did enjoy the day out, I went round with a great group. Well done to @a post punk , consistently played well and kept the score ticking over with no fuss. @Break80 had a tough day at the office also, I think he struggled with the course and the conditions like myself. @RoadRunner had a really strong front 9 but the back 9 hurt the final score.

It was a very slow round, lots of waiting around, I think I was a bit mentally checked out a bit near the end.

Looking forward to Portmarnock, looking forward to getting out on a links course again!

Another round in Corballis getting beaten up, as usual, playing links. I'll eventually play a good round there but for the weekends conditions I can't complain with 25 points. The company was excellent with @jarrieta and @willabur and the weather was fantastic even with the winds blowing so hard. Started off well with 2 pars and followed up with a perfect drive on the third, a layup and then a total lapse that had my PW shot dangling in the air against the wind only to drop into the thick rough. A few frustrated swipes later and I was scratching the hole. That was the story of the day really, some great play followed immediately with bad judgements in the wind which costed me dearly. 15 and 16 were perfect example where I was 4 foot away putting for birdie on 15 and it just wobbled past and then after a great drive leaving me only 150yrds into the 16th I pulled it hard left and came away with a 6. Another 6 followed from pin high on the next hole, the head completely gone.

The two lads had a mixed bag much like myself. @willabur guiding us around the course and hitting some great shots, the type you would expect from a player of his class. @jarrieta had a rough front if I remember correctly with a case of the rights but scored some good numbers on the back nine. Happy to get out and really enjoyed the course as much as it abuses me and looking forward to Portmarnock.

Edit: Congrats to @FixdePitchmark too. I said to the lads on the second tee that it was a day that suited your game and happy to be proved right.

Some great reports guys. Delighted to hear @FixdePitchmark got his win at last. Congrats buddy. Sounds like a mixed report for Corballis. I think some great holes, but agree with some of the criticisms of the weaker holes such as 13, 15&16.

sounds like the weather played it part on the day. If it’s any consolation, the sun is hiding in Dubai and there has been a splash or 3 of rain. Still shorts and T-shirt weather thankfully though.

    And we're off.

Firstly huge congratulations to @FixdePitchmark on breaking his duck after so many years. 30 pts was very impressive around that course with the conditions.

I wasn't expecting anything from my round with my high ball flight.

I wasn't disappointed, absolute carnage, I should have walked off as I was a serious danger to anyone within 400yds. Play it right, lost on the left, play it left, lost on the right. Wind drops just as you hit, lost again. Absolutely mad stuff. I felt the course is too short and tight when the wind is up as much as Saturday. A bigger course would be more forgiving IMO.

Post punk,Roadrunner, and Awec were great company and all had a better grip on proceedings than I managed. We all could only smile walking off 18.

Portmarnock is another course that gives me a good trashing but looking forward to it already.

1 point lads, myself and Post punk had to sort the cards to speed up proceedings after the round.

A few had scores but no points. Could eveyone please spend a bit of time after their round and do the points in a clear readable manner.

Bold round circle on any 2s. It's a big help to anyone doing the cards as they need to eat and get home as well. Thanks.

    See ye soon.

And so another season of Boards golf kicked off in a blustery but sunny Corballis on Saturday. As someone who had never played there or even be in the area, I was half convinced the SatNav had a dose of the yips when it sent me on the M1 and not straight down towards Portmarnock. Slightly concerned I continued and arrived in what is a little golfing mecca, 4 courses in a couple of square miles. But as you play the day in Corballis, you can see how some of the holes have been shoehorned in to this small footprint.

Climbed out of the car and the door was whipped away nearly breaking my arm and also just missing the paintwork of the car parked next to me. I knew immediately that this was going to be a very hard day. It was the first time I have ever played where you were constantly being buffeted on iron shots and putts and where the ball was moving around on the greens so much. 'Twas a hard one lads!

I had the excellent company of @Snackbox20 who I had played with before, @benny79 for the first time and @Sorbet who was a first timer for the society. Always enjoy Snacks company but he was very unlucky on the day with lost balls, especially with second shots. Highlight was a hybrid which faded onto the pin on the 12th only to disappear over the back. I asked what he hit and why? I had 174 according to the laser, looked ay watch and I had it as 140 yards!! Never found the ball and sort of summed up his day. Benny, as he said himself, although having played it, was a bit like ourselves in trying to remember the lines, how far the trouble was and what to hit in that wind. Started well but then was very consistent - but with 1 pointers. Sort of gave up but the pressure came off, and he started to play good golf. Just a little unlucky with a shot here and there or he could well have troubled Fix. Sorbet is only playing a year and did really well for such inexperience in golf let alone links golf. i would consider it a huge win to hit the green with his iron off the first. i think I barely made it off the tee box the first time out. The highlight was a two on 4 after a nice wedge and drained the 20 footer. In the 2s on his first outing!

For myself, I aimed right on the first thinking the wind had to bring it in. No, it stayed straight as a dye into the bunker. Splash out and 2 putt, so 2 points to start. Nice! Onto the second and met @Break80 coming off the second tee. "Good luck" says he, "first one hooked massively OB and the second hit in the same spot is now on the dunes on the right". I had a look at the daunting tee shot and took a 7 iron to get to the top of the hill, wind caught it and it bounced down the hill to the Donabate beach! Looked at the Stroke Index and saw I had no shot! Christ I said, if this is the second easiest hole on the course, what the f**k and I am in for. Third went the same way and I still had 2 points after 3. Standing on the mat for the 4th, I was thinking that 10 points could be good, not to mind breaking 20! But a flick with a 52° and 2 putts I had a par and that gave me some confidence. Turned with 15 points and was thinking, ok, lets see what we have here. But too many 3 putts on the back 9, three, and a few mental errors in the wind meant I finished with 27. Proud of the score when seeing what else was out there, but also thinking that with a few better decisions/swings, it could have been a few more. No doubt we all had the same thoughts on the drive back home.

Over to Balcarrick for the post mortem, and a lovely dinner of Bacon & Cabbage (country boy after all!), and realised that this was an event that we will share for some time, "do you remember Corballis in 2024, that wind!!". But that is what this society for me is all about, it is the shared experiences, the much varied backgrounds, guys driving for 5 hours to attend with on-line friends, seeing familiar faces and hearing familiar slags, fivers won and lost and new blood being indoctrinated at each outing to breed continued vibrancy into the "club". I was chatting with a true dub at the bar and he said "ye're an online society - that's mad, how do you make it work?". And that is down to the likes of captain @Alanm who was there to meet & greet everyone. Thanks for the great day and looking forward to the rest of the golfing year ahead of us.

Final word for @FixdePitchmark who so deserves to enter the winning circle in Boards. He is passionate not alone about this society, but also about golf being a game for all, that it should always be about getting better, not settling for what you have today and most of all, it is a social experiment where we can spend a whole day with fellow madmen in 40 MPH winds, being blown off course all in the name of Golf and The Boards Society! Congrats.

Firstly and big congratulations to my good buddy Fix, and absolute disgrace that he has not won at least one event in all the years he has played, in saying that he not winning has been a great source of amusement.

That was deffinately a game that got away, started like a train over the 1st 6 holes, really should have been one under gross for the 1st 6 but was happy to be 1 over with two 2s in there.

Was tipping away nicely until the 8th hole, when we were waiting on the tee for what seemed and age, I have a problem (my own, no ones fault) with waiting, ended up rushing my drive, walked off with a 5, that felt like an 8. That was the start of my downfall, got a little (a lot) annoyed with myself and played poorly coming in, while still hitting good shots. I have been working very hard on the process side of the game and trying to keep my decision making clear and for the most part it has been working but I let myself down on Saturday.

All in all I really enjoyed the round playing with BlueNote and VW1, both of whom have tonnes of good if not great golf in them but like us all, it just needs to all come together on the right day.

Looking forward to the next round at my home course. The 6 new holes from last year and the new 17th (opening in two weeks) will all be in play, will be curious to see how the scores pan out.

We are off on running for 2024, have a great year captain.

Apologies for the delay in getting the results up lads - life has been a little hectic. Congrats to everyone on getting around Corballis, it was probably the most challenging round I've had there and like a few in the society, I've played it quite a few times (not nearly as many as Fix though...). At least it remained dry (thanks @benny79!)

First off; hugh congratulations to the winners:

    1st & Gross: @FixdePitchmark

    2nd: @bakerbhoy

    3rd: @a post punk

NTP: @jarrieta and LD: @BigChap1759 (I'll give you guys prizes at the next outing)

@Seve OB will help sort out the final leaderboard and the 2's once he's back from not sunning himself in Dubai.

I really enjoyed the company of @charlieIRL, @token56 and new member @go1f.

My own round was very mixed, some really good stuff surrounded by some of the worst golf I've played in a long time. Going at the 3rd green with a 3 wood in that wind was just stupid (scratch), followed by scratching the next two still thinking about the 3rd! Did have some highlights, 3 birdies, including back to back on 13 and 14.

Some great reports so far, thanks for them all. Looking forward to seeing you all in Portmarnock Links next month. Thread for this will be opened soon.

    Alan.
