I just realized I've never seen a pig. Anybody here work in a pig holocaust camp? How bad is it?

A guy I know is a truck driver. One of those lads that picks and drops trailers to places, could be anything. One day he had to bring a trailer of pigs to the factory. The trailer had to go back so he had to stay for it to be offloaded. Got a small bit of a view of the inside while he was waiting.

The same fella would be mostly a meat eater. Like myself, would be disgusted if his dinner didnt have some sort of meat. He went off Pork straight away after that day. Not a sausage would he eat. When we asked him why he just told us the story about dropping the trailer and the offer of the tour of the facility and nothing else. literally wouldnt say another thing, so there ya go....

One thing that suprised me about pigs in real life, is how **** massive the things are. They are not the cute little fellas you read about to your kids. They are huge.

There is a theory that humans are not the result of a line of evolution from primates. But that we are a hybrid species of primate and pig. Because the pig and the human share so many characteristics. And a lad in America got a pig kidney recently.

I gave up eating them a few years ago, there aren't really any pork products I would miss. The suffering they endure in pig farms in Ireland and elsewhere is shameful. A friend of mine's father had pig farms in Leitrim, he always describes it as auschwitz for pigs, just horrible, although he still eats pork somehow.

I was in Wiltshire recently and saw a few pig farms while driving around where the pigs were outside, had loads of space, and a little house each, or maybe a few shared a house. Didn't look so different as to how cows are raised here, I'd be more inclined to eat pigs raised that way if I wanted some bacon or whatever.

There's a film that came out recently called Pignorant, which investigates the brutality they endure, that is supposed to be shocking. Wont be watching it any time soon though as I'm sure it's tough viewing.

Yeah OP you’ve highlighted the major problem of pigs in Ireland - that lack of outdoors - it’s does happen in the UK too BTW but there seems to be a lot more free range free roaming pigs there than there is in Ireland

I’d much prefer to see higher prices and happier pigs than cheap food TBH

Tbh lads I’m absolutely certain that anyone eating them doesn’t give a toss for the argument about the intellect of any animal, regardless of species.

But the reason we give out stink about animals we treat as pets being eaten in other countries is obvious - cultural differences. Although now I think of it, it’s even more specific than that - certain parts of cows for instance are eaten in some countries whereas we’d probably be horrified if we were presented with it!

The point is often made that if any of us saw where our food originally comes from and the processes it goes through before landing on our plates, we wouldn’t eat it. But that argument ignores the reality of thousands of years of agriculture. Though I haven’t plucked a pheasant since I was a child, and it’s been years since I ate pigs tongue, not like I’ve gone out of my way to look for it either.

Ahh I didn’t mean for you to think you’d to justify your own thoughts or actions SB, I certainly don’t feel the need either myself. The point I was making is just that people don’t care about how intelligent animals are or how they’re treated before they become food. More often they care about how their food is presented and tastes, than how it’s processed, preserved, packaged or prepared.

I’m aware of the vegan arguments and while they absolutely make sense (except for the ‘members of our moral community’ one, that’s just preaching), they’re just not very persuasive arguments for anyone who doesn’t already share their perspective.

A cousin of mine lives near Mitchelstown and went on a school tour in 1st year of a Galtee processing plant where they make the sausages. They brought the class through the whole process from start to finish, showing the pigs being brought into the abattoir from the farm, to murdering them and butchering them and finally to finished product, them juicy sizzley sausages.

No joke but he became a vegetarian that very day. To be fair to him, he turned from being a fat 13 year old into a healthy looking young man the next time I met him and he told me the story.

I'd wager I could easily go through that slaughter and still relish having pork sausages on my plate. Fu*king love sausages.

Why do you not eat much meat anymore? Is it because of what you've seen, the cruelty in Factory Farming?

Indeed people should do their own research which if they did would very quickly tell them humans are genetically closer to bats, rats and rabbits than they are to pigs. And cows, horses and dogs

The poster didn’t at any point make out that any organism should be entitled to more rights than another, that’s the situation that exists already where human beings, by virtue of being human, are considered of greater value in society than other animal species. Frankly I’m ok with that, but I can understand the point the poster was making that animal welfare should mean that animals are treated equally to humans. I don’t agree with it, but I understand where they’re coming from.

Neither the other poster, nor I, made any mistake, evidenced by the poster above making the point that studies now tell us plants and fungi feel pain.

The selective line is drawn at 'some' sentient beings. They don't seem to care too much about those that are killed off in the growing of vegetables/fruits etc. and/or the numbers that would be killed if they got their wish of everyone being forced to eat a strict vegan diet.

Just bear in mind, that video is based mainly in the US, where animal welfare standards are lower than the EU.

I grew up on a farm, we had sheep and cattle. We got out of sheep in 2006, and to this day I can't eat lamb. My dad is the same, apparently is fairly common with sheep farmers. The taste of the meat is very similar to the smells when you work with sheep. Sheep were a lot of work, but I do miss the lambs playing around the farm in spring.

Only when we have stopped being cruel to our fellow humans should we really move on to worrying about cruelty to animals.

After all, Hitler was a vegetarian because of his concern for animal suffering and was often distressed by images of animal cruelty and suffering.

Near the end of his life, Adolf Hitler (1889–1945) followed a vegetarian diet. It is not clear when or why he adopted it, since some accounts of his dietary habits prior to the Second World War indicate that he consumed meat as late as 1937. 

We have to eat something though. The growing of grass, soy, animal feed etc. to feed to pigs and cows destroys even more insect life and biodiversity than what's required for a plant based diet, so if you're concerned with that kind of thing maybe think about going vegan.
