Resignation notice civil service

during probation, notice period is one week

HEOs and below are required to give 1 month's notice (as AO, you're equivalent to a HEO).

APs and above are required to give 3 months.

That was my experience in the civil service (not revenue)

I find that almost impossible to believe, tbh. I have literally never seen an employment contract that didn't cover notice periods. What does it say about the notice they're required to give you?

The answer is one week, but if you offer to stay on longer I’m sure they’ll appreciate it.

You may already be aware - However, if resigning from the civil service after less than 2 years service and have been a member of the current pension scheme (Single Public Service Pension Scheme), you are entitled to a refund of all your pension contributions.

(As a result you will, obviously, not be entitled to the associated lump sum and civil service pension upon retirement).

From a handover perspective, they’d prefer as much notice as you can offer.
As you’ve probably come to notice in your six months however, you’re really just a number and the only matter of importance for your employer is to avoid an overpayment caused by you leaving before you can taken off the payroll. As you’re paid fortnightly, they need about 2 weeks max to avoid any such occurrence.

Thats it though, most employment contracts lay out what the employer is required to give the employee. But very few will outline what the employee is required to give.

Its really just down to manners/not burning bridges. But in reality, an employee can send an email saying they're resigning from tomorrow.

Even if a contract specifies a notice period that an employee is required to give, very, very few are enforceable. Unless you hold industry secrets in a pharmaceutical company etc.

Say op leaves tomorrow are the civil service going to sue him? No. I've known people to resign from jobs at the drop of a hat.

Again, nothing stopping op doing same bar simple manners or perhaps not wanting to annoy future potential employers.

Legally though, they can fire away.
