Having been over par through the front nine a -1 opening round was decent enough.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,441 ✭✭✭dublin49

early in round but signs not good

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,932 ✭✭✭Trampas

Putter seems cold. I’d nearly prefer him to miss the cut than just plodding around the back of the field. Rest might be better for him. Spend an extra 2 days at home before heading to Singapore which seems crazy decision now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,269 ✭✭✭TheRiverman

He just can't do it, always falters when you think he's going to put a consistent good run of form together.

  • Registered Users Posts: 708 ✭✭✭bamayang

Strange comments here, he’s 5/6 shots back from the main pack (excluding the one bolter) on a pretty tough track, when the putter is cold. I would call that a good outcome

do people expect him to be top 3 every single week?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,441 ✭✭✭dublin49

both days has finished well so that augurs well,he missed a 3 footer for bogey early and I thought he might drop away but fair play hung in and good finish.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,269 ✭✭✭TheRiverman

No, and golf is a tough sport mentally at professional level, but there is an ongoing inconsistency in his game. Thankfully he has done enough today to make the cut.

  • Registered Users Posts: 708 ✭✭✭bamayang

Great finishing round. In good form the last month

100% ,should earn another circa 300K today bringing him over 2 mill in 3 weeks, sensational from where he was, hopefully he can now play where he wants and copperfasten his position at the top end of tour.Maybe falling out of the golden circle will give a wake up call that will work to his advantage longer term.

anyone know has Shanes recent good form played him into the field for the next signature at RBC Heritage Event.

He is currently in based on his Fedex ranking but there are 4 more weeks to go before the cutoff. Geting back into the top 30 of the world rankings after the Masters would also get him in.

I presume Shane committed to Singapore unaware of how well the last 3 weeks would go.Is he getting a shed load of money for his attendance or is it a sponsor commitment or what is behind this trip.Looks like a strange move given there is a more lucrative PGA Tournament available to him this week.

Not like Shane to play more than 3 weeks in a row, would not be surprised if he doesnt play again until Masters.

He'll have to skip it after winning The Masters

Said as much in his interview after Sawgrass. Wont play again until Augusta.

Tough conditions for the back 9.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,211 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Par 5's were Shane's problem today at level par on them. He finished -3, I'd guess the average for the par 5's was better than -2 for the top thirty. He'd be well up there if he had that score on them. Still he's right in it.

Birdie Fests not Shanes strongest suit,Par 5s play regularly lets him down.Nobody watching them, one thing about the PGA ,they get great crowds out.

Two doubles and will be early start tomorrow

Finds his feet and a bogey on last to ruin a perfect day

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,932 ✭✭✭Trampas

Did Shane does his usual form when gets close to top of leaderboard and gets nervous and drops back. -5 after 11 and then goes 3 bogies in a row. 2 of them par 5’s. Maybe he has a mental struggle when leading on a Sunday when starts looking at leaderboards. Swing goes a bit off. He just seems to be off when he’s in that situation when there’s a fight on to win. Not having a gap or players around not shooting birds

It got extremely hot when he was playing the 11th. He was visibly struggling with it. He wasn't the only one. While waiting to hit his second to the 12th he was down on one knee and drinking lots of liquid. It was very clear he was extremely uncomfortable. He hit an awful second to the 12th, way left and ended up bogeying the hole after being forced to take a drop. He followed that up with two more bogeys. He was never the same for the rest of the round, there was two guys on -14 and three others on -13 when he was playing 12, Micheluzzi, Del Rey, Sharma and Enoch all fell backward around the same time.

Should be consuming liquids constantly during the round and with salts. Drinking loads at one time is just going to flow straight through you. He’ll feel he could have won over last month.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,932 ✭✭✭Trampas

I see he’s dropped to 13th on the signature qualifying list. JT is 12th so a pick gone there if he doesn’t do enough to get into the top 10. I wonder will Shane get a pick or not if required

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,211 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

A good Masters will help I'm sure. Top 20 might be enough.

Looking forward to seeing how Shane tackles Augusta, I'd really give him a great shot at being in the running come Sunday evening

bogeyed 18 and 1st by leaving putts woefully short, needs to perform on par 5s today or unlikely to be around for weekend

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,269 ✭✭✭TheRiverman

Early in the day, but missing the cut is very likely.

The way the cut line is moving, he has every chance now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,269 ✭✭✭TheRiverman

Yes, looks like it will be +3/+4 so definitely a good chance for him now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,932 ✭✭✭Trampas

    +4 I wouldn’t be emptying out my locker. 3 is a safe

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,785 ✭✭✭abff

As he’s finished on +3, I think it’s safe to assume he will be here for the weekend. I think the cut could actually go to +5, but I guess that depends on how the wind acts up this afternoon.

Hopefully, Shane will do enough over the weekend to get him into the next Signature event.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,269 ✭✭✭TheRiverman

He definitely hung in there over those final holes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,441 ✭✭✭dublin49

hopefully they dont stop play as getting better for Shane by minute

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,932 ✭✭✭Trampas

His bogeys are from par putts trying to drop in. Playing like a player who’s no confidence with his putter as worried about the one back

What a fantastic shot on 14 for eagle.

Shane is literally where he should be ,makes cut but out it for final round, because hes one of ours we hope against hope that he will defy his standing and figure in the final shake up.Shane is a top 40/50 golfer in the world but he is not top 10,so he will generally struggle to make an impression at Majors unless he is on his A++ game or its a home fixture at the Open.

Shane out with Mickelson for final round, hopefully he beats him

what does he need to do today in terms of a finish that secures signature event invites?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,044 ✭✭✭paulos53

A lot will depend on how Nicolai Hojgaard performs today. If he drops a few places then a top 30 might be enough to get Lowry into next week's signature event.

Someone asked above ..but I'd always fancy him for an Open again..bad weather ..poor scoring and basically about strategy and getting up and down...

He does seem a bit more focused lately..hoping for a good season..

I would say, he could do with getting rid of the most cranky lad on a course image (him and hatton most notable ones ) ..he could do with dropping that crap.

Whilst entertainment..the majority of golfers don't like it and it's value to performance is very questionable...it just distracts from focus..

Watch the top guys today..very few are on emotional roller coasters..and if thry are , they don't show...as helps opponents too..Bryson probably a rare exception in top 10..

still trying to drop putts in. No commitment

When it comes to Majors, he is the greatest one hit wonder since Norman Greenbaum or Mungo Jerry 😂.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 191 ✭✭GolfPar

Major winner and a 2nd, 3rd & 4th place finish in the other 3. Definitely a one hit wonder.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,304 ✭✭✭big_drive

I'm confident he'll add another major over the next few years. As mentioned above he's finished high in all 4 at some point so his game is good enough in all types of courses and conditions.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,932 ✭✭✭Trampas

I can’t see him winning another major at the moment unless he’s out early and posts a score. He appears to me he’s a leaderboard watcher when at the top and games get a bit shakey when he’s in contention and drops a few shots and posts a good finish but wasn’t going to win it
