He didn't play against Leicester or the Bulls in the last fortnight but started the three game prior to that and has been training. Took a bang to the knee against Zebre and came off so I'd imagine that was a factor too although hard to know if he'd have been in the 23 against the Bulls regardless.

That's another reason why he shouldn't start. He could give 25 minutes off the bench though.

people like to write Connors off but he’s always performed well whenever he’s selected for big leinster games or Ireland games in the past. Personally I think he offers more than VDF against a team like LAR. Even having Doris at 7, Conan 8, Baird 6 would offer more. However, VDF would be a very strong impact sub when LAR are a bit more tired in the second half, he injects a lot of pace and urgency into Leinster.

The one thing I remember about last years final apart from the utter heartbreak was just how much LAR took the piss with their "injuries" and how much they were allowed get away with it. The broadcast didn't really do it justice but Skelton among others (including Dillane) spent several minutes on the ground for treatment.

I am under no disillusion that on pitch treatments are and will always be important due to the nature of rugby.

But what we're seeing more of now is the physio treatment for nothing other than a players lungs to get a breather thus allowing players who are far too large being able to play for far too long. Shed the weight and you'll get the fitness. Rugby Union has enough problems without allowing 150kg players dictate when they can rest so they can maximise the damage they inflict.

I think if you're getting treatment of any kind that lasts more than a certain amount of time. You get it done on the sideline and your team plays with 14 until the next break in play. If that treatment is for a prop and the next play is a scrum - its uncontested. Yes teams could game this. But it's primarily massive teams who love a shove that would be dropping like flies so uncontested scrums works against them.

We have the Dupont Rule. I'd love to now see the Skelton rule.

expect we will see loads of the same tomorrow.

It is within the ref's control to just keep play continuing if he wants. I feel like that used to happen more often.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,649 ✭✭✭arsebiscuits1

It is and we do see refs occasionally put the hurry up on physios etc which is good to see albeit rarely.

But refs being encouraged to put the hurry up on injuries could set a perception that they're overruling medical professionals treating an injury which is a bad look and something that I can see refs not doing as they're under enough scrutiny as it is.

Trying to inject pace in the second half is pointless when the other team is doing everything to slow the game down. Leinster need to bring the pace early and build a good lead. RAL specialise in turning the screw in the second half, Leinster need to be prepared to deal with it.

I don't think refs should hurry up physios, just ignore them and continue playing. You'll see the players hurry up the physios themselves.

In fairness to Karl Dickson I think he is one of the refs that does hurry such antics up. LaR are serial floppers around the ruck too but like any good team will continue to do so unless penalised. Mind you, it probably does take Uini Atonio and Big Willy Skelton longer than normal to heave themselves away….

One would presume Leo Cullen etc have an opportunity to raise such concerns with the ref in advance.

Tomorrow's match will be the 5th meeting between the sides in the 4 seasons. They know each other and how they play so well. I'm really looking forward to seeing what new tactical or selection decisions each team has in store for the other.

In last season's final Leinster caught La Rochelle out with some excellent set piece attacks. Whilst they caught Leinster out by using Skelton as a jumper when he hadn't been used at all for months.

In that final I got the impression that La Rochelle had firmly worked out Leinster's defensive system. We defended brilliantly near and in our 22, but they made so many metres from their 10 metre line onwards by just having big men run onto the ball at speed that the pressure eventually told. I'm hoping our new defensive system gives them pause.

We played at pace at the start of first half last year and went 23-7 up and that still wasn’t enough to win. We beat them with Connors in December so he starts in my books.

The ruck will be a different experience to previous games I think tomorrow also.

Lancasters tactic was completely leave it alone and get 14/15 men on their feet in the line.

Neinaber has introduced a much more combative ruck approach and really make the opposition work and commit bodies.

I think our old game plan lent to other teams flopping on our ruck - something LAR took the absolute piss out of.

Yes it's illegal but "inconsequental" to a ref as we'd still retain possession, albeit slower.

More bodies in the breakdown and contesting it more on both sides of the ball means it will need to be policed more. I hope us going after it more will bring more attention to just how much LAR take the piss with it

Aggregate score of the last 4 meetings is Leinster 86 - LAR 92.

Incredible that after 4 games the score is still a LBP worth of difference.

I also had to admire the utter deception used to lift Skelton. They didn't even strap blocks on him haha.

Leinster actually attacked the ruck more aggressively in the final too. Although it was with a view to poach the ball rather than counter ruck. That was another change Leinster made specifically for that game. It worked for the first half, but La Rochelle changed tactics in the second and we tired. Just wasn't as effective in the second 40.

At the ruck Leinster are pretty illegal as well. We'll really miss Ryan tomorrow as he has the ability melt one on his own.

    Team is out

Jenkins and Connors start and it's a 6-2 split. Sacrificing the lineout for more power. No Healy either so we're really hoping this doesn't develop into a slow, set piece battle.

The Lancaster game plan-Have as quick ruck ball as possible in attack, then never slow down the oppositions ball in Defence. Utterly bizarre viewpoint.

I know we hype up how big La Rochelle pack are. And other French teams.

But that Leinster starting pack is **** massive.

  • Registered Users Posts: 88 ✭✭Clontarf_Jazz

You'd have to fear for Leinster's lineout with that team. There's going to be huge pressure on Ryan Baird with 2 non jumping locks playing. They sure must be planning to keep the ball in play as much as possible. Harry Byrne must be sick as the proverbial parrot given how awful his bros was last W/E & what a limited player Ross is

  • Registered Users Posts: 17,169 ✭✭✭✭Clegg

Does Baird call the lineout for tomorrow? Murray Kinsella has been singing his praises all season for how much he has developed his game at the set piece. Will be a huge ask for him though.

Really like the look of our bench. Kelleher, Milne, Conan and VDF are all very impactful carriers. When to use the bench is something we've definitely improved on this season. Our subs took the game away from Bulls a few weeks ago and Conan and Kelleher made positive contributions against Leicester last week. In both finals against La Rochelle we didn't use our subs well enough. Distinct memories of McCarthy getting like 2 minutes off the bench in 2022 and Kelleher just 10 minutes in 2023.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,649 ✭✭✭arsebiscuits1

This is absolutely enormous chance for Milne.

Porter likely to go 70 but whatever time Milne comes on the pitch it will probably be the biggest test of his career thus far.

His scrummaging has greatly improved and his carrying an obvious strength. I have no reservations about seeing his name and this could be a real turning point for him.

  • Registered Users Posts: 197 ✭✭conquestscarer

Are Porter and Furlong the only players under 6'4?

  • Registered Users Posts: 341 ✭✭bingobango12

I can not f**king wait to get to Lansdowne tomorrow. Not been this excited for a match in a long time.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,649 ✭✭✭arsebiscuits1

Sheehan too. 1.91m on Leinster and Ireland sites which has him at 6'3" and those stats are normally generous

Just don't like the 6/2 split. It's just asking for trouble.

Connors obviously been kept on ice for this the last couple of weeks on the assumption we would be playing LAR.
