Review of Stereotyping on Boards

No harm in reviewing things, but whatever about a couple of years ago, resources now are gone beyond breaking point, so I don’t imagine there being much resources being available to carry out a review of something like is it 800 forums and counting at this point? Definitely want to skinny that down 😳

I know they’re just examples too but the first two examples you give, I don’t frequent either forum but perhaps context should be given consideration - the subtitles seem like an attempt to give a colloquial feel to the forums, intended to be less intimidating than more so.

The Gentleman’s Club, was intended to be the equivalent of The Ladies Lounge, and both forums were always open, welcoming and accessible to all. Personally, I suppose because I’ll admit to being sexist, old-fashioned and so on, the titles of both forums for me were part of their charm, and not something intended to be perceived as negative, or unwelcoming or inappropriate. Both forums are former shadows of themselves at the time when you would have originally made the point though. I didn’t frequent the Ladies Lounge all that much in any case, but recent discussions on hair loss and masturbation for example in The Gentleman’s Club make me think that the forum title is the least of its problems! 😒

I see nothing wrong with using a harmless old nursery rhyme about a garden for a light hearted gardening thread title. That said I've never seen that title in the Gardening Forum. There is a thread, last used 2011, for garden photos called How does your Garden grow? (no Mary Mary though). Can you link to the thread that offends your sensibilities?

Got it! In years reading the forum I've never even noticed it. Taking offence at any of those titles is absurd.

Seriously? They're quippy descriptors of forums, nothing more. Get over yourself.

I’m assuming they got it from the origins of Gentlemen’s clubs, 18th century British Empire stuff. That’s where I had always assumed the name of the forum came from anyway:

A gentlemen's club is a private social club. These clubs were started in England in the 18th century. They were originally reserved to the British upper class. At the start, they were only for men, women were not allowed. They were all originally gambling clubs.

I dunno what’s after happening tbh, the OP is after getting hopped off in the Feedback forum, when that’s exactly what it’s for - feedback, not a pile-on the poster raising the point.

I can see where they’re coming from too with ‘Handy Andy’, as though women don’t enjoy a spot of DIY, and the nursery rhyme that goes “Mary Mary, quite contrary, how does your garden grow?”, in terms of their sexist connotations. The Ladies Lounge has never had quite the same sexist connotations, as the term implied Ladies of the upper classes, similar to the idea of the gentlemen’s club. Ladies and Gentlemen, if you will, I’m sure we’ve all heard of it.

Seems people got awfully bent out of shape and defensive about it, which suggests the OP may well have a point, and it doesn’t require any stretch of an over-active imagination to see it, as has been amply demonstrated by many of the replies in this short thread alone.
