I heard the machine crushing what it did accept. Really if they were serious about the recycling BS they’d accept all and any cans and only return a deposit on recognised barcodes. It’s damn stupid otherwise.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,012 ✭✭✭Pen Rua

Then what is to stop a retailer failing to apply the deposit on a can, it being returned and a deposit being paid out?

We’re getting lucky for now on some old cans, but that will only last so much longer.

EDIT. I realise that actually is true now. Never mind. I blame the jet lag I’m experiencing. 😅

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,748 ✭✭✭✭Hotblack Desiato

Then you'll have it accepting things which aren't even PET bottles / aluminium cans, and contaminating the recycling.

    Scrap the cap!

If only people could be trusted to put the right stuff in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,709 ✭✭✭Citizen Six

So does it read the new symbol as well as the barcode?

I've got some cans with, and without logo, but the same barcode. And I've got a can with an additional sticker with the logo.

On top of that, the website says some cans sold without the logo are still applicable for the refund, for a short period.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,460 ✭✭✭Blisterman

It just reads the barcode. I've had cans without the logo accepted, and even a can with the logo rejected! Admittedly I bought that one in January and didn't pay the deposit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,012 ✭✭✭Pen Rua

The FAQs (and all the material) seem to specify the logo is needed, albeit during the transition period there will be logo-less products out there.

The machine seemed to scan just the barcode, since it accepted a logo-less (and deposit-less) Hazy Jane can from me yesterday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,012 ✭✭✭Pen Rua

The reverse vending machine specifications document gives some more colour.

    https://re-turn.ie/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/RVM-Specification.pdf

Para 3.1: Each container will have a DRSI approved logo on it to indicate its inclusion in the scheme.

Para 3.4: Barcode recognition is the main method of container identification. Containers will not be accepted without barcode recognition to validate the container. Therefore, all RVMs must be able to meet a number of criteria in relation to barcodes.

Para 3.9: The minimum recognition combinations for a container to be accepted by an RVM is: Barcode Recognition + Basic Shape Recognition + Weight Detection + Metal Detection.

Para 3.11: Logo recognition is not a prerequisite for the launch of the scheme. DRSI is looking to reduce the scheme’s exposure to fraud and may require Logo Recognition in the future.

So, the machines don't scan for the logo at all, only the barcode.

Packed up my stinky cans, went to my local Supervalu. Shutters down, so I asked about the machine, and was told it should be up and running in a couple of weeks.

Bit of a joke. They've had plenty of time to get ready for it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,012 ✭✭✭Pen Rua

Used that scanner tool on a few more pre-deposit cans. A Ska brewing can & Kinnegar's Brewers at Play low alcohol IPA both were accepted, which surprised me. I had thought the former, a US brewery, wouldn't bother and the latter, a one off, wouldn't be registered. We'll see does the actual machine take them.

Went to Tesco in Drumcondra, and all but one of my cans was accepted. I also had a couple of cans from december that were accepted. GBB Morning Afterglow was the one refused. Seems it's been out for about 8 weeks, but I only spotted it yesterday, and bought it. Unfortunately, the recycle bins at the back of the store don't have one for cans, just bottles.

As an aside, I noticed this thread will turn 4 years old at the end of next month... what a wild ride. From the depths of Covid and supporting small breweries / independent off licences, minimum unit pricing, proposed labelling changes, deposit return scheme and everything in between... quite the 4 years for beer in Ireland!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,748 ✭✭✭✭Hotblack Desiato

Quite the four years and not in a good way. Wonder how long it'll be before we get ration cards 😝

    Scrap the cap!

The Ska beer would have been registered with the scheme by its importer, Grand Cru.

Sorry if it's off topic for a recycling thread 🤣 but Treaty City Brewery have signed on as a sponsor for Treaty United FC (makes sense) and are doing pre match promos.

I'd say about half the LOI teams have a craft beer link of some kind at this stage. Sligo to White Hag, Finn Harps to Kinnegar, St Pats to Rascals, Bohs to Porterhouse etc

Being a youngish lad when Micky Martin brought in the pub smoking ban (which I agree with) I thought at the time that once they’d finished cracking down on cigarettes they’d turn to alcohol and, lo and behold, they have. We’re getting super frightening labels next aren’t we?

I somehow think the 6% and over sector will be next to be discriminated. I hope I’m wrong.

Hadn't been into my local supervalu in a while but it's always had a very good selection of craft beers(mostly Fourcorners distributed beers) including all the latest specials. The fridge was looking pretty boring and not one special in sight, just all core range stuff including 4 packs to fill out the space. Disappointing, hopefully just a temporary thing but only time will tell

I have a feeling that a lot of off licences don't want to be stuck with unbarcoded stock they won't be able to shift after May, so they're being very conservative with their ordering, until they clear the old stock off their shelves.

Worth noting that a lot of breweries will be in (or just finishing) St.Patricks Day prep at this time of year so will be focusing on getting pallets of their regulars shipped to Europe.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,012 ✭✭✭Pen Rua

Both Whiplash and Wicklow Wolf have free shipping from their webstores.

Very rarely in town these days, so headed to Against the Grain for the first time in a long time tonight. Shutters were down, so we went to the Beer Temple instead. Asked the barman there about Against the Grain, he told us it's closing down this week. Shame, it was always my favourite GBB pub, but I suppose if I haven't been there much lately, maybe a lot of others haven't been either.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,503 ✭✭✭Macy0161

I was only in there last week, and it was busy enough for early on a Wednesday evening I thought.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,709 ✭✭✭Citizen Six

I gave up on it a few years ago. Staff weren't very good at their jobs, and the place stank like a sewer.

Against the Grain was open over the weekend. So don't think that's right.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 11,927 Mod ✭✭✭✭BeerNut

It seems to be hanging on all right, though apparently there is another company ready to take over the lease.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,294 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Would be great if they kept things roughly the same but just not run by Galway Bay.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 11,927 Mod ✭✭✭✭BeerNut

Nah, it's going to be an Asian restaurant, I'm told.

Interesting as they only renovated it last year, and not for the better, either imho.

Might be a long shot, but I am assuming there are few to no venues / off licenses worth going to very close to Croke Park? Am up for work soon and staying close by, but am not fussed for the 30+ min walk to head into town-town for the likes of Craft Central, Underdog, Fidelity et al in the evening (public transport is not much quicker)

As an aside, I don't think Underdog actually state on their Instagram their address… so going off Google that it is indeed 199 King St N, Rotunda, Dublin 1, D07 PR5X.

Cat and Cage, Juno are the best options probably

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,709 ✭✭✭Citizen Six

Where's Juno? Haven't been to cat and cage in years, didn't know they had a good craft offering now. They do good pizza now too, right?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 69,733 ✭✭✭✭L1011

former Red Parrot on Dorset Street, just a little over the bridge - not sure how good or not the craft offering is, but it'll be more than the two taps in McGraths (O'Haras and Galway Hooker; and one of the staff appears to lipread O'Haras as Carlsberg!)

Martins in Fairview is about 10/15 minute walk from Croke Park

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,042 ✭✭✭youcancallmeal

The Big Romance is a good spot, only 5 mins walk to Croke Park

Thanks - we'll see how work goes and if I'm up to the walks out and about.

Here's a question for those more knowledgable than I...

I noticed Tesco have significantly different prices on gargle depending on whether or not the customer has a Clubcard; would the recent rule change about discounts on achohol not apply here?

No axe to grind one way or the other, just curious.

I remember my local offie having to do away with their loyalty scheme when all this came in and I was devastated ;)

Can't answer the legal question, but Lidl have been doing the same for months with wine with Lidl Plus. In both stores, they don't count for the points or x of €xx spend.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 9,722 Mod ✭✭✭✭Twee.

I think it's allowed because the discounts are available to anyone with a club card/app and they don't contribute to points schemes. There's no "rewarding" if that makes sense.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,042 ✭✭✭youcancallmeal

After several pre-match pints maybe it just feels like 5 minutes to me 😅

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,294 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

    Oh I know.

As a Limerick fan I have become a bit of an expert on the walk to Croke Park in recent times 🤣

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 11,927 Mod ✭✭✭✭BeerNut

It's a bit like the late-night pricing in pubs vs the happy hour ban: putting the price up for some people is legal, nay encouraged. As long as the Clubcard price is above MUP, it's legal. Discounts are only illegal when you have to buy more alcohol to get them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,230 ✭✭✭✭the beer revolu

So, in most bars, beer is considerably cheaper if you buy a pint rather than a half pint. Could this be illegal?

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 11,927 Mod ✭✭✭✭BeerNut

Nope, because it's a different product, not a cheaper version of the same product. Like how multipacks in the supermarket are cheaper per can than buying individually: it's allowed because it's a different SKU. Breaking the spirit of the law, I guess, but not the letter.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,230 ✭✭✭✭the beer revolu

Ah, I had hoped that this thing I've been banging on about for years may finally have some standing in law. The price charged in some places for a half pint is outrageous compared to the price of a pint of the same beer!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,808 ✭✭✭squonk

you’d think that discrepancy along with the high price of NA and soft drinks in bars would have been the first measures implemented by those who are so concerned for the nations health.

I picked up a can of Rascals’ Strawberry Milkshake IPA. I noticed it has a logo indicating it is vegan friendly, but the ingredients list mentions lactose.

I had thought lactose was derived from milk sugars. Is there such a thing as vegan lactose, or am I just putting my ignorance on show for everyone?
