I don't like the term far right. It seems if you call for an overhaul of the immigration and refugee system you are called far right or racist.

I think the European elections are the perfect place to vote for parties that want to control immigration.

You are not electing a government. Same for the locals.

Both councils and the European Parliament have limited powers. Very limited

Unless designated immigration control parties get elected the government will never take the issue seriously and just tinker with it

Justin Barrett is someone you could legitimately call the "far right" in this country. In the 2021 Dublin Bay South by-election, Barrett was humiliated, amassing a grand total of…183 votes. Here's my point: the actual far-right doesn't exist in this country as a serious political force. The European Elections would yield the same outcome. There is no broad appetite for far-right politics in this country.

    That's a good thing.

But the "far right" do not own the immigration debate.

The far-right typically argues against immigration from a wholly racial perspective. They just don't like people who aren't like "the natives". They are racist for that very reason.

Away from that racist trash, there are legitimate questions to be raised about the numbers of people the country can take and whether we have the services / policies in place tailored to meet those needs. In this case, there is no racial dimension. It's purely about pragmatic, economic, social, sometimes value-based considerations.

Some on the far-left try to deliberately conflate the two. This is done to shut down debate on the topic, so that anyone who raises any question — no matter how benign — is labelled as a fascist sympathiser in some form.

It's very dishonest, and intentionally so.

I don't expect the European Elections to yield the outcome you desire. Parties who speak about better controlling immigration may increase their share of the vote, but probably not substantial enough to shake the system itself.

parties that want to control immigration.

Who are you talking about specfically here?

National Party? Irish Freedom Party? Ireland First? John Waters?

Some of us are old enough to remember old socialist thought, that looked to keep a lid on immigration as it lowered wages because back then, meeting the needs of the blue collar workers was the premium party policy.

As for this debate, I sense more votes for candidates who espouse anti immigration views but not enough to get any of them elected, in the EU.

The locals, I'm not so sure, such is the level of discontent in pockets around the country.

This same poster is trying to implement some sort of Muslim ban in another thread, as well as posting content from recognised hate groups.

How much more of this BS can boards.ie users take?

I think there will be at least one far right MEP elected. Stranger things have happened. Most break throughs are never expected

    SF in 2020

The electorate almost elected an ex fianna failure in 2011 for **** sake

So I think waters has a chance or the Ireland first guy in the South

Dragging up Justin barrets poor result from years ago ain't relevant because a serious debate only started in the the last two years.

Anyway it's ultimately up to people to decide how to vote but realistically the government will continue to be legs open when it comes to immigration unless the far right makes a breakthrough. But people have their priorities
