Second-hand car question - Nissan and Renault

I am thinking about buying a second-hand car years 2015 to 2017. I am interested in Renault Kadjars and Nissan Qashqais (both models equipped with 1.5 dCI engines). Is this engine reliable?

I've found opposite options about them on the Internet, so I would like to have more information before I make the purchase.

Son has a Megane, Friends have a Duster and a Pulsar all well over 100000 kms and just servicing costs so far.

It's hard to say because I know people with different experiences… Do you frequently travel on the motorway? If not, I would NOT buy a car with this engine. As a lot of Diesel engines from these years are very sensitive and you can get issues with injectors and DPF… So, if you do not drive the car every week in a high speed it is more likely to experience problems… The engine itself is not BAD, but a lot of people face these issues. Maybe worth buying one of these cars with full service history and warranty. If you purchase it for smaller journeys I think it's too risky.

Both cars are cousins so share many parts including engines. My sister has a 2015 Kadjar with over 250k km on it and it's still going strong. She bought it for a good price from the company her husband works for. Car had one driver from new and came with full service history. Only complaint is the 19" tyres on it are expensive and ride is a bit hard so best go for one with smaller wheels if prefer a softer ride.

Thanks. I drive 45km on the motorway twice a week and I also make small trips on weekends.

I will pay attention to the service history of the car.

Those engines are ok with regular and proper servicing.

Seems like everyone wants these at the moment. Whenever I enquire about a medium/high spec one its gone. Plenty of base spec around though.

That sort of driving is not a good match to any diesel engine. They suit lifestyles dominated by long fast drives and tend to clog up if ran on small trips all the time.

  • had a Qashqai (granted it was 07), with 250k on clock when I bought it and 320k when it was sold on. From my understanding it’s still driving without any hassle for the fella who bought it.

Worked with a lad also who only ever bought Qashqai since the last 10 year or so. Every few years he trades up for the current model and he’s never complained about them so they must be reliable enough!

Have a ten year old petrol Qashqai, bought it six years ago, and it really is a brilliant car. Worth considering if you see one

1.2l engine with a turbo. There's a slight turbo lag when you try to accelerate hard but otherwise it's a great engine

Never had any bother with the car, really nice to drive, nice interior etc. it's not the most exciting car in the world but I'm delighted with it. In fact, my main issue is how good is is, I'm kind of pining a new car but can't justify it until something goes wrong with this one 🤣

I do not think you are going to face issues even with the small trips. Because your 45km twice a week is good enough to "regenerate" the system. You will be fine, no doubt you'll be happy with the car.

Thanks for that. What about fuel consumption? Do you consider it to be good? I am aware that fuel consumption may vary depending on the driver, but I would like to have just an idea.

I remember thinking it was very good when I got it but haven't thought about it much recently 😋

Fuel tank is apparently 55 litres (assuming Google was right there, costs about €100 to fill from empty so that seems right) and the dashboard display says about 730km when full, I think that's pretty accurate for my driving (usually about half hour journeys, don't drive much). Not sure how that compares to other cars

I have a 19 reg Kadjar since early 2022. very happy so far and no issues. Its a 1.5 diesel and is very fuel efficient and reliable. Have a look at realmpg on the honestjohn website to get an ideal of real world MPG but typically this gets 50-55 mpg mixed driving. Personally I found it a bit better in terms of fuel economy than similar sized Kia/Hyundai diesels which Ive had before. As with any modern diesel theres always the potential for DPF issues at some stage if taking a lot of short trips which modern diesels are not suited to.

that's not high mileage at all, you might be better off with a petrol car instead.

    Very fuel efficient.

    5. 5 lites per 100 km on average and 5.0 litres or lower on motorway.

I don't drive conservatively and I find it very good.

It's a common engine and can be found around the Peugeot Nissan and Renault cars and also the Mercedes A range.

Petrol car will be cheaper to buy and lower mileage
