Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

@OnwardsandUpwards from other discussions that were had on this thread, it doesn’t sound like they do. Rather, you are assigned whatever position is available when you complete clearance. Would be great to hear if anyone else here has expressed an interested to PAS in a department/area and was successful?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 96 ✭✭countyireland12345

It was an agency of one the Departments. I'd no interest in the role, the agency nor the Department really.

I understand that even the HSE operates panels differently, you are asked to express an interest in a vacancy, then the OOM kicks in, those who don't express an interest keep their OOM and stay on the panel for the next vacancy.

I expressed preference for my own department but on the Interdepartmental was offered a different one, now at the same time my local HR had not requested to keep me or had a vacancy so wasn't just PAS, local HR told me they do now have upcoming AP vacancy and did request to PAS to keep me if I am called on Open. But I will still wait and see what happens if this occurs.

But for anyone who's not looking to stay in an existing Department or is joining from the open as new to the civil service then I don't think they take any preferences into account. It is a flaw in the system particularly as they are at other levels looking more at skills and preferences.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 195 ✭✭Kirbi

PAS don't take preferences into account at all, but the employers can tag you - any of the Depts/Offices, not just one you already work in.

So, if you're particularly interested in working in a certain place, you can make contact with their HR, send them a CV, etc.

If they have a vacancy, and you have relevant training or experience, then it's probably better for them than taking a random person.

Unfortunately not and I had to turn my offer down as it was completely different to my skill set. The make you go through clearance etc before they give you the offer which means when you refuse you get removed from the panel. Very frustrating.

  • Registered Users Posts: 32 markyp1988

@Kirbi thanks for this. Would you say the best time to contact a department’s HR would be when you’re going through clearance or close to the top of the panel?

  • Registered Users Posts: 7 JSF223

@markyp1988 any idea where PAS are on the panel? Or anyone else have any latest insights? TIA.

  • Registered Users Posts: 32 markyp1988

@JSF223 i got a response from PAS at the start of this month that said they hadn’t started clearance for anyone in batch 3.3 for the Dublin open and were still clearing batch 3.2. Not sure how many people are left in that batch to be cleared.

    @markyp1988

I would make contact once I passed interview to establish a relationship and make the initial ask, and then notify them once you're in clearance (assuming the first overture went well).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 96 ✭✭countyireland12345

Great idea and wish I had thought of doing that..... I wonder does it work though. On the other side, does the Department have a choice, can it refuse a candidate and wait for a better matched one?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 195 ✭✭Kirbi

    @countyireland12345

It's how I was placed in the previous competition (although I had also worked with my prospective manager before).

It only works if both parties - candidate and employer - state that it's their preference for the candidate to be placed there. The preferences have to be made known to PAS before the candidate comes to be placed, and PAS can tag them for that employer.

Otherwise, the Department can't just refuse a candidate, and the candidate can't just refuse a placement. And if the timing isn't right for the tagging to work, i.e. there's not a vacancy there at the time, I think you'd be out of luck.

Those who’ve been through the process, I’ve my interview early in the week after next can you remember how many days in advance you the strategic exercise i.e. was it seven or more in advance. Getting a bit jittery here. Any interview tips appreciated also if anyone has the time thanks 😊

  • Registered Users Posts: 2 chilli beanie

hi in my experience it is 2 sometimes 3 questions per competency and then the panel will typically probe your answers. The question you mention is too basic and I doubt would be asked at AP level in that format. In my experience a typical question could be along the lines of

Can you tell us about a time when you were leading on a strategic project or policy, what were the challenges and how did you go about getting buy in from your team.

    Or

can you tell us about a time when you had to prioritize tasks taking into consideration available skills and resources, how did you prioritise, what were the challenges and how did you address them

    or

Tell us about a time you felt you were right but the person making the decision did not agree with you how did you go about explaining your position and what was the outcome..,

hopefully that gives you a steer.

Also to those turning down (or considering turning down positions) it’s worth bearing in mind after 2 years in role you can apply for mobility and have a decent chance of moving into a preferred Dept and role where you get to actually see the role descriptions in advance and of course requesting an internal transfer is also an option to seek out .

Hi there. I just checked and my SAE had to be submitted 3 working days before the interview date. It was 5 days in total if you factor in the weekend. I received the topics 7 days before the deadline. Best of luck. Lots of great tips in this thread. It's a lot of work. Have a look through Programme for Government for an idea of potential topics. Best of luck.

I'm waiting to be called for preclearance. I have no real preference for dept only that I really need a hybrid role, 3 days remote, 2 days in. Could I email PAS to request a hybrid role rather than a full time office role before you're called for clearance? Or is that not the done thing/pointless?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 195 ✭✭Kirbi

    @Onion87

No sorry, you can't do that as far as I know.

  • Registered Users Posts: 85 ✭✭Swilly22

No harm however in my experience PAS won't know the specific business needs & blended working arrangements of the team you're assigned to.

Anyone from batch 3.3 for Dublin open been called yet? Seems to be moving at a snails pace at the moment.

I emailed PAS this morning. They are now calling 3.3 for preclearance, I was 20 on OOM and now there are 4 ahead of me.

  • Registered Users Posts: 26 Onion87

Can anyone tell me at what stage do they tell you what dept they are offering you? Is it when you are called for preclearance or after preclearance?

  • Registered Users Posts: 36 Ritournelle

Can anyone who has done the Stage 3 interview and presentation advise how long the interview will last. Thanks a million

  • Registered Users Posts: 85 ✭✭Swilly22

Hi there I think 45 mins approx. I'm pretty sure it was 10 mins presentation, 10 min Q&A and then the interview. A little over an hour for me in total. Best of luck

  • Registered Users Posts: 24 Tony29

Hi Onion87 …. any news, have you been called for clearance?

  • Registered Users Posts: 24 Tony29

Hi Markyp1988, have you had a recent update from PAS on the open panel? thanks Tony

  • Registered Users Posts: 38 busher07

Hi Ritournelle, best of luck with your interview, do you know when this batch of interviews are finished.

  • Registered Users Posts: 13 WerdnaBe

How long, after your interviews did you get your result? 😁

Any how can you tell which batch you are in?

  • Registered Users Posts: 36 Ritournelle

I’ll double check the emakl but I think the last dates listed were towards the end of the month, they said last Friday they were interviewing for another couple of weeks

  • Registered Users Posts: 36 Ritournelle

The interviews are actually finished this week but not sure about the results

I was called for preclearance yesterday and have been provisionally offered a role in the Dept of Justice. Really happy with that, Id say it will be interesting. Does anyone know what the hybrid working policy in that dept is?

  • Registered Users Posts: 24 Tony29

great news, congratulations and best of luck in your new role ! Did PAS give you the name of someone in HR to link in with? you can ask HR regarding wfh, office location and section etc

  • Registered Users Posts: 5 236frenchie

Hi Onion87 long timer in DoJ here. The hybrid working policy in Dept depends on where you are working. I'm in office 2 days a week and 3 days wfh. Talk to HR and find out what location you will be based in and the policy there.

  • Registered Users Posts: 26 Onion87

Yes, They are getting that info for me. When I get the contact of the HR person I'll contact them and find out. Thanks for the advice and well wishes 🙂

  • Registered Users Posts: 7 JSF223

Congratulations @Onion87 🙂 that's fantastic news! Best of luck!

Anyone else been called for clearance yet or had a recent update from PAS?

Wouldn't it be great if your position dynamically updated in a portal somewhere while you wait 😁

    Hi folks,

I just passed the latest batch of interviews but i cant access the competition booklet. When is the panel expiry date? I think its November but i'm not 100% sure (edit - its 31st October 2024). Is it likely to reach me in 5 months? i'm 26 open and 21 interdepartmental.

How long does it usually take to for preclearance etc? I'm a serving civil servant so not really sure if that changes preclearance etc or what the next steps are.

ps this thread was a great help throughout the process.

hi all, long time lurker, first time poster. I have ZERO clue of this whole process. I am very grateful to have passed the last round of interviews held for the AP 2022 comp. I have so many questions, I don't know where to start but Q1: I've heard of this thing called tagging in a panel - does anyone know what this is? In OOM, I am 27 Open, 22 Interdept, Q2: what is the difference between those two? I didn't ask any Qs on here before this as I just felt so nervous about whole thing. I found the interview tough but the panel were so lovely, it was actually a nice experience! 😀

Hi all, I am in the same batch and 9 and 13 on the panels so hoping that I will be placed before the panel expires. Was there a typical timeframe for those who placed previously, it seems to a a couple of months looking back through the thread. Happy to share any info or help for any further batches re Stage 3 interview

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,069 ✭✭✭jones

I just received this update from PAS:

"We do not have a timeline as to when we will commence the clearance of batch 4.2, we are currently clearing the Open candidates from batch 3.3."

So if I'm reading that correctly does this mean

    1) there's a 4.1 batch before the batch I'm in?

    2) Is the order of merit number independent for each batch and not an overall number?

I've gone from being optimistic to being placed before the panel expires to slightly less so. Any guidance much appreciated.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5 236frenchie

Hi Ritournelle thank you for the offer of help. Could I ask you and anyone else that has been called forward for interview recently what your OOM was on the original testing done to give me an indication of whether there's any hope of being called before the panel expires. My original OOM on the inter-d was 1281 and on Open 1787. Many thanks

  • Registered Users Posts: 4 senna2804

Hi all, I received the below reply from PAS yesterday:

"We are still calling Open candidates to clearance from batch 3.3. Therefore, there are approx. 29 candidates ahead of you to be called for clearance before your position is reached."

I was in batch 4.3 and placed 10th on the open panel.

    I hope this is helpful!

  • Registered Users Posts: 5 236frenchie

Senna2804 would you mind indicating your original OOM so I can tell if I'm going to be called by 31st Oct 24?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,069 ✭✭✭jones

I am so confused with the batches and OOM stuff. I am in batch 4.2 (i did my interview on 1st May) but if you are 4.3 then i'm even more confused as there has hardly been another batch of interviews in the last 3 weeks.

So the interdepartmental panel seems to be moving quicker as its been cleared up until my batch 4.2. The open panel is still being cleared from batch 3.3 according to PAS.

I was 992 on interdepartmental and around 1400 on open if that's any help.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5 236frenchie

Many thanks Jones - think I'm way too far away on either to get the call before panel lapses so won't think about it anymore on this competition. We'll see on next one if can improve on OOM. Thanks again for responding.
