Pics are up from the second rehearsal today:

    https://eurovision.tv/gallery/ireland-bambie-thug-doomsday-blue

This is looking so so good. I can't believe it's Ireland!

The makeup has changed and looks much better here I think.

Really excited to see this on Tuesday.

Yes, I much prefer this look ; it's really striking but suits Bambie as well.

  • Registered Users Posts: 553 ✭✭✭supereurope

Considering her manner is very much "My dad was a big star at RTÉ so it owes me a living too", she probably thinks she has a God-given right to host it should it ever it come back to these shores "My dad hosted it so I should too."

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,729 ✭✭✭✭AndyBoBandy

RTÉ having to host it is pretty much the only negative to winning the competition.. so as a poster above mentioned… BBC, it's all yours…..

Is there a venue in Belfast that would be big enough to host a Eurovision?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,324 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

Painful. I would say she will still be doing fluff gossip reporting and other nonsense at that stage and picking up an easy paycheque (aged 48..lol)

I have to say and it kills me to say this but bar 1997 (but in fairness that was a 5th eurovision in 10 years) RTÉ's eurovisions were the best of that era, and that 1988 show really made what EUROVISION was to become.

The venue is a big issue across the Island but could Eurovision be hosted in one of the Stadia ?

What venue in NI was suggested for the UK's hosting?

Agree with the comments above, Bambie's looking great. Can't wait to see see the whole thing! My tv will be flying through a window next Tuesday if we don't make it.

    that looks fcuking AMAZING!!!!!!!!

    Sounds fcuking AMAZING

I said it before, I’ll say it again. We are winning the Eurovision.

Just out of interest, why don't you think 1997 was a good hosting? It's a very popular edition with much of the online fandom, with particular praise for the stage and Carrie's hosting. The only mistake RTÈ made was bringing Ronan Keating onboard as a fairly useless co-host, but thankfully he didn't do much.

It hurts me to say this as a Corkonian, but I'd argue 1993 was our weakest contest. Bringing the contest to rural Ireland was a brave move by RTÉ and Fionnuala was a great presenter, but otherwise it's not very impressive. The stage was fine but it was too far away from the audience, so they all looked a bit removed from the action (admittedly audiences were quieter back then anyway), the camerawork was poor and the interval act was dreadful, possibly the worst of the decade. And a bit like the 1992 contest, it feels a bit 80s. The 1994 contest was when the 90s arrived to Eurovision.

You're right on 1988 though, Eurovision was never the same again after that, even if it was a bit "style over substance" as it wasn't the greatest collection of songs.

Can't shake the feeling that a novelty act (Croatia/Holland) will win this year as revenge for Kaarija last year. There was a big disappointment amongst the voting public, I can see people getting disillusioned with the competition if another polished song wins particularly if it was Italy that already comes through a renowned music competition. The public knows what it wants from Eurovision!

  • Registered Users Posts: 553 ✭✭✭supereurope

I wouldn't categorise Croatia or the Netherlands as novelty songs, they both have a message that's delivered in a slightly jokey manner. But there is a seriousness behind both songs.

The rubbish from Finland, however, is pure novelty sh*te.

  • Registered Users Posts: 553 ✭✭✭supereurope

Back in 1989, Liam Miller proposed putting a roof on Páirc Uí Chaoimh to stage the contest in Cork. Considering our poor entry that year, he probably felt safe to make suggestions like that with no fear of them ever coming true.

Of course, 12 years later Danish television put a roof on a football stadium to allow it to host the contest…and it was a disaster of a venue. Just too big.

According to Eurovisionworld.com Ireland has only a 2% chance of winning as opposed to Switzerland which has a 23% chance.
im genuinely baffled as to who people here seem to think we have the remotest chance of winning.

Scott Mills has just had an interview with Windows95 Man. I know tge song but just hearing it played off the radio it sounded great. I really enjoyed it. It could be a big party song on the night if it gets through. Somehow I got caught up in how nuts it was watching the video but the song itself is a banger. Sadly from experience, my liking a song is kind of the kiss of death to its prospects!

I guarantee you, the percentage chances on Eurovisionworld will have shot up by this time next week (Wednesday). Bambie is rapidly gaining traction and momentum.

Don't know about winning but it should qualify without any problems, and finish close to the top ten.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,318 ✭✭✭RoTelly

I think it is very much of its time (I have no issue with Carrie Crowley, I agree Ronan "Nasal" Keating was a massive mistake). The set tries to look expansive but actually fails massively, the circular stage isn't big enough for the contestants and unfortunately for the set the design ended up be utilise massively on RTÉ up into the 2000s (Though this is not as big an issue for younger or European audiences). Though I really like the intro to that Eurovision, and IMO BBC's 1998 actually fails in comparison, its clearly a bigger venue but the set is far too small for the stage??? (something really off about that set, I am not quite sure what, was it to bright?).

What do we think the reaction in the hall is going to be for Israel?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,479 ✭✭✭✭Thelonious Monk

not sure what the swedes think of the whole israel thing but i still think they'll get lashed out of it with boos. i've never agreed with israel being allowed to compete in european competitions anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,800 ✭✭✭Quantum Erasure

We'll hardly hear any boos at home, back in 2015 there was 'anti booing technology' deployed (same thing as in noise cancelling headphones) for the reaction to the Russian song

My tv will be flying through a window next Tuesday if we don't make it.

If we don't qualify, I think it'll be the 1st year the Marty Meltdown will be fully justified.

I have had just a quick glace this year, am I wrong to suggest that there are a lot of similar songs/acts or at least staging? (I have only glace at the last few post here on boards and nothing else!).

I just had a look at teh recap of the 1st semi final rehearsals there, and nothing is really standing out in fairness…

Guaranteed qualifiers look like Baby Lasagna, Windows 95 man, Ukraine, and then 7 others, and at this stage I'd be really surprised if we don't qualify…

If this is the supposed 'strong' semi-final, I quite fancy our chances.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,318 ✭✭✭RoTelly

If we are side lined, should we bother with the Eurovision or is this act really that good, or is it just pure hype. Doesn't seem like we can blame the annual TLLS search for a "You're a Star" or that RTÉ didn't do enough on the production. Will it just be a case of we over estimated this act or that it really is all neighbours and politics? Or should be just send Jedward every year for the next 25 years!

I think it's a really good song (I say song because I heard the song before I saw any video/act), it's different, but it's still very good, and will appeal to a lot of folk.

A day or 2 before Eurosong, Joe.ie posted all the songs so I gave them all a listen, and I remember saying at the time to my OH, that out of all the songs, It was the only one I liked, and I believed it would actually have a chance to win Eurovision, but we wouldn't have the balls to send it…… then a few nights later it was selected (to my shock), and I've been behind it ever since…

  • Registered Users Posts: 117 ✭✭Libertine07

I believe RTE actually had some Eurovision fans on the panel reviewing the entries submitted for Eurosong. Without that I could see them completely skipping over both Bambie and Ailsha for being too out there.

Hopefully they stick with that, because RTE don't have a clue what works in modern Eurovision.

  • Registered Users Posts: 553 ✭✭✭supereurope

I agree with you that the proportions of the 1997 stage were wrong - it took up a huge amount of space but the performance area was actually very small. Apart from that, and Ronan, I though it was another great RTÉ production, though I'd put 1988 or 1994 as the best Irish contests.

The 1998 contest is, for me anyway, one off the high points of Eurovision, both the presentation and the songs. What I've never understood, though it why the BBC took a "meh, this'll do" attitude towards the stage, which was terrible. Same with the logo actually, it was just the EBU logo with a star added, a very lazy design.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,318 ✭✭✭RoTelly

I suppose I am looking at 1998 from a visual point of view, though Terry Wogan's bit of Paddywackery kind of annoyed me.

If anyone is wondering why the staging for Ireland song looks so far excellent versus the absolute train wrecks most other recent years. It seems it is being directed by a young Spanish fella called Sergio Jaen , i.e. it has nothing to do with RTE would be my guess (he also directed the music video).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,356 ✭✭✭✭Welsh Megaman

At this point in time, I’m predicting a scenario similar to last year, where the songs with the ‘earworms’ (‘Rim Tim Tagi Dim’, ‘Europapa’) will be fan favourites, but won’t be the overall winner a la ‘Cha Cha Cha’.

    Bern/Zurich in May 2025!

wasn’t it mentioned up thread that Bambi’s team were looking after staging/choreography? (Which was a very welcome move)

8th favourite overall to win Eurovision 2024

  • Registered Users Posts: 117 ✭✭Libertine07

Switzerland dropping fast after their rehearsal today. Vocals were good but the outfit is ridiculously bad and the whole package just isn't quite clicking.

It would be a shame if the staging kills it, as the song and performer are fantastic.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,324 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

Plus up to 6th in betting for semi qualification.

Glad I put my little top 10 bet on Bambie a while back 4/1 now 15/8.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,723 ✭✭✭seenitall

I think (hope) that is a wise bet.

I was just going to say that taster of the staging looks impressive, the song has plenty of punch to it and holds interest, Bambie has an intriguing stage presence, BUT the whole package seems to me to be just a tiny bit too “out there” in order for some (I’d say a sizable minority) of the cohort who will be televoting to truly embrace it douze points style, so overall I think this could maybe just slide by a whisker into the top 10 or thereabouts, with some help from the juries, hopefully. Just my rough estimation.

In any case, it really, truly, easily beats pretty much everything Ireland had sent in a good long while!

ETA: Yeah, the above is obvs about the Grand final. After seeing that little clip, I have no doubt whatsoever that they will qualify through. The staging is so important in this competition. Croatia is for example a banger of a song and the favourite to win the whole thing, yet I feel its somewhat unimaginative staging could drag it down and cost it, perhaps crucial, votes in the end.

there’s quite a lot of reaction videos up on the Tube for the latest rehearsals, and a lot of the comments are very favourable towards Ireland….. very favourable…

I think we are walking into the Final. Comfortably.

Did RTE have a say in allowing the Israeli entry to compete?

  • Registered Users Posts: 553 ✭✭✭supereurope

Sigh…once again, the time for discussions about a boycott/withdrawal has been and gone. With the exception of France in 1974, no one has ever pulled out of the contest once rehearsals have begun - and that was due to the French president dying.

A withdrawal at this late would lead to even more wasted costs…in addition to EBU participation fees and possible sanctions, all the money spent on getting the delegation to Sweden would be down the drain.

I don't agree with Israel competing, but to demand Ireland boycotts now is madness.
