My BIL stayed there last month, they had an epic cycle holiday. I'll find out the name of the accommodation.

Have stayed in https://www.hoposa.es/sporthotel-mallorca. Great location. Gym and pool set up too. Was bike rental place in the hotel that had Bianchi bikes, storage for the bikes in the hotel with tools if needed and shop for your bits and pieces too. Was very reasonable when I was there too. Nice to have everything in one place but was plenty of bike rental options around.

Ive here booked for April - have stayed a few times before as the hotel is also great for families.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,438 ✭✭✭jamesd

Have used rent March for bike rental. We are over at the end of April for a week.

Nice place, close to beach and good for cyclists. Older part of town, found it nice.

What are the day/night temps like later in April? I'm contemplating heading out for a few days but just unsure what the weather would be like.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,245 ✭✭✭07Lapierre

If it’s really bad, you might need arm warmers and a gillet (for the descents), but chances are you’ll just need shorts, jersey and sun cream!

  • Registered Users Posts: 120 ✭✭The Macho Man

I really like that last part 🤩

I did start looking at Sardinia and Sicily too but Mallorca seems well setup. I'd like to try Sardinia though 🤔

Average of 19 high, at night drops to 10 ish. Nice cycling weather, always packed gilet but did not need it.

I suspect it could be cold early morning/late evening and by cold i mean too cold for tee shirt and shorts. One year we were there and it rained a few days, so maybe pack a light rain jacket. But TBH, you'd be pretty unlucky to get bad weather for more then a day or two.

Contemplating a trip to Mallorca in April, has anyone stayed here

or used this crowd for bike hire ?

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,438 ✭✭✭jamesd

Staying in their Puerto de Pollença hotel again in April, have stayed there a few times before as excellent hotel and location.

Used Rent March for bike hire as beside the hotel.

Juts back from another magic trip to Majorca.

    ryanair shannon - palma

Airbnb in Bellevue Alcudia- self catering - perfect for what i needed

Bike in Bicimed platya Alcudia - German guy Thomas runs it. A very nice new Bottechia aerospace 105 di2 - highly recommend them - hassle free.

Caveat deposit online upfront & remainder of payment needs to be paid for with cash.

In Majorca now, heading home in the morning - same routes as yourself as we got caught Monday with rain.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,051 ✭✭✭Doc07

I’m in Majorca on family holiday near Magaluf in mid July. Want to do one long day to take in Sa Colobra. Any recommendations for road bike rental and any places do guides group rides, ie just bookable for one /two days outside of a full guided trip . Cheers

Could go to Andratx then down the coast to Sa Colobra - would be going over Puig Major on the way down so a big day of climbing.

I think Mallorca has had its day in terms of a cycling destination. It's too busy now, too many cyclists, bordering on dodgy with big groups thundering down the same narrow lanes with large speed differentials. Also, I have to say, the last time I was there I thought the road surfaces in places were poor and had deteriorated compared to the first time I went to there maybe 10 years ago.

This year and last year I've gone to Calpe on the Costa Blanca (?) and found it absolutely fan-bleedin-tastic. When you get away from the main thoroughfares it's almost as if you rented Mallorca all to yourself. It's awesome. Loads and loads of routes, top-quality bike hire available. Very reasonable hotel packages or Airbnb. - Apparently Remco Evanepoel and Van der Poel both have gaffs there and consider it worthy of their winter and between-race training.

17-19 damp mornings(x2 of 4) but afternoons great

Calpe,Girona and Torreveja all on the list asap for me!

I went back to Majorca due to majority rule on the destination- wouldn't be hurrying back.

I will be proposing Mainland Spain this autumn/next spring for sure!

    with you 100% on Majorca!

can you recommend Bike hire in Calpe?

    thanks

In Calpe we used a place called startwithbike. Small place in the town. Don't deliver. They have Giants mainly. We both got tcr advanced pro's ultegra di2. Great bikes and the big bonus is you get a proper bike fit before they let you out. Twice now we've had their bikes for a week of solid every day cycling and not a single twinge or pain or niggle. Well worth the effort. There are plenty other places of course too. One deadly place near the foot of Col de Rates that seem to specialise in Cervelo. S5s, R5s, Soloists. All gorgeous. And there's another Belgian run place in Calpe renting BMCs but they're either uniquely unfriendly or just Belgian, I don't know enough about the nationality to say for sure!

If you're further east nearer Málaga there's a place called Kamaga bikes we rented new Bianchis from, they have the brand new Specialissimas (comps) and they deliver. Lovely bikes.

I'll put my spoke in for Lanzarote. No huge climbs but pretty much every spin is lumpy. Road surface in the main is very good. Weather good(apart from the prevailing NE wind which can be a pain in the butt). Roads are quiet even in high season or so I have found over the 9yrs I've been coming here.

Last minute notions of going to Costa Brava for a camping type holiday in June, flying in and out of Girona.

I know Girona has become a bit of a mecca for cycling, and I did similar last year initaly, hiring a bike there for a few days.

    Has anyone done much here?

  • Registered Users Posts: 335 ✭✭Exiled1

Agree with Fat Bloke on Calpe.

Have visited twice in the past year. Super location but not one for beginners. It is almost impossible to find a 100km route with less than 1500m climbing (More likely 2000m+).

The main road along the coast is busy with traffic and the hard shoulders barely exist. This means that you have at least 8km of challenging urban cycling (except for one way directly out to Benissa from town centre) to access the inland routes.

But when you do, you will be wonderfully rewarded. Super smooth roads, stunning scenery wherever you look, climbs to suit every taste and talent, quiet roads, sleepy villages where coffee and cake are delightful and cheap.

    Different to Mallorca?

Not in terms of climate as they are on the same latitude and relatively close to each other.

Bike rental? At least five good choices in town. Vuelta-turistica is excellent.

Cycling friendly hotels…. several available. For groups, check out AR Diamante Beach offer from October to May.

    Routes? see above.

    Cost, quite similar.

Motril area has much quieter roads and will become popular in next few years

Anyone ever base themselves in Fuengirola specifically, for cycling? I've been to Malaga and that was good, but getting out of the city was a bit trying. I've heard Marbella further west was good. Fuengirola seems to be about midway between them so on paper it looks like having good access to hills and national park areas to the west of Malaga.

If anyone has actually been there and cycled there I'd like to hear what they thought of it please - Road cycling, that is.
