Both codes need be seriously looked at and how we devlop players.

Doing something right in Hurling in fairness. Would not worry too much about last night as hopefully saving a few gears for later.

I would give Ryan much more time had he picked younger players coming through but that been the stark thing about his selections this season, with no u20 player from last two years making the cut. Big question mark right there.

Big win today for the Cork Ladies Footballers.

    MLGFA Championship Round 3

    Tipp 0-10 Cork 0-11

2 points in the last 2 minutes to turn it around and win it

We have a bigger task at our hands now with the result of the Tipp v Waterford game. Can't see us turning this one around. Cant see us beating Limerick. I am not expecting anything only a loss so can't get myself excited enough to go and watch the game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,719 ✭✭✭Seadin

I agree. The standards arent good enough and until this improves we aren't going to be winning All Irelands anytime soon. Whoever is in charge of developing the underage players isn't doing a good job. We are accepting mediocrity in Cork GAA for at least 3 decades now and nobody is bold enough to challenge the setup and say come on lads enough is enough let's do what it takes to get Cork GAA back winning again in both codes.

would it not be better if he was allowed to operate a transitional period , he after all was the u20 manager for most of them victorys , he looked like a man under pressure over in cusack park in February let alone last week ,

all of this is assuming the limerick game goes away from ye , looking at facts , we probably should have beaten limerick in week 1 , we beat ye in week two narrowly , which was a much improved performance from the previous week on your part, so next week is still all to play for

but if limerick win surly the sensible thing to do is to use the tipp game as the starting point for a transition that will also take place over the Couse of next year , and realistically set a target of 2027 onwards for success , the conveyor belt is still running at underage level too but its no point saying the future is bright if you are not going to properly give players a chance , its exactly what we done in 2011 and 2012 before 2013

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,119 ✭✭✭windy shepard henderson

would cork supporters allow for a period of transition over the next few years and maybe one or two bad results along the way in order for long term success , you have had a lot of really good under age sucess latley

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,124 ✭✭✭Straight Talker

For some reason i'm confident enough we'll put in a performance against Limerick next week.

Whether it'll be good enough to win i don't know, but if we are down to our last two games for the year then at least go out with a bang.

tommy walsh said it last week in commentary no one in munster has ever got 8 points in one campaign , to me this is a banana skin for limerick

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 641 ✭✭✭sportsfan90

    Tipp did it in 2019.
The last time Cork got blown away in a match was against Limerick in the first round of 2022. Since then Cork have lost 6 matches, but the biggest losing margin was 3 points. So while very competitive in every game, they’ve struggled to get over the line in tight matches.

Unfortunately Tipp couldn't do us a favour against Waterford. Defeat to Limerick next Saturday and the show is over for 2024, and it will be official that our wait for Liam McCarthy will extend into it's 20th year. And we thought at the time, that 1990 to 1999 was going to be our last lengthy all Ireland drought!

We're all desperate for that all Ireland at this stage, but we may have to wait another couple of years yet. The step up to senior level might be tough but 2025 needs to be all about integrating a fair few of the U20 players into the senior panel.

Beat Limerick though and we live to fight another day. The players need to be ready for this, Limerick are coming down to bury us next Saturday. It's going to take by far our best performance of the year to beat them.

But Tip did do us a favour. Had Waterford won, Cork were out. Win 2 games and hope Waterford lose their next 2 and we qualify.

Massive pressure on Cork next weekend. Hard to see them getting the result that's required.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 33,248 CMod ✭✭✭✭ShamoBuc

Massive pressure yes. Its a real 'knock out championship' game for Cork, which is what I'm looking forward to seeing.

Only 3 points or less separating the sides over the past 5 or 6 games - I'm expecting a close game and hopefully a pen decision goes in our favour for a change and that could make the difference.

I certainly wouldn't fear Limerick in anyway for this game. I think we are due a win.

  • Registered Users Posts: 943 ✭✭✭Vinnie222

Think Cork have gone backwards. Limerick at full strength will win handy imo . We know this time next week

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,719 ✭✭✭Seadin

They won't be on the right side of the result anyway that's for sure. I love to see it but we all have high expectations next week and that's when they won't win. I don't want to say it but Limerick would have to collapse badly for Cork to win this one and it just won't happen . I will record and watch afterwards. Not able to watch Cork games anymore without feeling tense. Not good for one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,719 ✭✭✭Seadin

Like I said, Cork would have to play the hurling of their lives and Limerick would want to be so badly under par and referee in our favour to have any hope. I think it's safe to say our championship is over next Sunday. It's a safe bet I think.

  • Registered Users Posts: 675 ✭✭✭supernova5

I would give Cork a right good chance, apart from the 2021 All Ireland final games between them have been extremely close, I don't think Limerick will win all their round robin games [they know they can afford to lose at least one and still make a Munster final]

The home group stage game in the football against the Ulster champions will be in Pairc Ui Rinn. The pitch in PUC won't be available due to the Springsteen concert.

I think we'll have a right cut off Limerick. As to whether it'll be good enough time will tell, but both players and management need to stand up and make a statement on Saturday evening.

    This was on at the very end of The Sunday Game last night; Donal Og Cusack highlighted the shocking lack of effort by Cork in the lead-up to Shane O Donnell's goal last Sunday;

    https://www.rte.ie/sport/hurling/2024/0506/1447588-cusack-defensively-cork-need-to-enjoy-the-kill-more/

Lads this is why Cork are not able to win big games, no excuses for this. I am posting it because the very same thing happened in 2022 when Clare beat us in Thurles. Clare scored a point and the ball was carried from the puck-out to the scorer without a single Cork player laying a finger on any Clare player. I can't remember who the scorer was but I distinctly remember that clip being shown on the Sunday Game that night to highlight the lack of work-rate by Cork.

And here we are two years later and the exact same thing is happening. The more things change in Cork hurling the more they say the same it seems.

Cork lost by 11 in the last championship game in PuC back in 22.

Not saying it means anything for Saturday but 2 of Corks last 3 championship games against Limerick were hammerings.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,330 ✭✭✭✭namloc1980

The last 4 games between them have had an average margin of victory of 9 points for Limerick. It's been fairly one sided in most recent times with the exception of last year.

Well no one expects Cork to win, and a lot of people in Cork itself are not expecting a Cork win either. Hopefully we can keep it close, and we are long overdue to come out the right side of a close one.

Curious to know who are all these u20s that should be on the team?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,082 ✭✭✭lukin

Two of them played against Clare; Brian Hayes and Ethan Twomey.

Rumour has it that Joyce is out, Tommy to start at centre back. O'Flynn will start.

Goals were the difference in that minor game. We missed our chances whereas they took theirs!

Its worrying to me that we have a minor keeper copying Patrick Collins in just giving away points with poor puckouts. I was hoping Collins would be dropped for the seniors as he is a really weak link.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,847 ✭✭✭✭callaway92

More than just the goals on the scoreboard being the difference. Cork were stink in fairness.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,719 ✭✭✭Seadin

It starts with beaten in the seniors by clare beaten in the u20s by Tipp beaten in the minors by Clare and next weekend beaten by Limerick in the seniors. What a sh#t era for Cork hurling. We don't have the people who have the knowledge to make the changes here either.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,847 ✭✭✭✭callaway92

What was the thoughts on John Meyler getting that Minor job at the time? In hindsight it seems an atrocious appointment but I wouldn’t know what people thought initially.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,719 ✭✭✭Seadin

A terrible decision if you ask me. Going backwards after that appointment.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,309 ✭✭✭evolvingtipperary101

Wasn't Meyler with that group all the way up?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,124 ✭✭✭Straight Talker

It looks like Patrick Collins in goal, is going to be the hill that Pat Ryan dies on as Cork manager. The old saying about it harder to get off a Cork team than on it very much applies in this scenario!

I think it's fair to say that Pat Ryan is just not willing to make the hard calls as a manager. There's no guarantees that 2025 will be any different either.

I don't mean to single out Patrick Collins here, he's just an example of how certain players are just guaranteed a place on the starting fifteen irrespective of performances or lack of performances.

I agree about Collins. I would have taken him off at half time against Clare. Lehane, I would have taken off at half time in the Waterford game. I don't think Ryan reacts quick enough in games.

It is still possible that we can win though. Being at home with a packed house is an advantage and we need a bit of luck. I feel like we have had no luck at all in our first 2 games. The good thing is that we are finishing games very well and in fairness, it is a trait of Ryans tenure. But us going out in round robin is also a trait too! If we can be close near the end, we can definitely pull off the win but the worry is the usual frailties.

Our win rate in Munster is only 30% in 3 seasons but I see a Tom Kenny article saying we have to stick with Ryan no matter what happens. Surely this is a results business.

I wouldn't agree with Tom Kenny at all there. Cork seem rudderless so far under Pat Ryan. We just need to see some sort of performance against Limerick tomorrow night. I thought we seemed to be making progress last year, but so far 2025 has been a wasted year with no signs of any progress whatsoever. If anything we've actually gone backwards!

As for the footballers that's a tough enough group with Tyrone and either Armagh or Donegal in it. Clare are in our group as well, they did beat us last year and they showed against Kerry that they're no mugs at all. We can't afford to take them for granted. It's probably going to be between ourselves and Clare for third place in the group. Hopefully we can get at least one win from the Armagh and Tyrone games as well.
