Hi folks, I am looking to purchase a new Kayak from the UK. I have checked the first post and see there is no duty on such a product when bought new. The reason I'm posting is that the company will not deliver to Ireland. I can go myself and pick it up though. Am i correct in thinking that if I go over on the boat pick up the Kayak then I will just be liable for 23% Irish VAT and as I'm exporting it from the UK i won't have to pay the UK VAT? Also, how and where would i pay the VAT? TIA

The company in the UK would charge you UK VAT, as they aren't exporting it, you are. You can contact customs at the port of arrival or at the local revenue office later to arrange customs clearance.

MOD: Before anyone weighs in with advice, please check the charter for this forum, in particular the bit about evading customs.

If the company will send to Northern Ireland use one of the parcel forwarding services and be there on the day to collect the Kayak. You will save a costly ferry trip across.

OOHPOD etc. charge €6 for oversize and are very understanding with regard to a larger delivery like this (Call before delivery and explain you will collect on same day as delivery etc. etc.)

I see, I'd be caught twice with VAT. Still might work out cheaper than buying here. Thanks

That might be an option, I know a fishing shop up there who might source it for me from the UK. They then sell it to me. As I'd be buying it from them, I think that is okay. Thanks

    Hi,

Is there any customs/import duty payable on an antique piece of Edwardian (Providence: England) jewellery posted from the UK to Ireland? Value would be over €3k

I think the TARIC is 7113 19 which says 0%

It's an 18ct gold chain with some diamonds. Thanks.

If the Taric is correct then add 23% on to the value plus the cost of shipping. With a value like that, I'd be double checking with customs, though.

    Hi all,

I've purchased a used video game console from Japan for €182.04, postage is €65.94. What will I be paying in VAT and other customs charges?

    Thank you.

23% of the total so €57.03 + admin fee

If ordering from Japan, I always use Fedex. Their admin fee is €15 but the goods arrive in three or four days. They do text you on the day of delivery asking for payment but I always ignore it and the packages are always delivered anyway. I don't pay the charges until I get a paper invoice in the post which can be up to a month later.

An Post admin fee is €3.50 but they've returned packages of mine to Japan due to failed electronic customs clearance - so I stopped using them.

DHL also fine for delivery from Japan.

as the value is over 150 there may be customs duty as well. this depends on the taricc code for video game consoles.

I've never had customs duty on a €150+ order, just the VAT and the admin fee.

What rate is customs duty charged at?

I purchased a piece of clothing and had it delivered to the Addresspal USA service. I have received it but now need to return it by posting the return directly to the American company's warehouse. What is the situation regarding customs, duties, etc.? Will there be more charges even though I paid them when getting through Addresspal?

A relative in the UK wants to buy something online from a UK seller and send to me as a birthday gift from but wondering about customs charges.

So as long as she orders it to her UK address first then sends it on to me marked as a gift there should be no customs fees of any kind correct ?

Could she use the box/packaging it was sent to her in , but maybe remove invoices etc and put birthday card in, just to be safe ?

Thanks for any info from those who have done this.

A Gift is valued at under €45.00

    From Revenue:

Rules for duty relief on gift consignments

You can receive a gift without payment of Customs Duty and Value-Added Tax (VAT) if:

    • the value of the gift (including insurance, freight and postage costs) is €45 or less
    • the gift is correctly declared
    • the gift has been sent from a private individual outside the European Union (EU) to a private individual within the EU
    • the gift is for the personal, or family use, of a private individual in the EU
    • there is no commercial or trade element, that is, the goods have not been paid for by the recipient
    • the gift is of an occasional nature only such as a present for a birthday or anniversary.

A gift received may contain two or more items with a combined value of greater than €45. In such cases relief is given for as many of those items as add up to a value not exceeding €45. For example, if you receive a gift containing three items with a value of €20 each, your relief applies to two of the items only. The value of an individual item cannot be split up.

Please read the charter for this forum, and the 1st post in this thread regarding customs etc.
