Phenomenal hailstones and torrential rain just north of Moone/Timolin, Kildare about 30 minutes ago - the type of weather that makes you stop and stare!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 215 ✭✭Frankie19

I'm Navan South and it appears to be from the North of me. Its been constant now for the past 20 mins with the odd bigger rumble every now and then

Is the eastern side of the county going to come away unscathed I wonder? Stunning day here all day, the occasional cloud breaking the sunshine but that's it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,907 ✭✭✭pureza

    Most likely unscathed yes

    Except Dublin northwards

  • Bit of a localised downpour in Dublin city centre

In Drogheda and it's continually for the last half hour, very heavy rain, rumbling non stop, lighting a little harder to see though.

A short-lived shower of light rain lasting 10 minutes passed through Lucan around 5.30pm. I was expecting a lot more. It has brightened up now, dark clouds that sat over us all day have gone.

Here in Lucan, heavy drops earlier but been sunshine since. Hoping some thunder rolls in later. Some lightning too when it's darker would be great

Not a bad little storm out in north county Dublin. Seen a few strikes and many flashes but don’t think I captured any. Video of rumbles of thunder near Ballyboughal in link below which won’t embed. May edit later on PC.

    EDIT: Link fixed.

they were two separate storms, one N. Co Dublin and the one you were hearing near Navan.

There seemed to be a lot of rumbles north of Swords around 5 and a heavy shower that gave the place a good soaking. Temperature dropped a couple of degrees as well

One of the cracks in north Dub sounded like a bomb going off at a moderate distance, i.e. a sharper more intense burst of noise, as opposed to the low rolling rumble I'm more used to.

Fairly active day, the ADT below is tuned more to CG's whereas Blitzortung picks up a lot of the cloud to cloud as well as CG's.

Are there any local weather stations near Carpenterstown (D15) that recorded rainfall yesterday? There was a downpour around 4pm, lasting about an hour, and I'd like to know what the total was for that.

Small chance of a thunderstorm in Clare or Galway this afternoon early evening, possibly along those coasts also, chances are low and very isolated.

Models showing heavy convective showers tomorrow courtesy of the circulation of LP to the South feeding in bands of rain and showers and a thunderstorm risk mainly in Munster but maybe straying into Connaught and possibly parts of midlands but a lower risk there I would think. Some models showing it quite active in Munster. Low level shear and convergence zones with a negatively tilted upper trough aiding instability and vorticity. Could see a shot of activity along the Kerry /Cork border perhaps being aided by orographic lift and converging winds.

Some thunderstorms in Munster and Connaught now

A small chance of a thunderstorm tomorrow mostly in the SW perhaps and Thurs looks active and more widespread potential across the country with good sunshine levels giving decent CAPE, temperatures getting up to the high teens and over 20C in a good area in central Ireland, decent Theta E readings giving plenty of moisture in the atmosphere and decent enough DLS. Will need to keep an eye on Thurs as has to look for a few days now of being quite active and could produce warnings.
