Interesting Maps

I have had a huge interest in maps and geography since I was a very small child - I am generally fascinated with the way places and routes are related to each other in spatial terms, and I could pore over a good map for ages.

So here’s a little thread on maps that I find interesting and fascinating - some represent data, some physical features, others may display key routeways and connectivity and others again might show urbanisation and the growth patterns of cities.

Here’s one to start off....The number of army tanks per 10K population in Europe, by country. Feel free to post your own! :D

Map showing all the river catchments in Ireland.

The Shannon catchment is in red (roughly in the Centre), that of the rivers Barrow, Nore and Suir are in pink, the Erne is in yellow and the Liffey and Boyle are in slightly different shades of pale green.

Not army tanks, but this is a map of storage tanks in Ireland: http://overpass-turbo.eu/s/OGu - May take 15-20 seconds to load. If nothing shows, press 'Run'. May not work on some devices.

I like the American Werewolf poster but where is the catchment area of the werewolf's ear when you compare to JupiterKid's river map? ;)

Only slightly related, but I was wandering down my town via Streetview when I noticed that the Department of Defence building was blurred out. Fair enough, since it's a Department of Defence (not that any foreign powers would be bothered with it). Then I noticed another house that was blurred out, an old single-storey cottage in a back-street. Why would anyone bother with that? I presume the owner requested it.

Anyway, back to maps! Here's a map of the most common surnames in Europe by country:

Ireland would be one of the best places to live on the planet if that were the continental arrangement today, sea to the west of us, land mass to the east and just the right distance from the equator to be warm all year round....stupid continental drift!!

I love that. I think about how our environment affects us quite a bit. Take car culture - in the US they're all about straight line speed, muscle cars, drag racing etc presumably related to long continental roads over flat plains. In Europe it's rally cars and formula one - all about the cornering in a continent of narrow roads, bridges, mountain passes etc.

Loving this thread. Married, one child, showed my husband, he's fascinated by maps as well.

I got a present of an atlas for my 8th birthday (nearly 40yrs ago), a big hardback one. Still have it and love looking at the old borders and showing my kid that there used to be a country called Yugoslavia, and that Germany used to be 2 countries. Lots of other fascinating data too.

Stick around a while, you might actually learn something.

What really blew my mind was when I found out that the sizes of countries we see on standard maps of the world are very much distorted!

As the world is spherical we cannot truly represent it on a 2D map without some distortion. The standard map you will see uses the Mercator projection (one of many different types of projections). This distorts the map so that countries along the equator are shown a lot smaller in comparison to those nearer the poles which are exaggerated in size.

An excellent site that allows you to compare countries sizes to each other to get a more true representation is https://thetruesize.com/

    Here is an example:
    16-maps-that-will-totally-change-the-way-you-look-at-the-world-02.jpg

As you can see that when DRC is moved up to Europe and Greenland's position on the map, its size greatly increases.

The website is easy to use and gives you a far greater appreciation of the true size of countries along the equator!
