Reseeding 2024

have have acres ploughed since sept weather broke and I got stuck with it. It’s heavy ground enough but hoping maybe next week the contractor could come back to get it harrowed out and sown. Il ring him next week see what he thinks. Will be sowing some oats alone with this as it was bird cover so will be weedy.

Also have another 5acres that need to be drained first got and the hedges tidied up and drains cleaned just need to get it shored also have a few piles of bushes to clear would usually burn them but it’s along a main road so we will see.

Multi species going in it first thing in the morning. Failed to do it last September when the weather broke.

Got 12 acres that were bought that need attention. Likelihood is it won't be done this year though.

Going to mulch rushes and then spray the regrowth. Might put in some drains too - will wait and see how/if it dries out over the summer, no point reseeding without sorting the drains. Moss is all through it. Don't think it can come back into grass without a reseed, can it?

Have to sort the silage ground, got it samples and needs lime. Was told that it could be wasting about half of fertiliser spread due to ph and the indexes. So that is a higher priority.

Lots of work to do, little time to think it through properly and even less funds to finance it all!

Ah it's not as good as it looks, it's a bit that was reclaimed last year and it's poor enough stuff to be honest. No I'd 2 acres sowed 2 years ago in a bit I reclaimed aswell. Grows like stink.

It's poor as piss. Was long term rented previously. Had it a few years now, and cleaned main drains, refenced, put mains water to each field.

Rushes have come up shocking on it in the last while. So I'll get them mulched, slay regrowth and then a good coat of slurry. I think the ground is very low in nutrients, might need to bring them back up before attempting any reseed.

I've identified where a few drains are needed, but whether they can be done this year or not is unknown.

Sowed a small bit of chickory last year with some clover, once established it grows really well alright.

Neither really, it was some ground with furze that I had cleared with a digger, spread the seed on top and rolled it.

Its split. Heavy rushes in part good grass in parts and moss strangling grass in others.

I was looking at grass seed today and I would normally go with with Agritech 4a seed but I was having a look at gold crop seeds today they have some good grazing mix’s but I noticed one of the grazing mix’s had chicory in it along with the grass and the clover. Would this be a good in addition in the mix ?? I have never done multi species so have no experience of it. And if it was cut in silage would it preserve ok?

I have ground of a peaty nature just need to get the seed into it this year. My ground wouldn’t be as good as that ground. I purchased the difficult soils mix from germinal and I got it without Timothy. What ever you do make sure not to get Timothy in the mix unless your plan is to make hay in it every year. Timothy is a horrible species never liked it

Roundup or gallup is what I have used in the past, and will be using it again this year. anyone know what spray can be used on established reseeds to kill of grassland weeks like crowsfoot chickweed and so on with out damage to the clover?

From spraying to sowing about €150 should cover it.

You provide the spray and seed.

Thanks its expensive but what isn't these days, want to keep the sward clean so will use it in the after grass

Nope. Can be costly day 1 but very beneficial.

Anyone ploughing grassland anymore. I've paddocks with docks and old **** grass. Would burying it altogether be a better job than just discing?

going to do 2 paddock this year with the plough after not using one for 10 years. Think it might improve drainage

I know dirty bastards. It's more the old tough grass. Was thinking there would be less trash aswell.

20 litres of normal glyphosate will cover 7-8 acres, can't tell amount of water. Put some washing up liquid in.

Reseeded a field last year that I bought and also reseeded one of my meadows along with it put same seed in both of them but my own field is out performing the field I bought I know its down to the index's but just wondering how can I build then p and k without slurry as my shed isin't on the same block. I even put out 4bags to the acre of cut sward on this field and 3 on the other and trying to compensate 😂 but I must say grass is gone make quality silage hopefully take it around end of the month

Yeah it would be but I wanted more nitrogen for the silage. I will apply 18-6-12 now for grazing. I find 18-6-12 doesn't yield a good first cut fast enough and I want to get a quality first cut.

Would cattle slurry supply all of that as well on its own? What k and p would 3000 gals of cattle slurry to the acre supply? Lime is done put out 3t to the acre last year which is what the soil test called for. Il put out some 0-7-30 in sept should help bring up the index's

Lads, I have a silage field that has a few ruts in it from fertiliser and slurry spreading, thinking about reseeding it, it was probably last done 12 years ago, I have slurry out on it again. Should I leave it a few weeks to green up and then spray it off? Usually reseed a small bit in the autumn, this is my first time reseeding silage ground since I took over, I thinking it might be well into June before it's ready to till
