No he's not. You don't end up ruling Russia for over 20 years if you're even within spitting distance of mad. Never mind doing that as Russia emerged from the chaos that was the 1990's. That takes serious levels of consistent guile, planning and attention.

Nukes are a very good big stick to wave about as a threat, but less so in reality. Unless Russia actually gets an existential threat from NATO, which is highly unlikely, nukes remain a big stick. Tactically? OK, where does he use one? Firing one at a section of the front is very risky to your own forces and you'd need enough of a build up of troops to move through the gap created. They're far more "useful" as city killers, but then you've just destroyed a city you want to occupy and you've just proven you're otherwise losing to both the world and the home audience.

Hit Kiev? Then any reasoning behind the invasion vanishes. What allies Russia has(and her enemies) would lose the plot, especially China. Why? Because the second a nuclear power fires a nuke at a non nuclear power all bets are off. Many non nuclear powers watching that have the capability to build their own bomb(which would be many as nukes are not that complex to make anymore) would likely start building one as self protection, which in turn would lead to more nuclear weapons proliferation.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

If it was Russia responsible for Fico's shooting, what would be their motive?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,161 ✭✭✭zerosquared

There’s a good video here on the subject touches some of the points you have made and more

In short using nuclear weapons would be a monumentally stupid thing for Putin to even contemplate

A warning to European leaders that they could be next. But this time not a stomach shot.

It's going back to the old days of Russia, USSR having european leaders afraid of USSR assassins.

Hopefully leaders don't crumble and double down on their support, aid, might, to Ukraine.

Presumably there must be an ancient Chinese proverb along the lines that if you lie down with dogs, you'll get fleas.

Any mainstream media running with the "he was actually rightwing" angle on the shooter? Or is just the usual Twitter vortex?

People have to realise that when they endorse shooting a democratically elected thug Fico, it will ultimately just become open season for anyone with a grudge to say "well if it's acceptable for them to shoot my guy, I'm gonna shoot theirs".

The likes of Fico and Orban may be doing the very best to undermine democracy from within, undoubtedly with feathering their own nests in mind. But its through using the ballot box and taking to the streets that those battles will be won. We have plenty of little Ficos in this country too, all playing the same tune, the same gameplan. You'll know them when you find that the only things they're vocal on are the populist, divisionary issues of the day. It starts at the ballot box, and it ends at the ballot box. Remember that when you're deciding whether or not to bother voting. The slippery slope is real.

The guy even wrote far right poetry and books against Romani people, beside attending Russian sponsored far right events

    This bit was extra ironic

“ he founded "Movement Against Violence" ”

a book about Romani people in Slovakia titled Efata. In this book, Cintula praised the programme of the far-right People's Party Our Slovakiaand professed understanding of mass-murderers in cases of perceived governmental failures,[27][30][31] in particular regarding the 2010 Bratislava shooting.[32]

    —-

Short of tattooing a swastika above his rear it’s hard to get anymore right wing

Cheers. Its curious that nowhere seems to be reporting on this (that I can see anyway). It's a pretty big angle - the first thing anyone would think when they heard the news… "was it hypocritical lefties or regressive right wingers?".

I suppose main stream media need to corroborate and fact check sources whereas any expert on the internet can publish opinion as fact.

Main stream media confirming that he was a right winger should help to calm the situation down… already plenty of voices in Slovakia pointing fingers at the opposition and media and suggesting that their criticisms are to blame. This would shut them right up.

No way Russia behind this. They have 2 loyalists in Europe. Fico and Orbán. They’re not going to eliminate those. Who provide useful stumbling blocks to EU aid to Ukraine.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,898 ✭✭✭fly_agaric

Probably. Hopefully it won't be used as justification to start rolling out state repression in Hungary (which they have not really had yet) + moving even closer to a Putin or Lukashenka style regime in the middle of the EU. I believe general anger with Orbán + protests against the govt. have been growing there recently, which might make him paranoid as well.

it was EXTREMELY ESSENTIAL to Russia up to the point when UKR blew part of it up . Now it is ONLY VERY ESSENTIAL !!. The next time UKr attack it then it will only essential. And after the third attack it probably not be needed anyway - bridge being replaced by ferries , air planes, kites, hot air balloons, para gliders, etc, etc. All of them are quite capable of negotiating the strait. The front lines and tourists to the area should not notice in the change of service supply

Institute for the study of war. Well worth throwing an eye over this every day - daily updates. This is todays. Gives you idea of what Putins / Russias battlefield strategy is:

Russian President Vladimir Putin emphatically downplayed the threat of Ukrainian counterattacks along the entire frontline, further indicating that he assesses that Ukraine cannot and will not be able to liberate territory seized by Russian forces and that this will allow Russian forces to pursue creeping advances indefinitely.

Have read of this .. above is a very small snippet

Always very interesting to watch - The Times Radio daily vids on Youtube with Kate Chabot.

This is todays with The Times's Maxim Tucker at the frontlines in Kharkiv - JUST FASCINATING

Kyiv has deployed special forces to hunt down Russian assault groups as Ukraine begins to adapt to Putin's new tactics, reports Maxim Tucker who has been on the front at Lyptsi and Vovchansk with Ukrainian troops

As per that Times vid with Maxim Tucker, Russians now using small group tactics with well trained possibly specialist FSB groups rather than huge columns. About 18mins 26 in.

This is indeed another worth while watch from THE TIMES. Xi and Putin met today to discuss amongst other things new world orders. Very illuminating

They want a world of regional power blocks where they can sort things out in there own back yards without likes of US interference etc.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,161 ✭✭✭zerosquared

    interesting from same

The tempo of Russian offensive operations in northern Kharkiv Oblast continues to decrease after Russian forces initially seized areas that Ukrainian officials have now confirmed were less defended

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,161 ✭✭✭zerosquared

    and then lower down:

Putin likely has made this assumption based on months of gradual grains throughout eastern Ukraine, but this calculus fundamentally misjudges the tactical capabilities that Ukrainian forces will have once US security assistance begins to arrive to the front at scale

Watch those TMIES vids above too @zerosquared .. very illuminating

Why have 8 days of posts disappeared - gone poof? Someone hit the nuke button?

How did this thread suddenly lose a week's worth of posts?

"I'm not a Trump supporter, but..." is the new "I'm not a racist, but...".

has this thread been ‘hacked’? . My I pad has stopped receiving posts from May 9th. When I put in a few words for testing they did not come up. When I did the same on another thread there was no problem . When I access the Board’s site , it records under the ‘Russia ‘thread the latest contribution - on 17/05/2024-from ‘Addmagnet ‘ at 8.17 am. But when I go to the site to look up the latest posts - which should be from Addmagnet today- the last on my screen is from ‘Hodger’ received on 08/05/2024 at 11.06am . Anyone know what’s going on?

There's 9 days of pages missing on the thread, has the forum been hacked by the tankies? 🤔
