A must win Hon the cats

In Parnell Park here, Deegan , TJ and to a lesser degree Eoin Cody terrible. Eoin Murphy saves and puck outs keeping us in the game. We are in big trouble

  • Registered Users Posts: 486 ✭✭Butterbeans

We may win this, but we're far from convincing

How many thrown balls in the build up to that goal? Ridiculous

Too many passengers and very one paced.

TJ caught over carrying 3 times . And 2 awful wides . Deegan roasted by Burke and Cody in bother on O Donnell ?

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,822 ✭✭✭kksaints

Not particularly great half from us. Donnelly bar one mistake has done well but no one else has really impressed. In reality too many of our forwards are underperforming, TJ has made some horrible errors along with some good scores, Cody started ok but has drifted out of the game, Tom Phelan hasn't been in the match at all, Wall hasn't got the ball he needs but is struggling somewhat. Keoghan has done ok but we need more from the rest of the forwards.

  • Registered Users Posts: 152 ✭✭kentu

Yeah TJ unlucky with 1 or 2 of those compared to what you see across other games, Deegan has hurled a lot of ball and infairness he wants to try protect the full back line today which we are usually critical of. Marking Donal Burke tough he needs good protection from players around him.

Cody 1st match back in a while, doesn't look fully right but has managed to score 2 points infairness to him.

Anyway Mossy and Donnelly flying, Tom Phelan and Owen Wall struggling.

Sounds like Dublin are on top of Kilkenny at the moment. They have missed a few goal chances. Our backs seem to be at sixes and sevens

We are continuously handpassing the ball to a man in no position to receive it. Headless stuff

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,080 ✭✭✭BQQ

what has TJ done to all these referees?

Over carrying is widespread, but almost never gets called.

TJ however, gets pinged three times in one game. Have you ever seen someone blown for that three times in a single match? And he gets it all the time - usually when there’s two or more lads hanging out of him

    John Donnelly out **** standing

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,313 ✭✭✭Village87

Blessed to get out with a win . We have a lot of issues. Dublin missed 3/4 goals that they should have buried all one on ones

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,888 ✭✭✭Charlie69

Hard fought victory away from home alright but you were watching a different game to me.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,822 ✭✭✭kksaints

Result is all that matters. Donnelly was superb, Blanchfield very good in the 2nd half, Billy Ryan worked like a dog when he came on and set up the goal. Cody did next to nothing in the 2nd half but still scored a crucial 1-1. Lots of improvement needed next time out but I think that means we can't finish any lower than 3rd regardless of next weeks results.

We seem to have a lot of players that are out of form or just back back from injury and are searching for form which is far from ideal

Mossy Donnelly and murphy very good today

B Ryan and fogarty made a difference when brought on

But we have a lot of improving to do to that performance won’t be good enough going forward

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,939 ✭✭✭blackcard

Absolutely steeped to win that. Donnelly a hero. Billy Ryan made a difference. But a sad reflection of our depth that Buckley and Fogarty, stars of yesteryear but past their prime, were brought on as subs. Mossy tried hard, Cody for his first day back did ok. Tom Phelan, TJ and Owen Wall were poor. I don't think Shane Murphy is a midfielder and Michael Carey was disappointing. Overall, we were very open and could have conceded more goals. Mullen badly needed but we are a long way short

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,888 ✭✭✭Charlie69

Shane Murphy definitely not a midfielder, don’t know why he tried that again. Donnelly and Mossy very good and Cody showed his class when he got his hands on the ball. Never an easy place to go so good result but loads to work on for sure.

Got out of parnell Park with the win by the skin of our teeth there.

Great to get 2 points but we absolutely laboured in most of what we did today.

One of our biggest faults of the last few years was to the fore this evening. We're not able to contest long puck outs. When will we realise this and come up with a game plan to vary our play? I think one of the only short puck outs we made this evening lead directly to the only goal we scored. Dublin had a plan to push up on our 6 backs for our puck outs so we would go long and we played directly into their hands. Micheal o Donoghue knew full well they were dominant on our long puck outs.

If an opposing team does this then our half forward line or midfielders have to show in space coming to look for the ball off eoin Murphy.

6 points now and at the very least we're in the qualifiers. A win or draw against wexford will get us into a leinster final but that performance this evening won't beat wexford.

    Full back line did ok.

Half back line were pulled all over the place and if paddy deegan is to continue there he needs to hold his position a lot better. It was wide open at times.

Cian Kenny notin the game at all.

Mossy and donnelly got through a lot of good work.

Eoin Cody only in the game in patches but got some crucial scores.

Tom phelan was ineffective the whole day as was Owen Wall when on the pitch.

It doesn't say much for the depth of our panel when fogarty and buckley have to come in to try and steady the ship as we were on the back foot for most of that second half. They've been excellent servants to the black and amber but we must have other options? Maybe not.

I suppose the only thing is the lads know a lot of improvements are needed to progress in the all ireland series and hopefully that starts against wexford in nowlan Park.

TJ needs to stop going past the 65 when it comes to taking frees, he missed every single one of them today.

John Donnelly stood up and dragged us through. I’ve said it before he is the most underrated hurler in the country. There was an idiot on this forum a few weeks back saying mossy and him shouldn’t be on the team. They’ve been outstanding for us this year. Hang you’re head in shame.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,888 ✭✭✭Charlie69

Bit harsh?…. Didn’t have his best day on the placed balls today but he hasn’t been too bad on them over the years no matter what distance.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,624 ✭✭✭me89

He's our best forward and the work rate is top class to go with it. We won so that idiot won't be online this week thankfully

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,822 ✭✭✭kksaints

It was very similar against Carlow last weekend he missed a number of long range frees again. He's getting older and isn't necessary the same player that he was so what he did in the past is somewhat immaterial in this aspect of the game. Now I'm certainly not calling for his immediate dropping from the starting lineup but it's certainly one aspect of his game that should be reconsidered because him driving wides often acts as a momentum boost for the opposition and revs up their crowd a lot more than misses from other players.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,888 ✭✭✭Charlie69

Maybe you have a point but if we had a long range free to draw or win a game in the last minute who would you want standing over it?

Positives we are unbeaten and everything is in our own hands,

NNegatives ,to many nit playing well enough, today wall and phelan.need all our forwards scoring and. Still no midfield

Looked like we were going to lose when we were 3 down. If we had, there would have been serious questions about Lyng playing Shane Murphy in midfield, Deegan at centre-back and Carey at wing back. Also huge questions about our tactics. The result shouldn't hide that we have serious problems. We have very little on the bench in the backs, midfield or forwards
