The extra steps was definately something that Kilkenny took full advantage of more than most. I give you Colin 10 Step Fennelly . But it's a joke now how endemic it is.

In fairness to Tipperary amd Kilkenny they seem to be the least likely to throw the ball and I agree Luke Meade threw the ball twice in the '1/2' with Connolly

The remarkable and embarrassing collapse in the Tipperary support is highlighted again tonight in tullamore tonight where the Offaly support was truly Phenomenal. And Offaly have experienced less success in recent years than Tipperary. It's almost as if Tipperary supporters cannot accept not being the Premier County in real life.

Some very weird posters obsessed with tipperary on this site. Tipp thread is mostly clare limerick posters at this stage.

Oisin can be a hype merchant too, he was screaming what a finish after Brian Hayes goal on Saturday, Bubbles was quick to tell him Eoin Murphy would be disappointed with it

  • Registered Users Posts: 801 ✭✭✭Glenomra

Probably just observing 'chickens coming home to roost'.

Your from clare, ye haven't won Munster since 98. Yere chickens are well roosted at this stage. Tipp support at minor final other night against clare was v good BTW, you probably weren't there to notice though.

2012 clare v waterford Munster championship. 12k turned up from both counties. These facts aren't aligning with Yere points about only tipperary having poor support. Don't let facts get in the way of yere story though I suppose.

I certainly was and even heard a few mutterings of 'Tip, Tip, Tip', which unsurprisingly fizzled out quickly. Whether we win regularly or not is relatively unimportant to Clare like most counties. We continue to support our team regardless as Cork did last Sunday and Offaly tonight. Whereas the Tipperary support has proven incredibly fragile. That's an opinion shared by most hurling supporters including Tipperary supporters that I have spoken to.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,409 ✭✭✭newhouse87

So what happened in 2012 or 2016 when 4 counties including clare cork limerick managed 16k fans between them for ko hurling. Oh so winning not important, well ye are pretty successful at not winning tbf. Haven't heard any kilkenny or cork supporter kick tipp much since sunday, respect between these counties.

No it’s just score difference between them in the matches against each other, not wins, losses and draws

Could the steps rule not be changed to seconds or something? There are obviously going to be cons but it might be easier for refs to enforce. The throwing of the ball is fairly out of control to be fair. Every team is at it.

In fairness, apart from a few recent posts about a poor turnout last Sunday from Clare and Limerick old, the Tipp forum is largely a one man/woman forum

A little perspective perhaps is needed on attendances of some counties aside from Tipp.

So far in Leinster hurling championship there has been attendances of approx

1 Galway v Kilkenny 9,000 (a paltry crowd for Leinsters two heavy hitters)

    2 Wexford v Dublin 9,000

    3 Dublin v Kilkenny 8,500

I don't know crowd for Carlow v Kilkenny but on the highlights it looked very small.

Also where were the Offaly fans in last years McDonagh Cup final? Looked a small crowd. And at the hammering by Tipp last year in preliminary quarter final it looked a small Offaly crowd on tv. Offaly are a county starved of success and the Offaly public have got behind this current team led by Screeney since the minor final v Tipp couple years ago and that years Leinster final. They now have a team they can be proud of and looked like every man, woman and child from Offaly was at last nights game. But that is most certainly not the norm.

Tipp crowd was down last week and against Limerick but i think the criticism has gone a little over the top at this stage.

No it's just the scoring difference. It's so that how badly you beat the weaker teams doesn't count. Rule 5 states that competitions can have their own bylaws.

True, most tipp supporters on premierview. V Active website with good contributions from other counties too.

Don't let facts ruin the narrative. Again 16k fans between cork clare limerick and Wexford in 2016 qualifiers. Not one limerick or clare poster criticising tipp have explained the poor attendance at that game. Many others games I can quote too but these posters don't deal with the facts. Hypocrisy is laughable. Tipp support was poor this year but all counties have down years when team going so bad. Its not unique to tipp as people are trying to make out.

I see that for the Clare v Tipp match, the referee will be Johnny Murphy from Limerick

He's a good referee and all, but

    • If Tipp win, Limerick cannot be eliminated regardless of what happens in their match
    • If Clare win or draw, there is a scenario where Limerick would be out of the championship

Is this not a bit of an uncomfortable spot to be putting poor Johnny Murphy into ?

If Waterford get the win and Clare-Tipp is tight, he'd be in a position that one decision could end the 5-in-a-row for his own county. Seems a bit odd.

The master fixture list for 2024 specifies that Leinster is decided by rule 5 c but that Munster is using a different system as allowed under rule 5.

5 c is the one that discounts games against the weaker teams which is why Leinster is using it

  • Registered Users Posts: 26,069 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

    Fair enough.

Every media outlet is reporting that it's scoring difference between the involved teams.

Now or never for Henry and Galway this weekend.

The steps rule is okay the way it is as it's easy to see/count if the rule is being broken or not. The 'advantage' that refs apply to how many steps a player may take if being fouled is a lot greyer and probably needs clarification alright.

A rule change is absolutely required for hand passing though at this stage as it is almost impossible to judge if there is separation between ball and hand with the current speed of the game. Quite simply change the rule so that the ball has to be played with the hurl, or the other hand (provided the hurl is not dropped).

I am seeing it being coached to kids now where hand passing (throwing) is preferred over stick passing for working the ball up the field and it's so disheartening to see. Hurling is slowly dying... Death by a thousand throws!

  • Registered Users Posts: 26,069 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Yep and he still isn't out of the fire if they win. At this stage I think it will take more than a Leinster title even.

Format bingo yet again but why can the top football counties get so many bites of the cherry while 3 top hurling counties will be out of the championship by Sunday evening. 3 teams qualify for the knockout stages in each group after playing a provincial championship in which for most counties is a training exercise

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,877 ✭✭✭✭Realt Dearg Sec

Who has it been a training exercise for? Can't think of any county that has had a handy run. If you're out after 4, or even 5 matches, you can have no complaints. It's the best system we've had so far. Just hope leinster can continue to improve and match the intensity in Munster.

  • Registered Users Posts: 38,386 ✭✭✭✭PTH2009

Format in Leinster would annoy ya

Lose to 'Antrim' but still end up in a very good position. Won't see that in dog eat dog munster

Laois and Offaly going out for those 'Preliminary QFs' for the craic

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,877 ✭✭✭✭Realt Dearg Sec

I noticed you edited the post I was responding to so that you didn't have to address the question.

Do 'Antrim' not deserve credit for making a championship interesting? Munster hurling and Munster rugby people would drive ye bananas with such pointless snobbery 😂

    Exactly.

Offaly v Tipp last year was about 7 or 8 to 1 in Tipps favour. Tipp brought 20,000 alone to the last round robin game last year.

3000 odd at Kilkenny v Antrim this year.

6000 odd at Wexford v Galway.

    Yet silence.

    2012 Munster semi final Clare v Waterford - 12,000

    2013 Leinster semi final Dublin v Kilkenny - 10,000

    2013 Munster Semi Final Clare v Waterford - 12,000

    2014 Galway v Kilkenny - 12,500

    2014 Waterford v Cork - 16,000

    2015 Wexford v Cork 11,000

2015 double header Limerick Clare Cork and Dublin - 25,000

2016 - 16,000 at a double header of Cork Clare Limerick and Wexford (three of the counties with the so called best supporters), 20,000 at the same double header back in 2012.

    2016 Leinster semi final Dublin v Kilkenny - 10,000

    2017 Munster semi final Limerick v Clare - 19,000

    2017 Kilkenny v Limerick in 2017 knockout qualifier - 15,000

    2018 Munster RR Waterford v Cork 14,000

and you could go on and on and on.

There was more Tipp fans in Semple last Sunday, about 12,000 of them maybe more, to support their struggling team than have showed up for any Galway, Wexford or Kilkenny game so far this year.
