Did my first Gravity event this year, so keen to do my first Grassroots in 2024 😁

Greats . Which of the rounds are you thinking of doing

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,175 ✭✭✭Top Dog

Try and get to Hush to begin with to see what I think, if all goes well then I'll get to as many of the rest as I can. Dates didn't really suit this year with my work pattern so I'm hoping next year will be better.

Hush will sell out in minutes. First race of the season combined with the weather this year will mean people have unfinished business there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,781 ✭✭✭Ceepo

To be fair I'd say they'll all sell out, some quicker than others. Most sold out in less than 10 minutes last year.

The weather was particularly bad for Mullaghmeen as well.

I'd like to race Hush myself with it being local, but I'll have to get more competitive, I've gone very recreational in my riding this year.

Or knowing when to cut your losses, and age semi gracefully in mediocracy 😂

Heads up that Grassroots for Hush 28th April, goes on sale next Monday, 8th April at 9pm.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,781 ✭✭✭Ceepo

Thanks. Not sure if I can make it to this, hopefully I'll know more before next Monday

Unfortunately I'm not going to be able to get to Hush. I did see that it sold out in 5 or 6 minutes though. Great to see that the demand is still so good for the Grassroots.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,781 ✭✭✭Ceepo

Unfortunately I'm not going to get to the next round in Union Woods in Sligo. I see that entries are still available for it. 1st grassroots that didn't sell out super fast, I wonder if the venue had something to do with it. I know a few down my way said they're it going because of the travel involved.

I believe Hush was a fantastic race, anyone form these parts do it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,803 ✭✭✭prunudo

Hush was fantastic, couldn't have asked for a better day, especially the washout last September.

Still places left for next round as far as I know. Actually wouldn't mind doing it, have heard good reports about Union Woods in the past.

I would have to do it as an over nighter though, and not really in a position to do that at present. And in reality, if down that way, it be shame not to try out Coolaney in the same trip.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,175 ✭✭✭Top Dog

Possibly an odd question, but anyway. I understand that there's a practice ban in place for a period of time before a race to allow time for stage marking, and not tear the place up prior to race day - but what's the story with regards walking the stages? Is it frowned upon, against any rules, or considered bad etiquette? I'll be doing an overnight stay for Sligo which means I'll be in the area tomorrow. As I've never ridden there before I was thinking of walking the place to get a feel for it, but don't want to doing anything that might go against the rules.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,781 ✭✭✭Ceepo

I don't think there is any issue walking the stages before hand. You could even offer the give them a hand taping 😉🤣

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,803 ✭✭✭prunudo

afaik, walking them is okay, unless it varies from club to club.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,175 ✭✭✭Top Dog

Be happy to if I'm there early enough 🙂

I ended up messaging them on Facebook after posting here, and they confirmed there's no problem at all. Taping is due to start around 2pm so if I'm finished in Coolaney (be rude not to stop in when up this far 😉), and over there early enough, then I'll definitely offer a hand.

Best of luck to you. Hope it's a great weekend, going by the weather forecast it might be a bit damp out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,439 ✭✭✭Wailin

How did you get on TD? Weather didn't play ball I'm guessing?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,781 ✭✭✭Ceepo

    I know it's it a GR event

But I see that the trail map is now up for the Gravity in Clonmel.

Just under 26k and approx 1000m.

They are using both sides if the of the hill which will give some great variety of trails. Some great trails including full Champs and Da long Wan which is approx 2k in length, will certainly make it a physical day..

Anyone planning on racing either mash up or the classic?

Sorry, not been on in a few days.

Weather was backwards - all forecasts said it'd be dry till lunch, then rain for the afternoon, and it was the opposite. Wasn't bad though as most of the stages were under heavy tree cover so only got a little wet and that evaporated with exertion.

3 short but enjoyable stages - think winning times were all just under 2mins. Plenty lòam, roots and rocks - almost all natural and next to nothing trail-centery. I was well out of my comfort zone, but its only by don't this stuff that I'll ever improve. So I did each stage twice, improved each time and was out the gap by 2pm (I had a 4 hour drive ahead of me).

I'd definitely do another, though I think I'm working for Mullaghmeen so hopefully I can do the one after.

I've entered the E-Bike Classic on the Sunday. Gonna be interesting now they've merged the 2 old categories into 1. Wondering will I beconserving battery between stages as I don't have a second to be going boost everywhere. I might do the mash-up too since I'll be there for practice Saturday anyway, but not sure if I wanna cough up another €55 for it.

    2️⃣ E-Bike Classic on Sunday:

    For Clonmel = Stage 1, 3, 5 twice + stage 2, 4, 6 once + Power Stage.So, 10 stages in total, no repeats.
    Please do stages 1, 1, 2, Power, 3, 3, before heading to 4.

🔋Note: There are no restrictions on swapping batteries or battery sizes

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,781 ✭✭✭Ceepo

I suppose it will depend on you battery capacity. I'm reading it that that classic is 26k for 6 stages, so you can add on a fair bit to do 10 stages which will include the power stage. The stage number order isn't post yet so I'm none the wiser to how long they are for the mash up. In terms of stage length /duration they will vary a bit, 2 of the stages should be between 90 to 120 seconds and the longest stage "Da long wan" is 1.95k and will be somewhere close to 6 mins. (of course this depends on how fast you are). This is a savage good stage with a huge variety of some very fast sections and some slower tech stuff, but it's not steep. (but I'm particularly bias as I build 90% of it) 🤣.

Not sure if anyone on here made it to Clonmel for the Gravity enduro.

It was a great weekend of mountain biking. Weather played a part as well, with dry dusty tracks, the trails were in fantastic condition. There was a few small taping changes to original trails but nothing major.

Good long day out with 26km and just under 1200m climbing.

Looking forward to the Grassroots now in September. There will be some different trails used from last year what I'm hearing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,439 ✭✭✭Wailin

Anyone going to mullaghmeen? Still plenty of entries available. Last years conditions, plus the fact it's in the middle of nowhere is probably putting people off.

I've never been so took a spin up yesterday. The muck there, even after the little rain we've had lately, is horrible. Very sticky and clogs up the tyres pretty quickly. If we get a lot of rain before the race it's not going to be pleasant.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,781 ✭✭✭Ceepo

No not heading there, for the reasons you mentioned.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,175 ✭✭✭Top Dog

E-bike Was just over 39km and 1700m. Finished stage 6 with 21% battery so put it in turbo for the spin back to race hq which was lovely. Spent most of the day in e-mtb and didn't have range anxiety which was good. Came across a couple of lads doing each stage only once as they didn't believe they had the capacity for the entire race so that might have had an impact on entries too.

Stages were brilliant. Confidence was lacking. Came off 3 times that i remember. Times were embarrassing. But! I completed it, didn't hold anyone up, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I plan on going back through the summer now to session some of the trails and try build the confidence.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,175 ✭✭✭Top Dog

Won't be going, for the reasons you've outlined? plus I'd have to take a day off work and drive up that morning from Cork due to being designated taxi driver for my better half for a concert on the Saturday night. Aiming for Carrick at the end of August as my next enduro all going well.

You seemed to have a good day out so.

If you are back up that way again, give me a shout I'd be happy to show you some of the other trails there as well.

Oh yeah, very much enjoyed it. Want to session Champs anyway as I wouldn't be the most competent jumper and I reckon that would be a good place to practice. I think I've done 4 Nire Valley Drops there now, along with 4 other days just riding with friends and I've enjoyed it every time. Some epic trails.

Appreciate the guide offer - may well take you up on it 🙂

Reminder: Entries for Clonmel grassroots are open this evening at 9pm

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,439 ✭✭✭Wailin

Got an entry. Looking forward to this. Long drive from Dublin but we might go down on the Saturday and camp overnight somewhere nearby

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,781 ✭✭✭Ceepo

Good stuff. There will be parking and camping across the road from the entrance to the wood. Race village is about 150m away.

While I know it a nice trip down. If you take the M8 to Cahir your only about 10 miles from the venue.

sigh As much demand as for an Oasis gig.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,439 ✭✭✭Wailin

Cheers Ceepo, hopefully the weather holds up for camping! Do you know if the trails used are on the canonhill side or Carey's castle, or even both?

    Sorry you missed out @Plastik

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,781 ✭✭✭Ceepo

Trails will be on Cannon hill side only. Trails will be , Eagle into Hot stepper, Hot stepper into a new trail, and full Deer. I was on to the org committee to include the top of Champ's as well as a bonus short trail. But I don't think they're going too. All the trail are very close together at the road crossing and only about 100m to the furthest from the race village so it should add to a bit of atmosphere.

Ah tis mighty to see it at the same time. I heard second hand that there were only something like 70 riders in Carrick for the Gravity Enduro on Sunday. Great to see grassroots doing so well, even at my own expense!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,803 ✭✭✭prunudo

Carrick looked like a big day, going by strava. I was surprised though, I didnt see much pushing of sales in the weeks leading up to it, or even much social media content, like them prepping trails or advising of practice ban.

No need to rely on second hand stories. The results are on the website https://gravityenduro.ie/carrick/

A lot more than 70, but also way down on the numbers it used to get a few years ago.

What kinda bike are people using these days for enduro.

Been awhile away from the trails would be interested in enduro next year.

I currently have a 120mm travel full suspension. I see some lads have 160 or so.

Do there be any short travel bikes out?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,781 ✭✭✭Ceepo

I haven't seen any 120mm travel. As far as I could see most full suspension are on 140mm minimum. Of course they're are a few lads riding hard tails too.

That said I don't do a huge amount of racing so it's possible there is way more 120mm out there.

What you could do is ride some of the trails you know have been used for some of the enduro races and see how comfortable you feel on them. I know all the trails in the grassroots races, while there is some drops and jumps everything has to rollable.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 148 ✭✭casion3

    Thanks for the feedback.

Plan is to visit an Enduro this year to get a feel of what's going on and join up with a club next year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,781 ✭✭✭Ceepo

Come the the grassroots enduro in Clonmel on the 15th. Should be a cracking race from a spectator pov, all the trails start almost in the same spot and run down beside each other, the race village is only 50m from the one trail and about 100m to the furthest trail. With parking only 200/300m from the race village

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 148 ✭✭casion3

    Sounds good.

is it easy to catch the trails in Sam's Farm in Dunmanway. It's a little closer to me and the date suits a little better

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,781 ✭✭✭Ceepo

Honestly I've no idea as I've been there. Sorry

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,439 ✭✭✭Wailin

Really good day out at Clonmel. Pity the weather didn't play ball, but the trails held up well. Camped the night before in the field. Not much sleep was had and I was a bit tired on the day but still enjoyed it.

Entries for round 5 open tonight. Only 180 slots available. Too far for me so not going to bother but I'd love to know what it's like.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,781 ✭✭✭Ceepo

Mad busy few days for myself. I was up there for a few hours on Thursday evening, and almost all day Friday and Saturday taping up, and putting out signs etc, think it was nearly 7pm when I leaving on Saturday evening. I met a few people who were camping over night on the road on the way, so maybe I was talking to you 🤔. One guy was selling a smashing Orbea Occam. Lovely bike.

Yes it was a pity about the rain on Saturday night and Sunday morning, it certainly dampened the trails, but not the spirits🤪. I was marshalling at the entrance to the car park from 8am until I had to hightail it down to marshal at end of stage 3 for the rest of the morning, but I did get out for a spin in the afternoon. I done stage 1 first, on the way up to stage 2, I left my light jacket at the water station, done stage 2, and halfway back up the hill I realized I left the timing chip on the sleeve of the jacket 🥹. So I had to re do it again, which put me under a bit of pressure to get in all the stages. I ended up doing 4 stages in 2 hrs and 16km done. As you said, the stages held up really well considering the rain and the volume of traffic on them. I know a few lads that done some of the stages 3 times. The day brighten up nicely towards the end and was perfect for the prize giving. I think most people went away happy enough, lots of people complementing how easy it was to get from parking to the race village and on to the stage starts. I think that's it for Grassroots in Clonmel, as I believe they move them around every 2 years, I also heard that GR will go back to 4 rounds next year.

I didn't even try to get an entry for Sam's Farm last night. Just to much hassle really
