I love the confusion where some people thought "double IPA was so called because it was IIPA, with 2 "I" s - as in, it was Double I, PA.

Not sure if it's suitable for this thread, but don't see a general thread or one for Q&As………

A couple of summers ago, one of the bigger German weissbier brauerei had 12 packs of a lower %, hoppy, lighter version of their beers on sale here. I got it in a couple of off licences and ended up buying nothing else that whole summer. Then……it was gone. Never heard of it again. Didn't reappear the following summer and hasn't been seen since. It was lovely and I'd love to a) confirm I wasn't hallucinating and b) get my hands on it again.

Does it ring any bells for anyone?

It was almost certainly Erdinger or Paulaner, probably the former. It was called Sommerbrau or Summer beer, something along those lines. It had a plain cream label with the logo and name of the beer in green emblazoned across it. I only saw it in 330ml bottles and only ever in 12 packs.

Every now and again it pops into my head and I can never get the name right.

    Edit: FOUND IT!

After typing the above post, I tried a few different variations of Sommer/Summer and found this:

I don't suppose anyone has seen this anywhere?

Just clicked into that link you put up and it says the beer is no longer produced by the brewery

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 11,838 Mod ✭✭✭✭BeerNut

It was marked out of production in 2022 but there are more recent check-ins so I've changed that.

The brewery mentions it on their US site, but not the German one. I've never seen it here.

It was literally available for maybe a 10 or 12 week period about 6 years ago, then disappeared.

I hate it when that happens. Same with that Coalface black IPA, soon as I developed a taste for it…………poof!

Now that you mention it, it's an injustice that lots of the Carrig beers were revived when it become BRÚ, but not Coalface.

Found a bottle of kriek in the back of the press, BB date is 07/21. Still drinkable ye reckon?

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 11,838 Mod ✭✭✭✭BeerNut

It has so much sugar in it, it's basically jam, so I doubt anything will have gone wrong in it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 562 ✭✭✭Yeah Right

    Definitely still drinkable.

I think my personal record is a bottle of beer from Barbados that expired in 2004, which I drank in 2013. I think it was called Banks's or something like that. Didn't notice anything off with it and definitely no ill-effects afterwards.

Have two six-pack of Guinness that expired in February 1985 on display in the bar, half tempted to try them now!

Anyone spot any good prices on 4 packs of Hoegaarden or Leffe recently? I used to enjoy both a lot but haven't had either in a couple of years now.

The crafty brewing company American style, pale wheat ale from Lidl.

Lovely beer. Great for these sunny days.

I've been enjoying 9 white deer bán blended with their rua, lately. About 3:2. It's lovely.

Recently I had Nocturne Export stout made by Rye River, 6% ABV.

I was impressed, I bought it again.

On offer at 2.50 in TESCO.

Somewhat similar to O'Haras Leann Folláin.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 11,838 Mod ✭✭✭✭BeerNut

I had been buying loads when it was €3 and now feel gypped it's €2.50. Still buying loads, it's a superb beer.

But craft beer is too expensive, as everybody knows.

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,380 ✭✭✭✭Geuze

    It is indeed.

2.50 for 50cl of 6% beer is a good price.

Was it in Lidl, or is it only available in TESCO?

I must buy more for Sat night.

I've tried all the Crafty brews and most of them were very good, but not that brown ale, I didn't like Newky Broon either so maybe it's the style…

Fingal County Council are certainly not competent to be making decisions about the most important piece of infrastructure on the island. They need to stick to badly designed cycle lanes and deciding on whether Mrs Murphy can have her kitchen extension.

    Nocturne isn't in Lidl.

Land and Labour's Saison Salamino is fantastic in Bierhaus, Cork.

Yip … I'm a recent convert. Lovely stout. My local Supervalu were doing it for €3 but have put it up to €3.35 … my local Centra still have it @ €3. Must check Tesco

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,859 ✭✭✭RayCon

Correct unfortunately. They do the Crafty Irish Stout (from the same brewer) @ €2.19 per bottle but it isn't a patch on the Nocturne

10 km run done today, with my first decent time in nearly 4 years, so ye know what that means. (I was too sick to do my 10 mile run in April so I had to make up for that with a hilly jog around Kilkee this week.)

DOT Brew. Barrel Aged Peated Barley Wine aged in Oloroso barrels for 2.5 years, then finished in ex-Rum barrels. A massive 18.2% ABV for the 330 ml bottle, making it the strongest beer I've ever bought. No carbonation. Smells awesome - you can smell the peat from a yard away. Tastes even better. Wow.

    I have three questions.

    (1) I noted in TESCO that cans of Murphy and Beamish stout are both 4.0%. These used to be 4.2% or 4.3%? What has happened?

    (2) I would like to try Czech-brewed Staroprammen. The 66cl bottles in TESCO and the 33cl bottles in boxes in Lidl are both brewed in the UK. Is it just the 50cl that is brewed in Prague?

    (3) Is there any/much dunkel lager available in typical supermarkets? I am not looking for dunkel weissbier, I am looking for dunkel lager. I hope I am explaining that correctly.

    (1) Possibly due to the rejigging of UK duty rates, if they're supplying the same brew into both markets. Otherwise, cost cutting.

    (2) Yes but 'czech' the labels carefully as even this could go UK. 😠

    (3) Lidl do one sometimes.

Fingal County Council are certainly not competent to be making decisions about the most important piece of infrastructure on the island. They need to stick to badly designed cycle lanes and deciding on whether Mrs Murphy can have her kitchen extension.

    What's the Lidl dunkel?

My local SuperValu has occasionally stocked Weihenstephaner Tradition Bayrisch Dunkel, but otherwise I've only seen it in specialty beer shops.

Their own brand, Alpenfest when they have German food in. I only tried it once and didn't like it that much so can't 100% swear it wasn't a weissbier, but my recollection is that it was not.

Edit: it was called Alpenfest Schwarzbier

Ah yes, I know the schwarzbier. I wouldn't count it as a dunkel but it does have a lot in common. Outside of Oktoberfest they have sold it as Perlenbacher Schwarzbier though I've not seen that in a few years.
