Phoenix is not a signature event this year. Full field with cut and all the better for it. Plus we'll have Shane to cheer on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,026 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

That's great, looking forward to it. One of my favourite tournaments, just so much entertainment and so much can happen over the final four holes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,532 ✭✭✭✭Mushy

Whatever about wgc events as a whole, the no matchplay events just makes every weekend dull over time. Especially asthe course was so good for matchplay.

Signature events are just a poor, tame response to LIV, can see why Rory is saying PIF investment is needed in the sense that its better to have them on their side in terms of money, the inevitability of it all is here

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,026 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

You don't need all this money. Every top golfer will be worth a couple of hundred million in the forties.

    Who needs anymore than that?

Tiger could have doubled his net worth by joining them but he didn't.

They need a principled player to stand up and tell the truth about these Saudis and what they've done.

To say that anybody joining their tour is nothing short of a cretin.

How would you think that would play out? I'll tell you how, the PGA tour wins. The fans would be fully behind it and they'd start booing the 'cretins' at majors. The Saudis would see this and decide it's time to leave golf.

    Got to respect Spieths stance.

On Wednesday Spieth said the PIF were not necessarily needed for the PGA Tour anymore given the $3 billion investment by the Strategic Sports Group, which includes Liverpool FC’s owners.

RMcI said the Saudis “wouldn’t have been too happy” about Spieth’s comments, and he had a “frank discussion” over an hour-long phone call with Spieth. He said not having PIF as a partner is “not an option” for golf.

“They are still sitting out there with hundreds of billions of dollars, if not trillions, that they’re gonna pour into sport. If I were PIF and I was hearing that coming from here, the day after doing this SSG deal, it wouldn’t have made me too happy, I guess?”

Spieth called RMcI to check in after noticing the 34-year-old had left a group chat comprised of top Tour players. “I just want to remove myself from the fray a little bit,” RMcI said.

I'll bet he does! His pals Jimmy Dunne and Yasir Al-Rumayyan will have told him such.

Oh I agree with you, players should be called out and heckled for it. Looks like where Rory is now coming from is a position of one where he realises that pga tour cant compete long term with Saudis. Its exactly what they want, splinter the tour then get involved that way.

Do like how groups working with LIV have revealed how theyve been threatened with jail time in Saudi if they comply with the investigation, what lovely guys.

I see Cristobal Del Solar shot 57 in a Korn Ferry tour tournament today, lowest ever score in a PGA sanctioned event

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,749 ✭✭✭coillcam

And he still wouldn't win the St Brigid's Open in Tipperary.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,532 ✭✭✭✭Mushy

Think it's the senate or something looking at the merger. Groups are those hired by LIV, consultant groups

The KFT is arguably a better standard than an average European tour event these days

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,952 ✭✭✭The Big Easy

I don't know the ET although decimated under Pelley is still probably underated generally.

The 10 or so guys that have recently got their cards (granted they were some of the best performers) have been dominating early leaderboards on the PGA.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,905 ✭✭✭Deeper Blue

I just read that the course played effectively less than 6000 yards when altitude is taken into account, so I withdraw my previous comment 😂

Pavon has been class to be fair, McIntyre seems to be really struggling though, interesting to see some of the journeyman Euros over there

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,026 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

When Scottie Scheffler is holing putts it's all over.

Charlie Hoffman trying to hang in there. He'd be the dream winner for the sponsors as he's sponsored by them.

Scottie I think is the best tee to green player I've ever seen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,749 ✭✭✭Dr. Bre

Scottie going for three in a row at the Phoenix .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,043 ✭✭✭✭FixdePitchmark

I know Europe just hammered America in the Ryder cup and maybe this particular event , is a particular event - but it is a bit depressing not one European in the top 20

Rory and Rahm - not around a big problem for me - I actually Like Scheffler (unusually) - but I'm kind of struggling to get too excited about this batch of yanks / pros.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,026 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Well Scheffler is the best in the world without question. He was better than Rahm before he left.

I couldn't care less if there's Europeans in it. I'd like to see Irish players contending but I prefer Americans to continental Europeans.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,043 ✭✭✭✭FixdePitchmark

I guess I'd be in this camp a bit in fairness - just a bit stark . Look, is one event - but I can't ignore LIV at this point.

The number of names that have left the PGA - the split of the tours. Players don't play every event like this one for example.

So if a few stars are at LIV or not at the event you are watching like Hovland / Rory / .Rahm at LIV -

I'm just wondering has the game the depth to carry two tours - This top 10 not exactly stay up past midnight / I'd be interested in Young - but they don't show him.

What am I getting at - there are less and less stars to carry events.

I just can't warm to the Phoenix Open at all....the frat boy behaviour from the galleries gets old really fast!

A bunch of American t**ts who can't hold their booze.

I was disappointed for Hoffman though, I would have liked to have watch him get the win.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,026 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Yeah I was gutted for Hoffman too.

I love the Phoenix Open. It's different and that makes it special. I hardly ever drink, I think it's five times in eight years and three of those were a couple of bottles on my patio, but I'd love to spend a day on that 16th hole.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,605 ✭✭✭blue note

I'd love to see a mixed tour. The amount of talk about it is an indicator on how soon it's going to happen, but there would be real advantages of it. One of the big ones being that you could have different categories - men, women and overall. So with all the dull finishes we have on the PGA / European tours where one guy has a good lead and no-one ever gets close to him, with a mixed tour there should still be interest in who will win their categories. What would also be interesting is which courses / weather suit the guys and which suit the girls. To me it would add dimensions that would be interesting.

The biggest problem I'd see with it would be the reduction in numbers of men / women playing. You could add a day to the comp and not have everyone play every day before the cut - but 4 day comps are long enough. You could play two courses pre cut. You could just accept that you used to have 150 lads in a field, now you'll have 75. There are ways you could work it, but you could be guaranteed everyone would be unhappy about elements of it. Then there's the qualification criteria, world ranking points and many more problems. Plus the fact that we have a Scandinavian mixed every year and no-one watches it.

But all that said, I'd still like to see it. If they set it up, I'll watch it from time to time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,026 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

The LPGA is a great tour in its own right. I watch it regularly.

I think they should have a mixed foursomes/fourball event every year.

  • Registered Users Posts: 305 ✭✭IrishOwl...

Whatever about the craic in the stands at the 16th, I like that and its something different. Its the rest of the spring break behaviour for the other 17 holes would wear on me very quick...Some of the videos and clips shared from the weekend were ridiculous!

I'm not flying half way across the world, playing all that money to go the event, just to be surround by some over-weight obnoxious a**holes with their tops off, slamming beers and roaring ridiculous quotes after every single shot!

    Sorry, rant over.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,836 ✭✭✭Trampas

PGA tour will have best viewing numbers of all worldwide golf this year over the next 4 days.

Probably more than liv all year combined

The commentary blow some smoke up Eldrick backside at times. It’s great about having a cut this week as he is a traditionalist. Max 20 get cut but once you’re in 10 shots you’re in. Might lose around 15 players and you can be sure most probably happy to be going home and work on their game as these players not stuck for money. Tv companies sweating that eldrick makes the cut.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,026 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

It was nice to see loads of Tiger to try and guage exactly where he's at. Given all the time he's been away from competitive golf it was a very good showing.

Scottie wasn't at his best but still shot 68 with a couple of missed short putts. All he needs is one decent day with the putter she he'll blow the rest of the field away.

  • Registered Users Posts: 778 ✭✭✭Pdoghue

Great to watch Tiger last night.

He hit two unbelievable shots on 18.. first a shank from the middle of the fairway (caused by a back spasm he said), and then a miraculous recovery from behind a tree. Almost got the par!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,836 ✭✭✭Trampas

First hole must be up there with one of the easiest starting holes in golf. Could easily be changed to a par 4 for this event

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,468 ✭✭✭BrianD3

Riviera looks fantastic on TV. As a result, the Genesis is my favourite tournament outside of the Majors.

    Is Tiger withdrawing ?

He looks like he is in pain..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,749 ✭✭✭Dr. Bre

    Tiger withdraws . What happened?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,468 ✭✭✭BrianD3

I'd say he has destroyed the toilet by now. And his jocks.

With the way he was swinging and his walking being ok (for him), it doesn't seem like an injury

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,532 ✭✭✭✭Mushy

Spieth disqualified for signing for a wrong score

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,952 ✭✭✭The Big Easy

Strange to see Harrington playing the Korn Ferry this week, but he's started with 3 3s to go from +1 to -2

He's still chasing a Masters ticket and is playing next week as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,749 ✭✭✭Dr. Bre

Is Harrington playing the Mexico open? Which is PGA tour

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,952 ✭✭✭The Big Easy

Yes, just a little strength of field joke on my part

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,163 ✭✭✭✭Mantis Toboggan

Korn ferry 😂 although looking at the leaderboard I'd forgive you for thinking that!!

    Free Palestine 🇵🇸

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,952 ✭✭✭The Big Easy

5 birdies in 7 for Harrington now, obviously got his scorings boots on today!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,026 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

I love these tournaments where you have very few, if any, top 20 players.

Those WGC events were great where you'd have a second tournament with none of the top 50 in them.

I'll always watch that over a short field event.

Crazy final round by McCarthy, birdies the last 7 holes to get into a playoff with Bhatia, who had to hole a 10 footer himself to make the playoff.

92 putts for the week from McCarthy, mental.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,532 ✭✭✭✭Mushy

Mccarthy with 7 birdies in a row to almost nick the event (8 on back 9 in total), insane viewing. Bhatia then sinks about a 15 footer to get the playoff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,401 ✭✭✭AyeGer

McCarthy with the joint best ever putting week on the PGA Tour with 92 putts for the 4 days.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,749 ✭✭✭Dr. Bre

    McCarthy in the water

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,532 ✭✭✭✭Mushy

After all that he chunks it into the water

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,905 ✭✭✭Deeper Blue

A record round and then chunks it in the drink like an 18 handicapper. You'd wonder if he'll ever get a win at this rate

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,026 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Akshay is a real talent. That's a huge win for him. He won last year at the Barracuda or the Barbasol not sure which one but definitely one or other but this one is a much bigger win.

Hes so skinny, like a skeleton with a head. 😁

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,532 ✭✭✭✭Mushy

Grayson Murray died, only 30. That's shocking stuff, very sudden. Was literally playing this week

Jesus, what happened there? Illness or an accident?

Seeing there that he was playing in the current event on PGA tour and withdrew with 2 holes left to play yesterday citing illness? That seems really sudden
