Watching Kilkenny city getting milled out of it. Several loud rumbles

And now the storms that were in Waterford are heading back to Wexford.

The wind, breeze, whatever today has gone in all directions. N to S. E to W. Now W to E.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,254 ✭✭✭pauldry

Claremorris is over 30mm now but rain easing now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,574 ✭✭✭cml387

Absolutely nothing in Clonmel at all, all day dry and warm, another bust. Ah well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,254 ✭✭✭pauldry

Here's a picture if Strandhill yesterday. I know there was 29mm and plenty of lightning there. But is this really real?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,811 ✭✭✭Dazler97

Omg 😲 it looks real , bolt's can go everywhere in some thunderstorms

An active few days, lightning maps for the record.

Moving into a different airmass and quieter for convective weather over the coming days.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,811 ✭✭✭Dazler97

Wow even look at northern France at the last picture that's incredible 😲 we've had our fair share as well but may seems to be the most likely month or most frequently to have thunderstorms, but if we get summer heat of 28c or above the thunderstorms then will be interesting too say the least

Sunday looking like a very showery convective day, with very cool air aloft aiding the instability and occluded fronts and troughs transiting the country with a possible negative upper trough. Will learn more over the coming days if it continues to look active and a better idea of locations.

A couple of tiemlapse videos from the stormy day on Tuesday.

The first shows a very pronounced area of rotation that is seen in centre of screen at the start of the video and is seen spinning around as it moves to the right:

The second is looking in the opposite direction and you can see the same large area of rotation as it passes almost overhead, from around the 0:30 mark. Additionally, at about 01:25, what looks like a fairly large (rotating) funnel appears around the centre of screen, which dissipates shortly after:

In both video, you can clearly see just how dynamic the winds were with regards to direction.

Are we still looking good for thunderstorms tomorrow???

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 12,233 Mod ✭✭✭✭Meteorite58

I think so anyway. No great temperatures on the lower levels maybe up to 14 or 15C or touching 16C in a few spots) but movement in the moist atmosphere giving vorticity from the upper low and trough which appears to be initially tilted negatively and upper pool of fairly cold air and lower down the passage of troughs and occluded front with low level shear and some Deep layer shear, not huge amount but enough to aid convection to a height to produce hail and thunderstorms. Convergence looks to play an important part again tomorrow and I've made an attempt below to where I think might have the most activity primarily from convergence zones and the passage of the upper cold pool coinciding with peak diurnal heating in the afternoon. Just my own opinion.

Nice Satellite pic showing the growing convection meeting the converging winds and producing heavier rain.
