Sligo Local Council Elections 2024

I'm not exactly sure when the elections are, or who the runners and riders are, but I got my first election flyer from the Labour Party today.

Always a fasincating time. Looking forward to the jostling and sniping and various election issues the candiates come up with, pot-holes, new bypasses needed, noise issues, new bus routes, dog fouling etc and the accompanying Ocean FM debates and interviews.

Boards has always been a great place to share opinions and predictions. Lets get the election party started.

Current gov have failed miserably on Health, Crime & Housing

No FF, FG or GP politician is getting my vote this time, no matter what they promise.

    (Local or national)

Who I am left to vote for?? That's the bigger question for me...

  • I agree entirely. I guess like many, I’ve been a one party voter for many years. But that’s over. From here on, I’m going to scrutinise each manifesto and promise. Same as yourself, at this stage I really don’t know who’s going to get my vote.

  • Local Elections in May or June. No date decided as yet. But I'm sure the local vote-getting activities are soon to begin in earnest.

  • This should be interesting. James Conway confirms he will stand as Irish Freedom Party Candidate.

From memory, as an Independent he went a fair distance in the count at the 2020 elections.

  • Those interested in the recent enough history of Sligo Local Elections might wish to spend 20 minutes listening to this interesting and humorous podcast covering the 1982 Local Election manifesto for “Sligo Leitrim Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Constituents by Lying and Cheating Politicians” and again in 1987 and 1994 when the Party changed its name to “The All Night Party”.

  • Aontú have announced Graham Monaghan as their local election candidate for the Sligo-Strandhill region.

A lot of new first-time candidates. Should be some interesting interviews on Ocean FM.

Glad to see a thread on this. Heres a list of candidates from what I can gather online. Errors and Omissions excepted!

    Ballymote-Tubbercurry - 14 so far for 7 seats
FG: Martin Connolly, Patrick Cleary, Dara Mulvey, Gerard Mullaney
FF: Liam Brennan, Barry Gallagher, Keith Henry, Paul Taylor
SF: Jason Gorman, Jennifer Van Aswegen, Donal O'Connor
    IND: Michael Clarke, Joe Queenan
    IFP: James Conway

Don't see any big shocks here. FG could lose one to FF. Also be interesting to see where Baker FF seat goes to.

Sligo Drumcliffe - 8 so far for 5 seats
    FG: Tom Fox, Thomas Walsh
    FF: Edel McSharry, Donal Gilroy
    SF: Thomas Healy
    IND: Marie Casserly, Colm McGurran
    IFP: Amanda Gallagher

Think it'll be the same 5 sitting ones elected. Internal FF battle will be great craic given the history.

Sligo Strandhill - 9 so far for 6 seats.
    FG: Fergal Nealon
    FF: Tom McSharry
    SF: Arthur Gibbons, Pauline Donnelly
    LAB: Nessa Cosgrove
    AON: Graham Monaghan
    PBP: Gino O'Boyle
    IND: Declan Bree
    Green: Johnny Gogan

The two retirements of the women Cllrs is disappointing from a gender balance option. FF could lose their second seat here but to who is the question.

  • Thats fab! I was just thinking that the final list must be nearly complete. It's going to be an interesting one for sure. It must have been real tough for Blaine Gaffney and Nessa Cosgrove in the last local elections, both came so so close. I think Nessa Cosgrove is again going to have a very strong vote, probably increased and she deserves it, to stick with her principles and to go back at it, good on her. Mighty. I'd put my dollar on her winning a seat.

  • Ballymote/Tubbercury. (Data wont copy over as easy).

    Elected: Votes on First Count

    Martin Baker FF 1,432

    Michael Clarke Non-Party 1.564

    Marin Connolly FG 1,011

    Gerard Mullaney FG 1,523

    Dara Mullvey FG 1, 497

    Joe Queenan NP 1,737

    Paul Taylor FF 1,886

  • Focusing on the Sligo-Strandhill area, lots of interesting angles. eg: Will the strong traditional MacManus SF vote transfer easily to Gibbons/Donnelly? Similarly, will the strong Rosaleen O'Grady vote transfer to FF candidates? Blaine Gaffney came so close, but I think his votes were not necessarily a FG vote and had a younger voter (i guess). Will Kilgannon retain the traditional FF vote? How will newcomers Monaghan (Aontu) and Beirne (FG) fare on the first count and transfers? Can Beirne rely on a traditional FG vote? The individual campaigns and impact on the doorstep will be the deciding factors in this election.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26 OpenAllHours

Beirne is not running so FG's eggs are all in Nealons basket and he will take a seat. Bree and O'Boyle will also be fine as will Tom McSharry. SF will get one seat most likely Arthur Gibbons but maybe he'll have to hand it back to Chris MacManus if he doesn't win an MEP seat.

So that leaves one seat less and I think it'll be between Kilgannon FF and Cosgrave LAB. Kilgannon has been in and out of the Council more often than the postman collecting the post so he will do well and living close to where O'Grady was won't do him any harm. On the other hand Cosgrave is a totally different option, a young woman who seems determined. It'll be a toss up between them and will greatly depend on where the votes below them go. Every one not mentioned but running will do well to see 300 votes each I would say.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26 OpenAllHours

In Ballymote/Tubbercurry the biggest talk in the election last time was the postal vote scandal but sure nothing came of it. The geographic size of the area is completely ridiculous. I think you'll see both Queenan and Clarke elected in West Sligo despite there being more challengers there. Apple Tax man Conway seems to have gone very quiet since his announcement into the field from the far right Irish Freedom Party and I don't see him featuring, yet ironically had he stayed Independent he may have, but he let his true colours show.

Mulvey and Mullaney are the most experienced FG Cllrs and will hold on so that's four of the seven filled. Taylor will hold his seat you would imagine given his poll topping performance last time and the only sitting Cllr for them. Then it's a case of who holds Bakers seat. Henry in Ballymote might stand the best chance given he went before and was a Cllr for a time.

So then its down to the last seat with probably Connolly FG, Gallagher FF and the strongest SF (whoever that is, sorry I'm not from this constituency) all in contention.

Haven't studied Drumcliffe closely enough to make a guess at it yet. Anyway it'll be getting busy from now.

  • @Open All Hours. Super analysis and commentary and you're probably be spot on. The FF vote for Kilgannon will be interesting, although I think the younger voters might not have the same loyalty as their seniors? So really, (in Sligo-Strandhill area) not too many surprises expected apart from Cosgrove being in with a good chance of getting a seat?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26 OpenAllHours

yeah I’d be thinking Cosgrave and Kilgannon fighting it out for the last there

Had a browse at Sligo/Drumcliffe over the weekend. I think you’ll see Casserly, Walsh, Fox and Healy in without too much fuss. The big question is Gilroy or McSharry. I don’t see any of the others really challenging and to be honest there’s very few declared anyway. What is it 8 for 5. There’s two seats south of Sligo town and at least two north of it. McSharry is the only one who can unseat any of the present crew but I don’t see FF getting two. I’d give her the nod only slightly against Gilroy. If he leaks any votes in North Sligo to Casserly he’ll be in danger of losing to McSharry.

Drumcliffe will be interesting. T Walsh or M Casserly will top the poll

T Healy in big trouble, hasnt lifted a finger in Collooney and his misguided party loyalty in opposing Greenway Proposals will cost him dearly locally

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3 duineeile

FF didnt want Gilroy, that was clear from the outcome of the convention. Mind you, there's many a person in North Sligo that dont want him either

I'd agree with most of your assessment there though the recent kerfuffle over the Art Deco might not end well for Mulvey and Mullaney in terms of pulling votes from Ballymote - Mulvey always polls well in Coolaney area though so will likely get in. I think Henry has a good chance, Ballymote managed to shoot themselves in the foot not electing a councillor who lives in the town last time out so I'm not sure that happens again. Queenan and Clarke will walk in any votes the others pull off them initially will go back to them eventually. Taylor will be in again too given his profile I suspect. I've never heard of any of the SF candidates but expect one of them to squeak into a seat. Mulvey, Taylor, Henry, Queenan, Clarke, one SF and a toss up for the other seat between the other FF candidates and Mullaney imo.

I agree on Conway, he'd have probably been a real threat had he not declared for UKIP - sorry, their Irish branch the Irish Freedom Party. But that and his latest nonsense with vandalism has shown his true colours for sure

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3 duineeile

No love lost for Healy in North Sligo either based on the art work on his posters

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26 OpenAllHours

I see nominations have opened and will close this weekend. Will we have any last minute additions to the tickets across the county? Sligo Drumcliffe seems to be the shortest ballot paper with is it just 3 not to be elected unless I'm missing someone else. Only 6 in with a shout in my book anyway.

In town I think there's only 7 in with a serious chance and out the country in Ballymote-Tubbercurry probably 10 out of the 15 with any serious chance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 447 ✭✭Mullinabreena

I don't think FF or FG have anyone standing in West Sligo. It's cut off from the rest of the Tubbercurry-Ballymote district with the Ox Mountains. It seems like a missed opportunity to capitalise on west Sligos isolation from the rest of the district.

FG have Patrick Cleary who's from Enniscrone… don't think FF have anyone alright but Clarke and Queenan normally gobble up all the votes out there so will be interesting to see if Cleary makes any inroads on them. SF also have Jennifer van Aswegen from Dromore West so it could be interesting to see if either of the established party candidates out there can sway people off the independents. Clarke has big signs up in Ballymote and has been canvassing the area heavily at the moment, perhaps a sign he's a bit worried?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26 OpenAllHours

Interesting. Or perhaps as you mentioned before when Ballymote didn't elect someone from their own town he feels they might do the same and wishes to cash in?

Are people receiving canvassers? I've only had two so far in the Sligo-Strandhill area.

Three at the door, one as I was going to the shop. Fair point on that re: Clarke actually, I didn't think of it that way!

Clarke has been canvassing Tubbercurry too plus lots of poster up in the area. He called to my house as did Gorman from SF. I wasn't at home both times.

Right I'm going to be brave and two weeks out call each area with the poll topper. These are in no particular order.

    Sligo-Strandhill:
Bree, O'Boyle, Gibbons, MacSharry, Nealon. Kilgannon and Cosgrove to fight it out for the last and I'll give the nod to Cosgrove as she should do better on transfers. Bree to top the poll.

    Sligo-Drumcliffe:
Casserly, Healy, Walsh, Fox. The FF battle starts then and I'm going to pluck for Gilroy but this is a real toss up I think. Walsh to top the poll.

    Ballymote-Tubbercurry:
Clarke, Queenan, Taylor, Henry, Mulvey, Mullaney. Then its the Tubbercurry battle between Connolly and Gallagher. I'll go with Gallagher. Clarke to top the poll based on what posters are saying here that he's putting in a big campaign outside his area.

So overall that'll give a council of 5 FF, 5 FG, 4 IND,2 SF, 1 PBP, 1 LAB. Not exactly seismic change!

Anyone else to put their head on the block?

we have 2 easy to read signs on our front door . one says 'NO CANVESSERS PLEASE' the other underneath says ' No Junk Mail please' , we have even asked our postman politely to, if we get election bumpf , can they just put it in one of the outside bins for us - yet still we get canvassers from the parties on the step waiting for reply from the doorbell and their litter posters/leaflets through the letterbox! - they come at the most inconvenient times , half of them we have never heard of or seen over the years so dont just be turning up for votes for your own gain - we already know who we are voting for and have for a while now . - if we wanted to seek out your blurbs and promises and what you stand for we would have seek you out , not wait for you to descend on our property!

I dont want to single out any particular politician but take last night for example - we looked back later at footage and 2 women going around in our area on behalf of Cllr. Martin Connolly FG Tubbercurry (never heard of him) - the women read the signs on the door and then still proceeded to post the leaflet through the letter box after reading the signs! - they are not the only ones and I am sure in this next couple of weeks will not be the last!

Don't really know the other areas but Ballymote/Tubbercurry I think Taylor will top the poll actually. Mulvey, Clarke and Queenan safe enough bets too. Last three seats there'll be a battle in Tubber between Connolly, Gallagher and Gorman of SF as you say so one seat there. Another potential battleground is Riverstown and the surrounding area for Martin Bakers seat. Mullaney might have a fight there with SF running Donal O Connor who is from Geevagh. Henry to pick up the final seat then.… I'd expect an anti-government party vote pushing one of the SF candidates into a seat if I'm honest. Not sure which one though.

You complain about politicians you say you never heard of yet you don’t want them to call to give them a chance to introduce themselves and what they’re about?

I happily accept all canvassers and literature as I can only imagine it’s a tough enough job without being impolite. A neighbour doesn’t ever vote and she has no canvassers up on the window for the last few weeks and that’s fine but at the same time she won’t give out about any of them because she has decided not to engage in the electoral process.

yes thats about it - I dont need to have a politician call around the house to have heard of him/her I watch the news on TV and listen to the local radio station and read local news online - if i havent heard of a particular candidate and what they are doing/have achieved then I dont think they would be worthy of a vote.
What would they do if they did come around and i saw them and spoke to them they would either get an earful about what is not getting done , or they would promise me things that they cannot deliver or keep because all they want is a vote to get them in. Its a form of door to door salesmen , people coming around door to door to sell raffle tickets, Jehova witnesses , eir and electricity reps coming around and knocking on the doors for their gain - I dont like them calling on me either.

Now now Andy! Comparing Jehovah Witnesses to Eir Reps is an insult to the JW's. 😂

😁 True I suppose - point being they are all uninvited

Yea I’m like that too, not interested in any of them and despite my no canvassing sign I’m getting all their leaflets too.

I dont think I have much confidence in any candidate who cannot follow simple instructions of clear signs on a front door by the letterbox

Have to wonder about their motivations for getting involved in all this. I barely have 5 minutes to myself with work and family commitments, they must be financially well off to take time off work and family to go around annoying people at their front doors in the evenings, especially when most would have been working during the day and want to wind down in the evening .

precisely - evenings and weekends , you know relax and chill time, maybe watch telly or something in the evening or going out whatever, not get het up discussing politics on the doorstep with them and hearing false promises of what they will do if you vote for them, or what they have achieved since being in power have been doing good, and pushing for, in the last month because there is an election coming up.

I suppose they choose evening and weekends to call around because most of the time they wont find people at home in the daytime.

So just 8 days out from the election anyone else want to get in with their predictions?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26 OpenAllHours

Making some slight alterations to my predictions based on some conversations with people in different areas at work. Looking forward to the count, will Ocean FM be doing their YouTube feed again?

    Sligo-Strandhill:
Bree, O'Boyle, Gibbons, MacSharry, Nealon. Kilgannon and Cosgrove to fight it out for the last and I'll give the nod to Cosgrove as she should do better on transfers. Bree to top the poll.

    Sligo-Drumcliffe:
Casserly, Healy, Walsh, Fox. McSharry to pip Gilroy for the FF seat. Walsh to top the poll.

    Ballymote-Tubbercurry:
Clarke, Queenan, Taylor, Henry, Mulvey, Mullaney. Then its the Tubbercurry battle between Connolly and Gallagher. I'll go with Connolly just about but my source said that Gorman SF local transfers will decide which it is. Taylor to top the poll. Perhaps a one candidate strategy would have been better for SF here given the big geographic gaps between them?

    So overall that'll give a council of 6FG, 4FF, 4 IND,2 SF, 1 PBP, 1 LAB.
