He'll probably end up a journeyman footballer. And even if he ends up as a megastar, which is unlikely, what exactly do you want the FAI to do? Go over the U21s manager and insist he be included in every squad?

Fcuking typical overreaction on here to everything Ireland & FAI related.

When Connolly was Zefi's age he was breaking into the Brighton team and played 24 PL games. Four seasons later he's getting a one year contract from Hull after Brighton let him leave.

Chances of him being the next Connolly are more likely than him being the next Damien Duff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,388 ✭✭✭topmanamillion

No one has any idea what his career will end up being like. We're in big trouble if we start losing dual nationality players born in Ireland. We have a small enough pool as it is without letting a guy at Roma walk away.

If he goes now can he come back at senior level? I was recently talking to an ex footballer that was born in ROI but opted to join the NI set up as it was a chance to play international football that wasn't going to happen if he didn't switch. Realistically for most of these guys the prospect of senior caps is remote at their level so it is a once in a lifetime chance. If Zefi thinks he will not get underage caps for ROI then chosing Albania makes perfect sense.

Hard to believe at this stage that Connolly was an EPL prospect. 😞 I never liked him as a person but any Irish guy getting EPL minutes at this stage is something to be excited about

Only way he can ever switch back to Ireland if he does leave is if he never plays a game, competitive or non competitive, for Albania at any level.

Finishes the season with an injury time winner. Interesting to see where he ends up next season. Celtic will be foolish not to try sign him and given Johnston's half a season at WBA could tempt Norwich with player plus cash deal. Might give them an advantage over other teams if there's a bit of interest for him.

Delighted for Idah....hopefully this does wonders for his confidence...I've said this before but think the SPL is a great level for him. He struggled in the Premiership and even found the Championship difficult but has done well in Scotland

First half hat trick for Parrott within 30mins in the second leg of the relegation play off against 2nd tier ADO. Game has been temporarily stopped before half time after ADO fans threw fireworks onto the field after the fourth goal was scored.

Jake O'Brien starts in the French cup final which kicks off at 8.

    Third goal was a penalty.

Two lovely finishes. Hope it won't be abandoned it'd be just his luck.

Next Man City manager: You lot may all be internationals and have won all the domestic honours there are to win under Pep. But as far as I'm concerned, the first thing you can do for me is to chuck all your medals and all your caps and all your pots and all your pans into the biggest **** dustbin you can find, because you've never won any of them fairly. You've done it all by bloody cheating.

Was a great loan move for Idah and made the right choice not going to Verona I think it was. With one game left they're 13th in Serie A but there's only 4pts separating 13th and 18th. So that's how close the bottom of the table is in Serie A.

Has finished the season with two trophies, a goal every 90mins and scored some important goals for Celtic which you could argue they don't win the league without them.

First game he gets the assist for Celtic's equaliser against Aberdeen in a 1-1 draw after coming on as a sub. Scored twice against Hibs in a 2-1 win in his second game.

Their 3-1 win against Motherwell he came on at half time with them losing and scored the first two goals. Put them 3-2 up against Rangers with a late goal but finished 3-3 and now the only goal in the cup final.

Jake O'Brien scores for Lyon in the 55th min after going 2-0 down to PSG in the first half.

Playing really well too. Should really be starting for Ireland in the upcoming friendlies

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,007 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Some season for O'Brien. Goes from having a two week trial before they signed him to cementing his place as a starter while scoring in the cup final.

Hopefully he does start but O'Shea is probably gonna play it safe and wouldn't be surprised if it's the same back five that starts again. He's the perfect Duffy replacement when it comes to attacking and defending set pieces. Also has good recovery pace.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,629 ✭✭✭TheCitizen

Adam Idah with the winner for Celtic in the Cup Final. John O’Shea certainly has an in form confident striker to pick for the coming games.

What happened with Damien Duff and the FAI? Did Duff fall out with Stephen Kenny or was it something to do with that video shown to players before a friendly match v England. Was Duff contacted about the job properly or was it another botched job by the FAI?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,109 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

Would appear to have very much been the FAI he had an issue with rather than Kenny… he already had his problems with the FAI, and only joined because of Kenny, and then when they made such a big deal out of the video (and other bits of meddling apparently) he walked.

As for the current opening, he was contacted 'through intermediaries' to gauge interest in it, rather than properly and directly. Definitely should've just gone to him more professionally - though I don't think he'd have been very open to it regardless, but there's a proper way of doing things.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,388 ✭✭✭topmanamillion

There was more going on than the video, it`s all rumours so I won`t add to it but it`s fair to say Duff didn`t just leave over a video. Duff and Stephen Bradley were both spoken to and both described it as lip service through an intermediary. It was a box ticking excercise to make the FAI`s search look exhaustive.

It`s comical from the FAI that they want someone based in Ireland, with experience in youth development and senior international football……and never looked seriously at Duff. The centuriun Ireland international, premier league winner, former Ireland coach, former Celtic coach who is in Tolka every second Friday night turning a yoyo club into league leaders.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,407 ✭✭✭✭LuckyLloyd

Duff as a former international would be interesting and you could give him the job. But the Kenny experiment should have concretely demonstrated how significant the step up is between LOI and International level.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,629 ✭✭✭TheCitizen

Of course it would be a very premature move for Duff himself as he has only just started out on his managerial career, however the FAI has left us with literally no choices after a disastrous process eliminating candidates who might have been interested in it and chasing after candidates who weren’t. Duff is another one that it appears they burned their bridges with. I think it’s going to be O’Shea now anyway unless they find a way to burn bridges with him as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,007 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Wonder what buy clause Norwich were insisting on. If it's was an obligation to buy or the option to buy for £5m. Celtic might find it hard to get him for £5m now.

They could use Johnston to sweeting the deal as an option. One thing going in their favour is Idah is a Celtic fan and might only leave Norwich for Celtic.

Will be good to have two or three strikers in good form going into this window. Just hope there's no pull outs. Will be interesting to see if he goes 3-5-2 with Szmodics and Idah or sticks with the 3-4-3.

Southampton promoted back to the PL. Will be good to have another midfielder back in the PL and he's had a very good season for Southampton.

Unfortunately can see Manning being relegated to a squad player and with Bazunu's long term injury they'll definitely have to bring in a new number one for next season.

Smallbone with the assist for the only goal.

I agree and Kenny was a vastly more experienced and successful manager while Duff hasn't won anything yet.

Duff's playing career might buy him more time, recognition and respect from players, fans and the media. Not that that should be a factor but we're talking about the FAI here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,054 ✭✭✭bren2001

The current guy has no experience.

All of that matters and its nothing to do with the FAI. Kompany didn't get the Bayern job for the amazing results with Burnley this season. He got it because he's Vincent Kompany.

Bazunu, Collins, Egan, Molumby, Ogbene, and Ferguson. Not sure who else is ruled out.

Utterly pointless games anyway just being used as cannon fodder for teams going to the Euros, while the players who do turn up will have one and a half eyes on the beach.

Bit of a pain for fans of the WNT too - the Hungary game overlaps with their away Euros qualifier game against Sweden.

Womens match kicks off at 5.30pm and men's match 7.45pm.

It says 6.30 on the FAI website. Maybe the local time? Makes things a bit simpler, although I'm not sure how reliable RTE player will be on the train into the Aviva (and with daughter's two favourite players in the world likely taking the keeper spot for men's and women's, I'll be under strict instructions to make it work!)

Coverage starts at 5 on rte so yeah the FAI is going off local time.

Fingers crossed. Last time I tried to use it at home it was very laggy. Spending an evening with cranky 12 year old who didn't get to worship at the altar of Courtney Brosnan could be a tricky one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,007 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Tom Cannon called up to the senior side. David Harrington gets his first call up and Enda Stevens returns to the squad along with Shane Duffy.

Josh Keely and Bosun Lawal supposedly will train with the seniors before joining up with the U21s.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,526 ✭✭✭tigger123

Great to see Tom Cannon in the mix.

Harrington is the first player I'd to Google in a senior squad in a very long time, probably since one of those end of season tours in America under Stan or Trap.

Disappointing squad overall though, not arguing there were loads who should've been in there but having Stevens and Brady as your left full options is incredibly disappointing.

    is Ebosele injured?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,007 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Possibly, something was mentioned about fitness. Didn't catch actually what was said but Kasey McAteer is missing too for the same reason.

Alan Browne asked not to be selected as these are only friendlies. He's out of contract atm. Said Browne would have joined up if they were competitive games.

Said Manning hasn't played enough games lately to get called up. Which is a weak as piss excuse when you consider O'Dowda was called up. Also given that Southampton were in the playoffs he's likely match sharp and would have been training daily while others were on holidays.

Travers and Cullen won't be joining up with the squad straight away as they've both got weddings. Which is why Keely and Lawal will train with the seniors till they arrive.

Not sure if Cullen and Travers will miss the first game. He was asked if both players would be in Portugal. But didn't hear what actually was asked or any reference towards the first game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,007 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Even if you called up every player that featured in the last U21s to this senior squad there would still be U21s games. Would be ridiculous not to have any when most of the current squad will be ineligible after these qualifiers.

And doubt the U21s games are being shown preference either and it's just JOS being conservative.

If he gives a good account of himself he is almost guaranteed the job at this stage.

Stan part 2 here we go 🤬

Can see us playing for two draws and hoping neither Hungary or Portugal have much interest like the Belgians.

Doubt it. A poor performance against Hungary will mean the FAI will look for someone else in the summer. A win against Hungary and a 'performance' v Portugal and Staunton will get the job permanently

    Mistake intentional

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,491 ✭✭✭pgj2015

I suppose it doesn't tie Cannon to us as they are just friendlies, it could be a Declan Rice mark 2 situation.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,109 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

Doesn't tie him to us, but joining up with the senior team is definitely a great step in the right direction, especially after England already approaching him about switching to them. It's going back on that step up to the seniors that's drawn so much ire on Rice (much more than Graelish), which I'm sure Cannon himself will be aware of.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,491 ✭✭✭pgj2015

Hopefully he stays with us, he seems like a natural goal scorer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,109 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

He does alright… interested to see what happens with him this season - whether he'll be seen as depth for Leicester in the PL, or go on loan to play regularly in the championship. As nice as it is on paper to have more PL players, I kinda hope its the latter.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,545 ✭✭✭kowloonkev

I wonder how much barely making Leicester squads and rarely featuring has influenced his decision to turn up for an Ireland friendly.

Next Man City manager: You lot may all be internationals and have won all the domestic honours there are to win under Pep. Will likely depend on who they bring in as manager and what money they'll have to spend. They've only four senior strikers and Vardy is still the main man there. Daka and Iheanacho were meh this season and Iheanacho is out of contract.

Think a loan move even for six months would be beneficial. His start at Leicester hasn't been much to write home about but when he joined he already had the stress fracture back injury. So wouldn't be surprised if he's kept around until at least January to act as back up for Vardy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,675 ✭✭✭TokTik

Hard to tell when he’s only played over 45 mins 4 times in the Championship last season, unable to usurp 37yo Vardy

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,007 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

With the change of rules towards eligibility there's a possible chance that while a cap won't tie him to Ireland indefinitely it might mean he'll have to wait until June 2027 if wants to switch.

Would be great if a journalist could find this out for definite. If he togging out for us stops him switching for three years then would wonder has this season (even with the injury) changed his mind a little. Otherwise might just be him trying to make England interested again by flirting with us.

Honestly I wouldn't have him in the senior squad. He's done nothing this season to prove he should be ahead of Armstrong or Emakhu for a call up this summer. Could even argue that Nathan Fraser would be more deserving of a call up and even he also fits into the will he won't he play for us category that has likely seen Cannon get this call up.
